Fujimi 1/20 - Williams FW16 San Marino GP 1994 Deluxe Edition.

Lets start with a fun fact:

If Tim did not show Scalemates in the live show 3 weeks ago? I would not have been aware that this model existed.

This model is a bit of a holy grail for me. Been a huge Senna fan since his first win with Lotus in Portugal. The bad side is that the model brought back all the bad memories from 1994 vividly. (So why buy the actual model of the car?) Like many F1 fans either on place or in front of the TV, his death came as a chock. I was already stunned by the tragic death of Roland Ratzenberger the day before.

I wont bore you with photos of the accident. We have all seen them too many times. Its not the wrecked Williams we want to remember!

This is how i like to remember him in his Williams. Driving it flat out and doing that magic with the cars only he could.

The tires look pretty good. A small seam line can be found on all 4 tires. They dont feel too hard and plastic, but not as soft and sticky as other do, which are a dust magnets.

The photo-etch is the only thing that is different from the Deluxe and standard version. The standard version don't have it in the box. They are made by Fujimi but they do not upgrade the actual manual of where all the photo-etched parts go. Instead you get this separate piece of paper with photos on where some of the parts go!

Here is the other side of the photo-etch manual...All the other parts that are not depicted on these two sides of the manual are a guessing game? This is so far the only thing i have any complaints on.

The decal sheet dont come with the Rothmans name and logos. I bought those separately on Ebay, that decal sheet is at the bottom right in the photo. I do get a masking sheet oob.

What i did notice was that the original decals have a bit of violet tint in the blue parts, while the blue on the seperate decals i bought looks just like the blue seen on the car.

The instructions, all in Japanese. But the pictures are good enough to decrypt/understand what your supposed to do. I forgot to take a photo of the color map. Its a bit strange because they refer to the different colors as H1 = Black , H2 = Silver etc etc...No color codes are referred to any known brands of paint.

Its not a complicated build, the little i have built so far been nice. The parts fit, some annoying ejector marks need to be sanded down and seam lines. From my pov, the biggest challenge will be to find out were all the none depicted photo etched parts should go, and then what to do with the strange violet tint on the blue decals.

Testing to remove the chrome/silver by soaking it in bleech. Its been in here overnight and i have actually not checked on it yet.

Awesome stuff here Patrik
The kit looks fantastic and the PE will add tons of detail. Fujimi detail approaches Tamiya's
Really looking forward to seeing this develop.

As for your sentiments about Senna I can totally relate.
My hero Gilles Villeneuve died when I was 14. I can remember my a-hole older brother telling me and thinking it was funny I was hurt. I was a F1 nut up to that point and followed every race. After his death, I stopped completely, took all the pics off my bedroom walls and fell out of F1..well maybe the odd glance, but nothing in comparison.
Fast forward to today, I have 16 f1 kits in the stash and six will be Villenuve Ferraris...even though they screwed him around and helped kill him. Thinking about getting the FW19 Revell kit for Jacques Villenuve's car

Sorry to hear that your big brother was such a *ick back then. Gills had a real nasty one and its not good for children to see such things. I hope you will build one of the Ferrari 312´s and make a thread. A build thread is always more interesting when a kit has a historic or a personal significance.

Just a thought. Are the h numbers referring to me hobby paints? I know h39 is purple and h 5 appears to be just blue on the pot, not sure of that helps at all.

I have no idea what kind of paints they are referring too. Only been back in this hobby for 3-4 months since my teens, still trying to learn as much as possible and build at the same time.

Maybe the black square with a number refer to Mr Paint or something similar?

Not sure about the black square numbers but the h numbers do seem to match up with Mr hobby colours, I've just done a quick Google search of a few, Mr hobby aqueous paints are coded with a H followed by a number and is these that I think the call out is for.

I dove a bit deeper into your tip and i think that the colors refer to a brand called Gunze Sangyo, but i could be way wrong. Never heard of them before. Dont even know if they are for airbrushing.

I am such a doof worried about buying a kit. Yes Gunze paint all Japanese instructions, Fujimi doesn't make it easy

Now it all makes sense, and now i know that the numbers refer to the correct shades of the specific color. The convert chart is great, because i can order Tamiya colors here in Sweden instead of an online hobbystore abroad. This will save me a few $.

Its been a slow progress this weekend with the build. I have mostly searched for good quality ref photos of the car,motor, and trying to de-crypt the paint map. The paint problem have been solved now however. A huge Thank You to all 3 of you who helped me out!

So this is what i have done with the model:

Some Pe stuff have been glued in place on the engine, on both sides.

