Camouflage

OK, so, I've never attempted camo before but am going to try on my Sturmgeschutz. I have no clue. What's the easiest way? I currently have normal Tamiya masking tape, some white tac and also some liquid masking fluid. What's best, or easiest for a beginner?

Any advice or shortcuts to YouTube etc (I have looked myself but not found much that's actually relevant to teaching how to do it)

Hi Augustus.

I am no expert. I am learning new things all the time. In regards to camo next time I do it I am going to use Tamiya curved masking tape. Its great for making curved edges.

Paul reviewed it on ISM youtube. Have a look. In the video you can see him demonstrating how it can be used to paint curved edges for camo schemes. I have used glutec before but had bad results with paint clogging with the edge of the glutec. I think in terms of shortcuts this is the best way to go.

masking fluid I have used is a bitch....Humbols. Very tedious to remove afterwards
I don't know enough to really set you straight. I would ask though what type of camo are to going to do

I do know with masking tape make use you push all the edges down with something firm. Other wise the paint can flow underneath and only do very light coats to start with and try not to blow the paint under the edges.

Masking tape will give you a hard edge whilst white-tac will give you a softer blended look. Tip: Remove the white-tac just as soon as your finished painting or it will leave nasty grease marks!!!

Thanks guys, so far it looks like tac is the way to go. The masking fluid I got is by Vallejo, never mind if I don't use it for masking, I've seen it used for chipping effects so I might give that a go.

What kind of camouflage do you have in mind? There are many ways of doing it. I´d try to free hand the camouflage, because sharp edges you would get with any kind of masking is not what a German tank usually needs.

I wouldn't doubt yourself or your airbrush Augustus. I remember my first tri-color camo freehand on a T-72. I decided to make it a Syrian war tank and it came out really well. Find a good reference picture and try to paint freehand. Its easier than you think. Just plan ahead before you spray and take your time.

I've just got a Neo mate and its a good un but just needs a steady finger on the button....suck it in, puff the chest out and try the freehand

I found practicing on sheets of paper and then folded sheets of paper to give you right angles etc works wonders
