painting figures

Post by Tay99 »

Hi hoping some one can give some advice. I've never painted any figures before and I have a Steve McQueen figure for the car build.
Its cast in white metal how should I go about painting it and what type of paint should I use. picture of the figure below.
Thanks in advance.

Hi , You should use a good primer , and then you can use acrylics , for my figures in white metal and Resin Busts I usually use Andrea Miniatures color paints , they are acrylics water based and very nice to use with brush , but I know that are people that use Vallejo Model Color , or Citadel paints , and even I used Tamiya paints in my first figures ...important to prime the figure before painting , I use Tamiya Grey Primer in Rattle Can , an advice , do not keep the spary can still while spraying as like that you can build up excess paint in the detail of the figure !
Cheers ,

I agree with rodrant ......and try some oils , I think they work really well with the shading etc on figures as they blend well.....
Good luck and enjoy, I'm looking forward to seeing this .......

Watch lots of u tube videos on figure painting before you start, especially face and eyes
Lots of little things to do for shading and details
I agree with good primer, likely a light one as his suit is whiteish and the Citadel paints flow smoother for brushing than Tamiya that dry too fast
Oils take forever to dry and will drive you bonkers other than used as a wash for highlights

Where did you get the figure???

Thanks for all the help, I've had a look at a couple of YouTube videos, and have ordered the Vallejo skin set, I have a couple of other figures to practise on before I start Mr McQueen.
I brought the figure from hiroboy, put I've seen another one of him from scale production which I might order its the one of him giving the two finger salute as depicted in the Le Mans film.

Nice, he was just a cool guy 8-)
The Vallejo paint is good, just a bit more $ in North America. Not that Tamiya is bad, just volatile and evaporates so quick, very difficult to hand paint better for spray. You will notice the difference with the Vallejo from the first brush stroke.
Look at some gamer figure videos, those guys and girls do some amazing stuff with paint on figures
Post lots of pics of your progress :cheers2:
