The Kamov Ka-27 (NATO reporting name 'Helix') is a military helicopter developed for the Soviet Navy, and currently in service in various countries including Russia, Ukraine, Vietnam, People's Republic of China, Republic of Korea (South Korea), and India. Variants include the Ka-29 assault transport, the Ka-28 downgraded export version, and the Ka-32 for civilian use

Design and development

The helicopter was developed for ferrying and anti-submarine warfare. Design work began in 1969 and the first prototype flew in 1973. It was intended to replace the decade-old Kamov Ka-25, and is similar in appearance to its predecessor due to the requirements of fitting in the same hangar space. Like other Kamov military helicopters it has coaxial rotors, removing the need for a tail rotor.

Operational history

A Russian Navy Ka-27 helicopter from the Russian Udaloy-class destroyer RS Severomorsk (DDG 619) conducted interoperability deck landing training on board USS Mount Whitney on 22 July 2010.

Ka-32A11BC multipurpose helicopters have been successfully operated in Portugal for over five years. In 2006, KAMOV JSC won the tender for the supply of Ka-32A11BC firefighting helicopters, to replace Aérospatiale SA-330 Pumas, which have very high operating costs.

The Ka-32A11BC features a high power-to-weight ratio and ease of handling, owing to its coaxial rotor design. The rotors' diameters are not restricted by the presence of a tail rotor and associated tail boom; this facilitates maneuvering near obstacles and helps assure exceptional accuracy when hovering in heavy smoke and dust conditions. The Ka-32A11BC may be equipped with the Bambi Bucket suspended fire-fighting system of up to five tons capacity. The service life has been extended to up to 32 000 flight hours.



Since the 1990s, China has purchased the Ka-28 export version and Ka-31 radar warning version for the PLAN fleet. Ka-31 purchases were first revealed in 2010. It is believed that Chinese Ka-28s have been equipped with more enhanced avionics compared to Ka-28s exported to other countries.

In 2013, Russia tested the new Kamov Ka-27M with an active electronically scanned array radar. The basis of the modernization of the Ka-27M is installed on the helicopter airborne radar with an active phased array antenna FH-A. This radar is part of the command and tactical radar system that combines several other systems: acoustic, magnetometric, signals intelligence and radar. All the information on them is displayed on the display instrumentation.

Ka-32s are used for construction of transmission towers for overhead power lines, as it has somewhat higher lift capacity than the Vertol 107.

Time to make a start
First up some of the interior flight controls, instruments and racking

























A dry fit of the internal components





The color call outs for the interior are very vague the floor pan and the instrument panel are in light blue and the big panel in silver, there is no mention of any colors for the rest of the equipment.
I have tried to get some reference photo's from the internet of the interior but have had no luck so far.
Any help with this would be appreciated

Here is the rest of the internals the seats and the instrument panel







Now all primed and ready for painting



The floor and center console i used Tamiya X-14 sky blue the rest i used Tamiya XF-20 medium grey with some detail picked out with Mr hobby H-12 flat black



Now here i came across a fault with the decal for the instrument panel ( so be aware if you buy this kit) The decal is cut to the wrong shape of the part and if you turn the decal over there is no instrument detail so i painted some detail with flat black




Now it was time to fit the cockpit out which went together really well although it looks a bit cramped in there













Next up I assembled the 2 rotors these were a bit fiddly to do





















These will be primed and painted at a later date as I will be fitting these at the end

Now for the motor which as 2 cogs on the inside so the blades rotate





This was painted with the Tamiya XF-20 as was the fuselage interior

Also to this there is an overhead panel wich was painted in the Tamiya sky blue and the decal for this was good and it laid down well with some micro sol







The 2 clear parts were added to the 2 halves then fitted together

















These went together really well with just a spot of filler needed













Now the engine cover and exhausts











Now for some external parts grab handles and antennas also some PE vents













The white that you see on the PE parts was from the PE placer it just needs wiping off.

While i was on a roll i assembled the horizontal stabilizers











and i'm not sure what these are but the fit on each side

Time to attach these and the stabilizers















Also added the front glass and masked it







Next up the landing gear and wheels here i'll attach the wheels at the end

























While these were drying I assembled the blades and painted the rotors with Vallejo metal color steel













The rear door i'm going to paint it up and attach it at the end in the open position



Time to get some primer on this using Badger black primer ( sorry Paul and Lee i will order the primer from you when i run out
Now with the doors on this the clear parts protruded out and i found this difficult to mask with tape so i used Humbrol maskol

















For the wheels i decided to leave the tyres in the black primer and painted the centres with Tamiya XF-26 deep green



Now to get some paint on this i decided to go with Tamiya XF-20 medium grey









Then some detail painting with Model color red, Mr hobby H-76 Burnt iron and Mr hobby H-12 flat black

Just a quick update Iv'e got the rotor blades painted up with Tamiya XF-24 dark grey, Model air pale blue grey FS36375 and model color red










That's all for now except i will clear coat everything and start the decals
