DrSprue's 1/48 Naboo N-1 Starfighter

Post by DrSprue »

Ok well here it goes for my 1st SIG (or any web based contest). hmm come to think of it, being that I havnt built anything for the last 20 years or so, my only web based anything, lol!! Other than the last month of starting a few kits, coming on-board with ISM and watching Pauls vids, was all I did with model building. So to start, Ill just enter a simple level 1 kit to get my feet wet. I was going to start with the Glencoe UFO based on a very old kit (even simpler), but decided to follow the star wars theme here and If im lucky, finish this and may still do the UFO as well if time permits.

Ok this is about this SIG entry, and like you guys, I am a major scifi fan as well. Trek #1 and SW #2 and the rest all really great!! To me it has to fly! This will be a Star Wars kit for my 1st Entry!! Woooot --- The Naboo!!

[][][][][][][][][][] ---------------------------The N-1 Starfighter---------------------------[][][][][][][][][][]

The Naboo as most of us know, protects the skies and space around Naboo and is the N-1 starfighter. Its sleek design exemplifies the philosophy of art and function witnessed throughout Naboo technology. Its twin radial J-type engines are capped in gleaming chrome and trail long delicate-looking finials behind the ship's single-pilot compartment. Behind the pilot sits a standard astromech droid, plugged into an abbreviated, ventrally-fed socket which requires the droid to compress slightly in order to fit within the vessel's curves. The fighter features twin blaster cannons, twin fire-linked torpedo launchers, and a capable automatic pilot feature.

Its history:
Star Wars - Episode 1: The Phantom Menace was the first "Star Wars" "prequel," and as such producer George Lucas wanted to provide his key vehicles with a decidedly "retro" look. No vehicle achieved this goal more than the Naboo Fighter, which looked like something a Ford Motor Company design geek might have dreamed up back in 1958. Sleek, smooth and aerodynamic, the fighter's stingray-like profile and Turtle Wax finish were a far cry from the clunky "used future" look of the ships featured in the original trilogy.

Here is the 1st part of my entry:

Image

Ill be back after I open the box, take pictures of the kit sprues and such (as noted by Paul, Lee, Lysus and you at ISM)

This is fun!! Good luck to you all!!! :thumb2:

Stranded on the desert planet Tatooine after rescuing young Queen Amidala from the impending invasion of Naboo, Jedi apprentice Obi-Wan Kenobi and his Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn discover nine-year-old Anakin Skywalker, a young slave unusually strong in the Force. Anakin wins a thrilling Podrace and with it his freedom as he leaves his home to be trained as a Jedi. The heroes return to Naboo where Anakin and the Queen face massive invasion forces while the two Jedi contend with a deadly foe named Darth Maul. Only then do they realize the invasion is merely the first step in a sinister scheme by the re-emergent forces of darkness known as the Sith.

I do love that design. It's a nice contrast with the worn and beaten vehicles.

Thank God its clear for the canopy!!! This kit I think is too old to contact AMT now for a replacement, lol

Image

I forgot to take a picture of the base (seen above), but I am going to make a custom base for this as well to add to the effect, and I may not put in the clear stand, depending on what I make.

Well that's it so far. I dont know if 4 months will give me enough time for the decals (hehe.. sorry just kidding) but I hope to do things with this kit that I know I never did before.. like.. finish it, lol, and with the videos I have seen on this website, I know I probably may do better than just build, paint and display like I used to...
I do have an electronics background so, I may put in a LED here somewhere...
dont know, but.... we have begun!! See you very soon. :pop:

There we go, got out the bleach this morning and got rid of those toy like chrome plating on these parts of the sprue. I have somewhere testers melatizer paints but there so old and out of date, I just cant trust them now. Any recommendations here would be appreciated. Haven't chromed up anything in a long time!

I've had decent results using a gloss black base (lately I've been using Mr Color GX2 Ueno Black, but really any gloss black would work alright if it goes on nicely, make sure it's nice and smooth) and then misting on Alclad Chrome until the black is almost gone and it's super shiny. A quick, light buff with a cloth sometimes takes it from a bit grainy to shine in a couple seconds. Try practicing on a plastic spoon first to get a feel for it, sucks to try it on your kit and realize you don't like it ;)

My spoons I tested on (sorry they're a bit dinged, been in a drawer), Alclad Chrome and Chrome for Lexan:

Hm, pics aren't 100% what they look like in person (they're in focus for a start ;) ) they look more silver but still quite shiny and reflective. As I said, practice a bit and see what you get.

