Airfix 1/72 Supermarine Spitfire F Mk 22

This is my entry into the GB.
It will be built in the metal finish shown on the box art. The kit will be brush painted using Tamiya Enamels (primarily XF-16, Flat Aluminium) and the canopy will be painted using tamiya acrylics.

Instructions on the Wall - I am building this alongside a Tamiya Walker Bulldog which is why there are two sets of instructions on the wall.

Work has begun.

First off a test fit







Cockpit done up










Cockpit in place and fuselage being glued together.... but I then realized I forgot to put in the propeller! So I had to openup the fuselage and put the propeller in.

The model was then painted using tamiya XF-16 with a flat head brush. This is the first coat on.







Some filler applied





I am conflicted about giving the panel lines a wash as they are clearly visible on the kit with the metal paint on. So will have a tough decision to make once the kit is done up and ready for weathering.

More work done, the kit is almost complete now. So I decided to give the model a wash. I used Vallejo Light Grey Model Wash, which went directly on, without a gloss coat as it is an acrylic wash and the model is painted with enamels.

Some of the paint did come off, but this was then re-painted. I still have to finish up doing the canopy and gloss coat the model.

The canopy is slightly damaged as can be seen in the above pic, but I will just have to live with that. I will wait a few days for the decals to set right in, and paint to fully dry before gloss coating, and gluing on the canopy.

Thanks Smiffy and Stokesy, unfortunately whilst applying the gloss varnish the underlying paint was damaged, and so I tried to fix it by applying more gloss varnish and ended up damaging the entire model. I then tried to wash off the varnish with hot water .... really bad idea.

I was using Helmar Gloss Varnish

The model has ended up very damaged with bubbles on it





I was too close when applying the varnish, which has never given me a problem before.. but then again, this is only my 30th ever model kit so I might need a bit more experience with the varnish.

In any case this kit is finished. Ill just take this one on the chin, move on, and will either have to start another kit or bow out of the GB.

Too bad! The model looked really nice to me, on the last pictures!

Damn that's really unfortunate, although you could change gears and go the VERY weathered (almost abandoned) route based on the last 2 pictures.

Thats not a bad suggestion, or take it back to plastic & order some aftermarket decals.

Yeah, the instructions didn't specify how shiny...you could make a little stand with some weeds and make it look like a derelict in need of some love.

So here goes....

I've started work on the damaged abandoned version of this kit

Here is a base covered in dirt, glued with PVA glue


Glue mixed in water and sprayed on




Woodland scenics turf used



Rocks placed and spitfire placed in between, covered with turf in appropriate places, showing grass growth.





Will now wait for this to dry and then add another color of grass. Then maybe a tree or maybe not. I dont know about puting on the canopy, or leaving it as is, will decide that in the coming days

I have competed the build,

I used trees using Joefix Studios branches to make trees for all scales. I used hairspray on the branches and sprinkled woodland scenics turf on them.



I used some stones to set the plane on, to make it seem as it was stuck there and also to show that the grass grew from the stones onto the aircraft.

Amazing job mate!!! I automatically respect anyone that can brush paint a model and make it look good. It's really unfortunate what happened with that varnish, but I think it turned into a happy accident!!!
