Why did you join ISM?

Post by GMahaffey »

I joined ISM because I wanted to take my modeling to another level. I saw kit reviews on YouTube and decided to join.

I think through watching vids by Paul and the crew.
At first, eager for knowledge, I looked into a few forums but now rarely go to any others. ISM was the only one I ever signed up for.

None of the others seem to have the depth of knowledge offered by ISM. Actually I must have lied above I did sign up for another because I remember my only post. It's quite a well known forum, I'm sure if I mentioned it (I wont) nearly everyone would have heard of it.
There was a main poster on there who I noticed was giving a lot of dodgy advice but being new I kept quiet.
Then on another post he was he was telling complete poop and everyone was thanking him.
I had to interject, I can't remember the details but the post was about Tamiya paint, he was saying something like the XF are acrylic and the X are enamel. I told him he was wrong, XF and X in both acrylic and enamel, denote the difference Flat versus Gloss etc blah blah blah
And even though he was completely wrong people joined up and had a go at me for saying he was wrong!
I was basically run out of town, being told from now on all my posts would be vetted and censored where necessary!

I haven't been back.

I think Paul's videos are the reason a lot of us came across the site.

Also when I started back in the hobby more and more of my searches for information brought me back here and the more I read the more I liked the informal style as well as the wealth of information. On many other forums (fora?) a simple request for help or information just descends into a cat fight between people with different entrenched positions who "know" they're right.

I finally took the plunge a year ago when I decided to join the Sci Fi group build and haven't looked back since.

Stumbling across this site and Pauls 'How to' videos opened up the door to a great hobby for me. Yes I had a go as a kid but there is such a wealth of knowledge and experience on this site you are able to continually improve and strive for personal goals. Members seem to be a very gracious and good humoured bunch to boot! Long may it continue

I should also add I was influenced in my decision by 3 or 4 major contributors. One of which is no longer contributing on ISM . It was always great to see him create so quickly, post it all regularly and show you how he did it.

Oh yeah, me too ...started exactly the same way.
Paul's videos and Mike 's postings brought me in and back to modelling so I know exactly where you are coming from.
Now with Ultimate products and the live show things have evolved even more. I have made some great internet friends on here with new guys like Lysus and Mick, to name a few, posting, pestering and motivating each other in threads.
I am less than enamoured by the Facebook stuff just for the simple reason it is so transient and you do not get the same interactions with people...my 2 cents on that.

Yes I find Facebook too hard to do that and like you it put's me off. Although I do use it to track down kits and message my daughter who is working in New York and was poached to start her new job on Monday. Makes me proud to think she stood out enough to be wanted by another company.... me proud dad... :D

By not being a member of ISM Facebook you are missing out massively so much stuff shared there that isn't on the forum and vice versa too.

Hi this is only my opinion I did join FB and it has ruined ISM for me that's why I hardly post anymore there ar other reason to but that another story I joined ISM back in Dec 14 and there was a different member base back then and most of them have now moved on sadly and FB had not taken over.
Joined FB and I did not set the security setting correctly (my fault I know) and someone with good intention linked one of my builds to FB, lets say a few people got my name/ email address and went to town, (1) over the build its self, (2) my painting ability which to be fair is crap, basically not good, so closed as much as its possible could friends, family the lot, and will never ever use it again
On the forum its about the post, the story, fun and I have learnt so much on the forum. FB to me is just a bunch of photos & smiles and a dangerous place

I don't think Facebook works for this kind of thing. I am a member of the page and get frustrated that posts appear at the top for a few minutes then disappear forever as they rarely show up in the search. I look at it from time to time but don't feel that I'm missing out by not looking at it more regularly.

I joined the forum because I googled scale modelling forum and this was the best looking one that came up - no rivet counters or show-offs was the clincher for me. Some of the other ones I came across are an absolute disgrace and do nothing for the hobby whatsoever!

Hey! What did I do :

I do admit I do love the banter between members on the threads.

Why did I join?
I'm not sure really
I ghosted the forum for quite some time before joining up
And while I looked at other sites, I found myself coming back more and more to ism for the answers.
I don't do the live shows and hangout etc as the time difference is a killer for me.

Well nobody can have shared your work from ISM Facebook as its a closed group, the only way you will really have an issue on Facebook is by clicking on iffy links which is common knowledge. In over 10 years I've never had an issue on Facebook.

Facebook hasn't taken over at all, the forum Facebook and the you tube channel all are equal in ISM. Theres double the membership on Facebook so its going to be busier, if you view it regularly then you can keep up with whats happening no problem.

I don't see how an issue on Facebook can ruin Ism for you?

Hi Paul, yes they can shared your work if they are ISM member and apart of that closed group which he is, he is very well known, liked and respected by myself included. It was the FB members that where the trouble not the ISM member just for the record.

"I don't see how an issue on Facebook can ruin Ism for you?" They have my real name, email address and loads of Brad Pitt emails.I don't post much because the risk of it all starting up again, I look in about twice a week now that's why I've moved to a new forum, new name, I'm total unknown there which is nice.