OHH Thank you so very much Lysus, ...awesome, yea I can use an airbrush OK for very basic painting that I did many years ago, but never got a real good metal looking part, but didnt try really. Did use the testers stuff once. I will put your tip at the top of my list!! (cool Idea on plastic spoons!! )Wow, thanks so much. :th:

The ship sprue pieces looks good so far, not to much flash and some nice details on the wings, while I'm working on some Ideas, please enjoy some images about the N-1 Star fighter.

Oh thanks Primus, yea your Cylon ship kicks butt too! I am working on the layout of the LED's im going to put in the ship 1st, then show a few shots of that before its glued. We need to be careful with construction, cause as you know once glued and a led pin disconnects, project is a bit more difficult to repair, if at all as one R2D2 went screwy :eeek: , back in the day that I did, lol. So looking forward to your killing machine! thx again. :cheers2:

Still working on the LED layout concepts of the ship. Im going to use a few different LED colors as well, but mounting them will be some work. For now, here are some new internet pictures showing a bit more about the star-fighter, one in particular, a better internal diagram of the N-1 (concept, not real of course) that is much more readable as well. I think I may put a red led at the proton torpedo section underneath the front, even tho it is a torpedo, but hey. Maybe in the future, the proton energy needs to be heated at first before firing? yeaa that works...

Image

This diagram is much more detailed and readable. (just click it two or three times!!)

Hi Neil, yea back about 20 years ago I spent a year making about a half dozen models at best, barely finished any tho. I did complete many flying rockets though also at that time. Just enuff paint to make it look good, fly well and some plastic stuff but with what you guys do on your aircraft I am really just a beginner. I watched one of Pauls videos about a wash and creating good cockpits and said ohhh kayyy.... I need to do something better to make my models look somewhat realistic. Well here I am on this SIG and I see the great work you guys do. I know how to use glue and putty, so I am going to finish this little fighter..haha. It may not come out great, but this is fun and a good way to keep at it.

A correction to the list I made above with the Naboo images and the text I wrote. I said...

"I think I may put a red led at the proton torpedo section underneath the front of the ship"

No, I was watching the DVD video of Phantom menace last night. (Ironically just got a copy of the DVD this weekend) and at close to the end of the film, Anakin Skywalker fired the torpedo at the reactor units of the droid control ship shown below.

Image

It is not red but a couple very fiery blue photon torpedos came flying out of Anakin's fighter after he landed on it.
Image

OK, enuff said, I got a few of these 3mm blue LEDs on my bench now. Thank God I did electronic stuff back a few years ago.

Image

Hmm LEDs are fun and easy and so is this SIG photo stuff too but I will have to paint this soon when they are all installed. I will also have to paint the little Anakin figure too. Arrg, I have an airbrush (but have to go outside to use it, I have no booth) and have done some hand brushing from back in the day, but this scares the heck out of me. First time removing chrome plating too. It came out fine by what you guys recommended using bleach but it seems to have a glossy brownish coat around the edges. Can I spray primer on top of that or should I sand all the removed chrome areas as well? Still tho, this is fun and thank you all for your kind remarks. This is very enjoyable!

To me, thats the easy part! Making these models look real like what you guys do on this SIG and this forum with these gorgeous plastic molds scares me a bit, but having so much fun doing it and watching all of you (and learning too).

Now that I got a good feel of using pics, gifs and even youtubes this week (thanks to you here at ISM), here is a nice little video I came across that promotes some of my efforts. Just a cool trailer (newer) for Phantom menace. (Dont worry it will get bigger after the beginning info, lol)

They always know how to get you excited with their trailers :)

Dunno if you watch the animated stuff, but it's actually pretty amazing...

And they do Darth Maul justice with a long story arc across The Clone Wars series and ending in Rebels (don't click to watch if you don't want a spoiler!)

Oh that really looked great Lysus. Watched the 1st one and really enjoyed it. Never saw the animated SW stuff ever. Was so buzy with work for so long I missed all this great stuff. Now tho my life changed and I can get some time to do it. I did not watch the second because of your very good reason.. lol! How many animated ones were there? Can you bye them all? Thanks for sharing. What was funny tho is that the 1st one at 2:46 into it quickly looked like Spock. I had to pause it and watch it on a larger screen to relax the possibilities in my mind that Gene and George got together..haha!!

The Clone Wars is out on DVD and BluRay, and I think also on Netflix.

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Clone- ... season+1-5

Note there's an unreleased 6th season (or half of it anyway) that's not included in the set:

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Clone- ... T93PTNH4MY

Rebels is still running on TV (the 4th and last season is about to start) but you can get the first two seasons already.

https://www.amazon.com/Star-Wars-Rebels ... ars+rebels

Of course that's Amazon US, but I'm sure they're available in the UK as well.