And the bleach test worked great. After a 48 hour soak, the part on the left became white.

The rest of the silvery parts are now soaking in bleach.

Very nice so far ive just started the revell mclaren mp 25 its got a lot of flash and the fits not great and not so much detail as yours am hoping to put some pics up soon

I mostly built kits from Revell before, so i dealt with the flash problem. Some of their kits fit nicely together others are a real nightmare (Stay away from the Tupolev Tu-144 in scale 1/144). However i hope that your build will be good and that the MP25 will look amazing. Looking forward to see your pics.

Thanks pat for the nice comments on the bike . It well be my first time i have built a f1 car what am finding differcult is trying to find pictures of the the car eg engine and simerly detail as they are so secretive and keep things coverd up.looking forward of seeing more pics of your build

This is coming together nicely. I've never been confident about F1 kits, so I'm interested to see how this turns out. I did build a Mclaren MP4/2 kit by Heller when I was a teenager, and it went together okay as far as I remember. I wasn't looking out for things like flash etc at the time though.

Try google for "McLaren MP25 technical". I did a search like that on the FW16 and found more/better pics then just a making a search on Williams FW16 cockpit or engine. There are also changes on the car from race to race, just a note to think about.

Haha, well i have not done so much on the car yet and it is my first F1 car since my teens. (Built those F1´s from Heller also). I usually build modern jets and subs, im a bit out of my element on this build, but i really want to build this car. If there is a will then there is a way, as they say.

Ok here comes an update... ...

Lets start with my attempt to mix my own color. This one turned out to be way wrong.

Second attempt looks much better, but i really should of used the airbrush instead of the paintbrush. I will have to redo this so the paint is even. Lots of details that needs to be painted later.

Just the standard tip. Always test fit the parts before gluing them in place. If not, then you might find some serious trouble that could of been easily avoided with simply sanding the parts into shape.

i finally got round to building the williams FW24 and RB6 last year. Like you i struggled to figure out the fujimi paint code of the sauber of perez so h.t went back in the pile.

I'll be keeping up with every update you post, enjoying it so far

"F1 cars don't look so advanced to build at first glance", i was so wrong on that. But the painting will be the biggest challenge. The more details one paint the better and more realistic it will look in the end. So im just trying to keep my head above the water atm.

Did you start any build threads on any of those cars? Would love to check them out if there are.

Need to make my mind up on this pretty soon before one gets too far into the building and painting. Im kind of thinking of buying the carbon-fiber decals for the model. What do you guys think, are they realistic enough to make a difference on the model?

Up to i built the tamiya RB6 i didnt bother but after doing that with the kit supplied decals i'm pretty well sold on them. I have bought them for every F1 kit i have now.
With the FW24 i used paint to replicate the carbon pattern but the decals are the way to go

I dont patrik i'm afraid. I was a lone modeler for 40yrs untill during the summer i found this great forum. I never even gave it a thought to document the builds at the time, i wish i had !

As soon as this months paycheck arrives, im placing an order on this set.

If the kit would of been of smaller scale i would not even have considered going with carbon.

That is some stunning work and beautiful builds. Both cars look a *ell of a lot better then any Die cast models.

Liked that you got to paint the brand on the tires, just adds a lot to the realistic look in the end.
I have to buy me a Tamiya kit in the future. Feels like they are thinking more of the whole picture then just making parts that should be glued together and painted.

How hard is it to apply those carbon decals for an grown up amateur?

Your photos also got me thinking that i maybe should not spend too much time on detailing the engine and gearbox. Because the car will be displayed with the covers on.

Well it starts to resemble an engine and a gearbox. Painted the engine-block, gearbox and a few parts with Alclads Airframe Aluminium. Nothing is glued in place or finished yet. Just wanted to test the parts and get a feel for whats need to be done.

Yeah, i hear what your saying about the detail with the covers on but your build is a very special car with huge historical significance partly for the reasons that sadden us the most with F1. If it was me i would go as far as possible with the detailing and carbon decals, this car is worth the effort and money.

Dave, that Red Bull was by far the trickiest thing i've ever painted ! I do use tamiya TS cans but de-canted for the airbrush but that blue was a nightmare. If i was to do another i think i Would try it straight out the can !

Sure, because its the MIG wash that caught my eyes...You just wanted me to drool over the Lotus!

I bought Ultimate´s dark wash but have not used/tested it yet. Previously i just mixed my own out of a set of watercolors for kids. Used that on my earlier builds like the Maiale and the Gripen 39D. (Both can be found under the "Finished builds" topic).

The tube of the True Metal color, is that the one you can buff to get a nice shine?
