Varnish or Lacquer

Post by NIgelGF »

Please can I have some advise on what best to finish my 1/35 Tank models off with Clear Varnish or Lacquer, also which make's
I am fairly new to building these model and I understand that the washes work a lot better when the above is applied.
Thanks

The general technique is to apply a gloss varnish over the paint and then the decals before weathering with a matt varnish to finish, for gloss it seems that alclad aquagloss is the dogs danglies, for my matt i use vallejo premium.
John, whats on my bench? Usually a mess and a couple of different models a week.

I just watched some reviews regarding the Alclad II Aqua Gloss. It is an acrylic finish so yes, it can be used on acrylic paints. I believe the Vallejo product he mentioned is also an acrylic so it should be safe as well. I have not used the Aqua Gloss YET. After watching some videos about it though I am going to get some!

Welcome back to modeling! I'm like you, took 30 years off and getting back into it. It's completely different now, and much for the better! Have fun!

Might be worth noting that washes such as Ultimate work better over a gloss finish. So the sequence would be paint, gloss varnish, decals, gloss varnish, weathering, matt varnish. Aqua Gloss is excellent.

Hey Mav,

Gloss coat then decal then second gloss coat then weathering then matt coat (if you need it). Second gloss coat is vital as you need to seal down the decals before you apply washes and dirt etc.

Its all good stuff
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Just avoid oils for now, that can get confusing with washes, filters and streaking. Washes need gloss coats to work properly, whereas the filters and streaking need a matt coat, easy to end up with half a dozen different coats of varnish on one model!

I know what you mean. Before I bought an airbrush last year I had only ever brush painted with enamels then maybe a satin varnish right at the end. I joined this site after watching Paul's 'how to' vids on YouTube where he used an Airfix 1/48 Me109 and did a step by step from primer to final coat and that was all it took. Since then its been brilliant. Learning from others and posting my own stuff for people to laugh at!!