Clone Wars starts out pretty kid friendly, but around the second season it starts to get darker and more adult. Most agree the second season is where it really starts to shine. It gives you loads of story about the clone troopers, how the Republic became quickly corrupted, and most importantly makes Anakin's fall from the light make sense. He's paired with his own apprentice, Ahsoka, and you can watch him come to distrust the Order through her eyes. She's a bit annoying at first, but by the end she was a favorite character of mine. And, as I said, the clones get a lot of screen time and you come to know a lot about them, even care for many of them. Obi-wan receives a lot of attention and he's made into even more of a tragic, Arthurian knight figure. His sacrifice by the time of A New Hope becomes all the more compelling.

Rebels is still aimed at a younger audience, but it gets dark quickly. The art style is taken directly from the Ralph McQuarrie designs in the late 70s and it's glorious. It happens just before A New Hope and Rogue One and includes many characters from the original trilogy eventually. Fun fact, when you hear Mon Mothma and Saw Garerra that's really the same actors from the films ;) In fact, during Rogue one you not only see their ship and some of the characters in the background but you can hear a few names called out over the intercoms on Yavin.

Even James Earl Jones returns to voice Vader...and he's amazing.

They're great fun and while not necessary to enjoy the films they add a lot to them, especially to Anakin Skywalker and his fall from grace.

regarding your question about the residue film left behind after the chrome removal, I get this a lot when i do my Tamiya bike models but it seems to take the primer well, I use ultimate primer all the time now as nothing comes close, the film seems like some sort of base coat to help the fake chrome (aluminium coating) adhere when its applied in some sort of vacuum process.

Oh great Terry thanks. 1st time I did a chrome removal and was very worried about that dark glossy like substance. Oh yes, I have to put an order in for Ultimate's awesome primer. Ive listen to you guys on here and Pauls live show and it seems great. Thanks for the info kind sir! All of you that help me with these kits and painting is so appreciated. Im old electronics guy, so a few leds is no problem, but it took me a while to figure out what you guys meant about washes... I thought at 1st... but the sprue pieces are not that dirty! lol!!

Yeah I'm still learning with leds but have some electrical background so wiring those is the easy bit, fettling the kit to run wires and fit the leds a bit harder but a wee bit of planning and white tacking and taping stuff in place temporarily before commiting to glueing is all thats required there, I too can build a model easy enough, am still learning with the airbrush, I know a few weathering techniques now so that bits not so hard but Paul is very good with an airbrush and havent mastered some of the skills he uses yet, still learning myself, been away from modelling for 30 odd years and only took it back up again a couple of years ago

I will be posting my LED layout diagram and some basic fitting test pictures with a couple leds and some wiring by the end of the day, but I did find an awesome 2-1/2 minute Star Wars Episode I, Naboo Starfighter Concept with those smart designers including Mr Lucas!

:pop:

You were so right when I started this SIG Lysus about worn out vehicles with other SW episodes. You mention that as my 1st reply from you. They mentioned that in this youtube as well. I never thought of that myself, but the sleek design did stick in my head and I always loved that machine along with the royal ship.:

It really shows Lucas' appreciation for classic cars, too. There's something very 40s/50s about it. Like an old Hudson Hornet.

Oh so true, along with the Queens Starship that really, is as we know an SR-71 blackbird of course but thats a bit later in the 60's, lol!

This particular post was deleted because at this point I lost the entire wing section of this model by a bad glue spill on it. and almost as bad, lost many of my pictures because of an error and would take too long to update. (no problem I got a new one and am continuing)

ooh thats coming along nicely, you definately have more room in your kit than mine and you r2 unit is a lot bigger so i cant light mine up, i really like the idea of the two leds for the photons with the red going through the clear led which goes blue, will the red led go out when the blue one comes on? if so are you going to switch this manually or use a timer or something?

wires on the wings, i kind have that issue too as my wings are a solid cast and not a two part moulding but i think I have figured mine out, regarding the two leds in each engine, i take it your wiring those two in series with one resistor covering them? if so then I tend to put the resistor on the cathode or -ve and would attach that near the power supply end so that Im not having to also hide resistors inside the model.

looking good though

Hi Terry, Yea it's a 1/48 so just like a P-51 or whatever at that scale, ive got a bit more room. So suprizing about that LED tho, in the movie Aniken fires the torpedo twice and it just shows the brief blue blast. Just clear otherwise. But in the Naboo Starfighter Concept video, I show at the top of my page here, John Duncan shows the underside of the Naboo with an in-flight view at 1:07 on the video and its RED!!! on there grahic drawing. This confused me so I will make the red led very dim to show, I dont know I guess, charging really, and then BANG the very bright blue beam! haha! Im doing this as a testament to ILM and having some artistic integrity, lol. As far as control, IF I HAVE time, I am going to connect all these LEDS to an Arduino or a PIC micro. Im an electronics guy by trade (well used to be) so putting a micro in this stuff is possible with me, but may be so much more work in the long run. If time is an issue I just may slap a silly led Christmas tree display that costs 4 bucks from bangood and call it a day! haha! I mentioned this to Neil as well who is making that real nice Trek kit and it would look just as cool. Here, Im almost making it airworthy..hahaha!