I'm afraid that you couldn't have posted onto the ISM Facebook page - it is impossible to share work posted directly onto a closed group (I just checked again to make sure). Is it possible that you posted the work onto your own page and then you (or possibly your friend) shared the post to ISM? In these cases it seems it is possible to share the work more widely as the post isn't on the closed group. It may not be something to hold against ISM anyway :th:

And in terms of the Forum vs Facebook; I much prefer the forum, it just feels more in depth and interesting. I find with Facebook in general it is just something to scroll through when on your lunch break or something, whereas the forum is something for which I make more of an effort.

As said above you cannot share from a closed group on Facebook which ism is so you are 100% wrong sorry Pete. Whatever happened has nothing at all to do with ISM and must either be from a different group or your own page.

So you've joined a different forum and don't post much here now because of an issue with Facebook?

Sorry guys, I didn't mean to turn it into this Facebook debate, my bad
As was said, it works for some and not for others...I don't want to invest the time into it, waste enough on the computer already
I will vouch for Jason 100% he would not do anything with malice

Lets get back to the good things about joining ISM ;)

I didn;t mean to suggest I thought you were lying, was just pointing out that the post couldn't possibly have been on ISM as it is impossible to share. Unfortunately Facebook can cause such confusion, personally I have never found it to be particularly userfriendly and I have never fully got used to it, and I joined over 10 years ago when it was still limited to universities

That's your choice Pete and a real shame but I can think of several very very weird posts this year that have had a few of us wondering what the hell is going on, this is just another one.
Hi Paul you will just have to ask Jason, but if you think i'm lying so be it as for weird posts that have had a few of us wondering ? but this is the post.

There's a huge prize pot to be had with two ways to win something; prizes awarded by mystery judges as well as random prize draws just for finishing.
This week, have a look at privatepete's Star Destroyer above a city diorama, an amazing build so far done with some household items:

That's a post shared from the forum to Facebook, that's different and happens all the time. Nothing can happen to that post other than other members come to the forum and look at your work. Not once did I say you were lying.

After the fuss you made above about Facebook you then just went and joined the Facebook page :ooops:

I just don't understand the issue with sharing a forum thread on Facebook?

No real name or email address was shared, was it? Anything shared on here is available for other ISM members to see, so what's wrong with someone admiringly highlighting it to other members?

And as I said earlier that's nothing to do with ISM. Shame you feel the need to leave over something so trivial. But I guess that's your choice

I find with Facebook in general it is just something to scroll through when on your lunch break or something, whereas the forum is something for which I make more of an effort.
Twokidsnosleep wrote: Mon Sep 18, 2017 4:52 pm As was said, it works for some and not for others...I don't want to invest the time into it, waste enough on the computer already
I think this sums it up succinctly for me too.

Similar to Digger I joined facebook a few years back to keep in touch with a friend who was moving overseas for work, and it was a great way to keep in touch with people I didn't see that often and exchange ideas etc with like minded people in special interest groups. Somewhere along the way it just seems to have become a way for people to share what they're going to eat, what they're eating and in a couple of dubious cases what they've just eaten! As a result I spend less time on there than I used to.

Yep there's a lot of good stuff on the facebook group and I enjoy browsing through it when I get the chance, but personally I prefer the structured approach of the forum - diff'rent strokes right?

As a general rule of thumb I don't post anything on the internet that I wouldn't want to be shared around the world whether it be forum, facebook or anything else. The internet is notoriously leaky, and there are plenty of ill-minded people out there trying to make it leakier all the time.
Cheers, Neil

Trying to TA a class here, shall we call it a done discussion and move on?

Since I'm super late (and totes paying attention to the lecturer right now) I might as well chime in; I'm yet another person who stumbled upon Paul's old 109 series late December 2015. The wife and kids were in Portland for the week so I could study and take/proctor finals and I spent my nights going through them one after another. I had been thinking about taking up the hobby again since all I did was read like three books a week (so reading for fun sucked) and the babies made it hard to quiet my mind. The hobby seemed like it was a great way to do that, so...

By Friday I was a member, and by the end of the month I had an airbrush.

And here we are...

Here's my story, pretty much the same as others. I was looking for something to "keep me off the streets" and was researching RC planes, something I've always been interested in. But found two problems, it was more expensive than I had budgeted and, having bought a controller and flight sim, found that I can't fly! I then stumbled on to, you guessed it, Paul's videos and ISM. Recalling how much I had enjoyed model building as a kid, I was hooked. Yeah, this can get expensive, but at least you don't spend hundreds of dollars and then crash into a tree!! I found myself coming back to the forums over and over to learn. The GBs and SIGs looked like a great way to generate ideas and motive me to finish builds and try new things. And they have done just that. And of course the camaraderie here is the best.

RE the forum vs FB? I'm firmly on the forum "camp". Sorry, I just don't get FB. I find it chaotic and disorganized. I find the forum very neat, organized and easy to use; must be my engineering background. I like being able to quickly skim through "New Posts" and pick out the things that interest me, and then jump directly to the replies I have not yet read. I've visited other forums but don't find the easy of use and content as good as it I here. I know I'm missing some good content on FB, I just wish some of it made its way over here. Well as others said, to each his own!

I was researching kits and found some kit reviews done by Paul and Lee. Tbh I like the way Paul does them. I just don't like that single camera view where you hold up the sprue/parts up to the camera. I then stumbled on Paul's airfix bf109 technique tutorial build, and then I joined the forum. I joined the FB page, but don't really visit often.
