1/72 Revell B-17G Flying Fortress.

So this will be my 1st build thread on ISM. I have no set plan for how I'm going to go about this build I'll just see what take my fancy as I plod along.
So here goes (dramatic drum roll)

Well that was exciting wasn't it.
So the 1st 5hing I did was put the bombs together and give them a thin stippling with Mr surfacer 500 to give them some texture.

Then they were painted with Mr color chromate 2 from their WW2 Allies interior set. Then using my infini mat I cut some thin washi tape strips to mask the banding then they were painted with Mr color 38 olive drab 2

They were then given a very gentle dry brush with my mr metal brush (never cleaned so always good for dry brushing) and this is the result

Next I assembled the bomb bay and sprayed it with decanted AS-12

Then it was onto constructing the cockpit and other internals.

On the next picture you can see the retaining ring. It is a loose fit but TET is not our friend here due to its capillary action. So just a tiny bit of gel superglue holds it but still allows for movement.

At this time I decided I wanted to do a bit more to this kit so I decided I would open up all the internal doors. No specific reason other than I can, so will and did
.
I've also decided to make the quilted internal covering but have to wait for my local model shop to open so I can buy some milliput.
Now that I've decided to do silly stuff inside I figured it would be rude to ignore the outside so that is now going to be fully riveted. But after 2 hours of looking and failing to find plans it was suggested to me that I could look at sprue shots of the 1/32 HK Models kit to get an idea of their layout. So I did, but I also have found pictures of the instructions now too so will see what can be scratch built in 1/72 version. But anyway the rivets

I use the rb productions tool (till I can afford a set of rosie the riveter )
And the 1st wing surface done

All done freehand for good or bad but I'm too lazy to get out the Dino? Dimo? Tape well what ever it's called.
So that's it for step 1 of my make it up as I go along build. And my advice so far would be don't do it how I do it. Do it right instead

I did consider doing the same to my current Nine O None build but the fuselage would need doing to match which for me at present was just a step to far.

right now for PT2 i suck at build threads so this will take us through to the finish.
i painted the insides. nice and simple

Now for those of you with a nervous disposition or if you are easily offended look away now.


YES I PAINTED ON THE SPRUE

So after that despicable act (god some people treat it like a hate crime)
i did some more paint bits and started the weathering on the bomb bay side walls with a dirty oily brown enamel wash


next i promise you that you can not see where i smeared wet paint

next i got a little bit fancy and made a map light and did the wood grain on the tan panted ares


whilst doing those i had a thinned mix of Mig grey green PLW and Mig starship filth wash slapped all over the inside drying

And bombs fitted
and a bit of brush painting

Internal wash wiped away and dry brushed with metallics, doesn't show up great in the picture but actually looks okay.

and then because im fancy(as mentioned earlier) i did some maps that will never be seen to go with the light that will never be seen

So here is the belly ball (no idea of the real name) masked and some of the tail gun bits (yet another technical term) just some basic brush painting.

some ammo boxes painted and installed. The dry brushing on the ribs mentioned in part one is kinda visible in this picture.
Now check this out for some quality clear part moulding
these need fitting before the fuselage goes together so rather than snap them and loose them later i cut the barrels of now and secured them to a bit of tape for later
now all the internal sub-assemblies are fitted.[/url]
Then the fuselage is put together and glued. then i realise im dumb arse who forgot a kinda important step like fitting the rear wheel well.
Thankfully i hadn't fitted the tail gun section yet so i could correct my less than stellar mistake

So now that i fixed that and im obviously everyone's favourite modeller (whos currently building this kit in these markings on this site who is called wolfgangtheseal) again its time for the engines.

Lots of bits but actually rather simple. Thease were painted with decanted TS-30 and had a touch of black enamel wash to highlight the details.
hen fitted to the wing. the round bits in the centre were brush painted greyish blue (revell 79) then a light brown enamel wash was added. probably nothing like the real thing but i think it gives a used look that works okay.

Whilst that was drying i got back to the riveting
Then after that super fun not frustrating and repetitive at all job i popped the cowlings? on and except for more bloody riveting wings are done.

So that is it for this episode of the riveting new series (see what i did there) of me building a B-17G

So now the fuselage is together the nose was masked with tamiya curve tape and tamiya normal tape

The wing roots were given a few layers of Mr. surficer 500 which once dry was cleaned up with self levelling thinner.

then the ugliest clear part ever was fitted

The tail wings (i have no idea on the proper names for stuff) were fitted then foam was added to the bomb bay and wheel wells. then the whole model was primed with Tamiya X1 gloss black thinned with SLT. once sprayed it looked A bit rough i sprayed SLT over it and it probably increased the gloss effect 100%

AK polished aluminium was used as the base metal colour

Then i embarked on the masking Odyssey
1st up the red bits Then the green bits Mr. color 304 olive drab. Tamiya do this tape with plastic attached for stupid money. I got this from Wilko for 60p
Then a little an added and paint thinned a bit more and some bleaching added.
Then the same was done for the underside

Then it was time for crazy masking time. a combination of Wilko washi tape (the red stuff) Tamiya curve tape (white stuff) and Tamiya tape (yellow stuff) and post-it notes (big square yellow things) yes i will teach you to suck eggs too

so the engine bits had their green added but one has a bit extra so tape was peeled back and more asking done

Then i moved on to tinting panels. i use post-it notes for the masking and Alcad for the tints as i find it very easy to achieve subtle colour build up with them

whist doing that i also did the leading edges that i had forgot earlier

Then on with decals. Although given 48 hours to cure some how the AK metals reacted to x20a which is what i usually use to bed down decals. So i went with my Mr. hobby products.

I painted the landing gear with TS-30 because it is a very bright silver which i hope will give a nice contrast with the oil weathering.

The oils (mig starship filth) were just slapped on left to dry then using a dry brush removed.

The whole model was then given two coats of Alclad aqua gloss (because the ak stuff reacts with everything i own apparently. then the whole model was given a starship filth enamel wash. its a nice dirty oil colour. This was just wiped off in the direction of airflow with paper towel.

Then it was onto Hand painting the turbo exhaust type things.

Because i want you to use your imagination and not because i forgot to take a photo you need to picture that i got some tamiya weathering master B (rust) & C (orange rust) dabbed a wet cotton bud in them and then applied to the turbo exhaust type things.

Now for the exhausrt stains. My way of doing it has always sucked so ive tried something new this time. Its my own idea but i doubt its original in anyway.
i sprayed down some Alclad jet exhaust then sprayed very thin Mr. color tan 44 over the top of it.
but arrrrggggghhhhhh i hear you say "your new way sucks worse than your old way and i haven't even seen your old way" Well never fear i then went over it again with Alclad jet exhaust. And if you still say "your new way sucks worse than your old way and i haven't even seen your old way" Well fair enough but you obviously also hate puppies.

And a little bit on top


And that is it. i stuck the landing gear on. stuck some barrels on. removed clear parts masking and had a shinny plane.


This was finished a few days ago at time of writing for wings and things models show(so not terrible for a 6 day build) and i won a prize for something i built 12 month ago.