No in my case Terry because there are two of them, I need to have them in parallel with two resistors. I have allot of room in that Engine drum to fit it as well and ONLY 2 wires. A blue LED in particular has a very high voltage, over 3 volts, and most of the controllers use 3 to 5 volt power supplies, so with 2 blue leds they would not turn on in series. Two resistors as well to allow me to individually adjust brightness. As you know most red leds are less than 2 volts and would work fine in series at 5V. Yes the rest of my leds will all have the resistors near the power supply at the base just like yours.

I know your into pushing electrons as well like me, but if any one else that may not be into this stuff much reads this, and may want to use multiple blue leds on your kits here is a schematic of my wing section with 2 in parallel for 3-5V.
Even if you have a 3 volt power supply it may not be enuff to light, even one blue led so be careful. This blue LED is one of the best (many may be even higher) so at close to 3V this led is almost OFF! White ones may be even higher.. Always check the data sheet for Forward Voltage drop. Hope this helps!

OK were is my model, I need more plastic and building fun, this techno-crap is a drag to me now (hehehe)

excellent stuff, I can see your only wanting to have two wires coming out and that your using two different voltages of led my 4 engines are two sets of red 3-3.4v leds,2 x two in series covered by one resistor per pair wired in parallel if that makes sense and the blue one runs at around 3 volts so wiring that in series and csharing the earth. most circuit diagrams show the resistor on the negative or cathode side of the led so they should really be wired on the earth side of the led rather than the power side although it doesnt make much difference you want the working component to receive the power before the drain item (resistor) deals with the excess to avoid voltage drop before the power reaches the led i will basically be running 3 different coloured earth wires and one live wire into the kit as there is no room to put the leds and resistors in mine, that way when the wires come out the kit i know reds live, blue is earth for bank 1 of red, green is earth for bank2 of red and white is the cockpit led, this enables me to wire the resistors outside the model as i am incorporating a stand with a hollow tube to run the wiring into, finding it all very enjoyable so far, I'm running mine on a 9 volt setup

Naa no gurus here Terry, we are all in the same Super Science Scale Modeling Team!! All this stuff is our tools to make some really great looking stuff! I just got my arduino a few years ago and its cool for anyone to find out to program these guys to do neat control stuff. I was into micros most of my life as a trade but the arduino is something for anybody kinda, There is coding in it, but if you get the basic Idea about it, you can copy stuff quickly and get things working. You can get an Arduino Uno Rev3 (I would recommend) from that site and get into the free programmer for the mid 20 bucks or so, for everything, plug your LEDs into it with some resistors and your all set. Hmm about the same cost as a good Kit!! Just another tool.

So correct Lysus, ILM did love the style of the 40s and 50's and putting that a bit onto the starship styles of Star Wars 1.

Such a shame, but it's not worth it to beat yourself up to fix it if that's not fun for you. Have a drink, think about what to do next, we'll be waiting!

Oh shoot :bash:
You were smoking along on that build and the LED wiring was awesome

I am usually all about repair and recovery, but cement all over a model is a bit of a B to come back from
Sorry to hear you are having such bad luck.
I am moving my cement bottles up to the top of my desk away from my elbows and cleaning the messy desktop up tonight.

An old saying comes to mind with your plight:

Oh man - I just dropped by to catch up on the last few days reading and didn't expect this.

Really, really sorry to see this Tony - is there any way you could possibly turn it into a "going down in flames" kind of effect? I know it's not what you wanted but might still get something out of it?
Cheers, Neil

Thanks guys, yea, still finding it hard to get the groove back. Even looked on evilbay to get a new one (not diecast) but seeing it for a bit more than what I paid, but that was over 15 years ago too. Oh well, maybe an uplift with Paul and the Crew tomorrow night will be good. It may strike me up to look at some other kits in my stash.

The going down in flames isn't a bad idea...you could use your lighting to be fire and flames???

Is DrSprue the artist formally known as Saturn5Tony?

I hope it's not a requirement to change names each time we have a mishap otherwise I'm at least fifty behind already this year
