Extreme metal problems

Hi All

I am currently having an issue with AK Extreme Metals.

The issue is when masking on top of the Extreme Metal. When I come to remove the tape it removes some of the Extreme Metal. I have tried de tacking the masking tape by sticking it to my t shirt first but its still removing the it.

Any advice would be gratefully received

What are you airbrushing with it, how long are you leaving it, before removing the tape?

Are you applying the metal colour over a primer coat?

Thanks for the replies.

I’m spraying it neat over a primer of Ultimate black which is then left at least 24hrs before masking.

I only leave the tape on while spraying once it’s sprayed I wait a couple of minutes and then remove the tape.

Is it taking the primer off too? If it is, the primer that the issue or rather the surface it's being applied too. Try airbrushing the same surface without primer and see if the Extreme metal is pulled off.

Hi Steven, that is the problem with metal finish paints I'm afraid, they don't hold up well to masking. They'll even rub off if you handle them too much. I believe it's to do with the metal flakes in the paint. This is what gives them the shiny finish, but it makes the paint very delicate. You could seal the metal finish with a gloss coat before masking.

It’s not removing the primer and to be honest it’s not removing all the Metal it appears to be taking the shine off and small amount of the metal paint.

The problem is some of the parts are white plastic so I need to put a black primer on to get the effect of the metal.

I’ll have a google when I get home on how to mask it.

I didn’t realise you couldn’t just mask it I have never needed to mask it before as I had only used it on armour.

What sort of tape are you using? if I may ask?
Maybe the product application isn't the issue but the tape used may be responsible for the problem at hand !

It’s the tamiya tape that I use.

Just a little update.

Had a quick google when I got home and apparently AK had a bad batch of the extreme metal and it looks like I have some colours from that batch.

Colours from the bad batch are not unavailable to take masking tape and it just pulls the colour off.

Tested all my colours tonight and it looks like out of ten colours I have four are from the bad batch. The other colours work fine with no issue at all if I use masking tape on them.

Problem solved just going to cost me around £20 to replace fault colours.

If there was a bad batch, the retailer should have been notified and withdrawn them. Contact AK give them the batch No's and they should replace them, they're good like that.

Hi All just a little update.

Finally got a response explained the situation and they've told me to use their black base primer as that could be the issue if I still have the same problem to get back in touch.

Going to give it a go over the weekend trying all the colours I have over the black base to see what happens.

Hi All

Gave the Black Base a go over the weekend the section it off to create a grid then sprayed each area with a different colour.

Left it to dry for 24hrs then applied some masking tape. Out of the 10 colours I have 8 were ok but the Gold and Chrome either peeled off the primer or the tape left a visible line in the finish.

Have emailed AK just waiting for a reply.
