New Zvezda Hind

Post by RangerNeil »

Got this in the mail tonight - Zvezda announcing a 1/4 Scale Mi-24 hind. I am a bit confused though - the article says Quarter Scale which to me is 1:4 but Zvezda's spiel says 1:48??:

A 1/4 scale Hind would need one heck of a shelf! :jd: :eeek:

Yeah it is right 1/4 is 1/48 scale, it's a weird system. I will be keeping a eye out for the arrival of this one... :th: :th: :cheers2:

I don't build any aircraft/whirley birds but that might be something I'd get. I love the look of the Hind

Kind of what I was thinking!! It would take up most of the length of our dining/sitting room - and thats just the fuselage!!! The rotor blades would take up more than the width of the house.. The trumpeter kit @ 1/32 will take up a coffee table when I get around to doing it. Digger is right - quarter scale equalling 1/48 IS weird. But I think I might go for it myself - I love Mi-24's - they exemplify the typical Russian approach to a problem. :)

      Looks awesome.

Reminds me of a great quote from Tom Clancy's The Cardinal of the Kremlin. Its partly set in Afghanistan and one of the freedom fighters (no politics here) is talking about the Russian forces in the country. He says:

'We are not afraid of the Russians but we are afraid of their helicopters'
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

One of the - many - tricks employed by the 40th Army's attached VVS* Component was to remove the troop seats from the rear compartment of Hinds, fill the area with reloads and armament techs then fly out and shoot the Mujahadeen up until the weapon loads were exhausted. When they flew off the Mujahadeen thought they had returned to Bagram or a similar air base to re-arm. Instead the Hinds actually dropped to ground a safe distance from the combat and re-armed in the field, the pilots helping in the process. Meantime the Mujhadeen having worked out how long it would take for the Hinds to get back to base, rearm, refuel and return would emerge from their hiding place to resume the attack. Just as the re-armed Hinds appeared catching them in the open..... I forget the Russian term for it now but it was roughly equivalent to the US term "Turkey shoot"...
Another one employed once the Muj got their hands on Stingers was for a lone hind to make a pass at speed where the Stingers were known to be operating, armed to the teeth with flare dispensers. The Mujahadeen would see the lone Hind and fire a Stinger - mean time another Hind hovering at altitude would note the launch point and unload a salvo at that point whilst the first one dropped every flare it had in an attempt to decoy the Stinger - it worked 9 times out of 10.. Took a long while for the Mujahadeen to cotton on to this one as invariably the salvo tore up a large area of ground taking out the Stinger launcher, the guys with the reloads and anyone else in the vicinity so no one got to come back and report.

Did I ever mention I absolutely love Hinds??

      * VVS - Военно-воздушные силы or Military Air Forces for those unfamiliar. The 40th Army in Afghanistan was unique in having its own air arm rather than a separate command structure. It worked very well.

1/4 scale because in Imperial measurement, 1ft = 1/4 inch.

Well - I got an e-mail from Arma Models the other day announcing the imminent arrival of this kit. Apparently Zvezda are dipping their toe in the water with this to see how well 1/48 sells and if it goes well other Mil's and Kamov's will follow. So Arma are pushing it to ensure Zvezda carry on with the range. They are offering a pre-order deal to get customers to support this consisting of the following package for 2657 Rubles or roughly £30:

        4823 Soviet attack helicopter Mi-24 V / VP, 1/48 - 1.00 pcs

        AM4835-S Standard set of add-ons for pre-ordering the Mi-24 V / VP - 1.00 pcs.

        AM4840 Mi-24 camouflage stencil - 1.00 pcs

        AM4838 Metal Nurs 57mm (1 pc.) (Not for free sale! Only with pre-order Mi-24!) - 1.00 pcs

AM4834 Nurs Block UB-32A-24 (Not for free sale! Only with pre-order Mi-24!) - 1.00 pcs

        AM4833 NURS B8V20 block (2 pcs.) (Not for free sale! Only with pre-order Mi-24!) - 1.00 pcs

        AM4837 Metal Nurs 80mm (1 pc.) (Not for free sale! Only with pre-order Mi-24!) - 1.00 pcs

AM4836 Stand transparent with engraving Mi-24 (Not for free sale! Only with pre-order Mi-24!) - 1.00 pcs

So I have put my name down for one of these packages.... Cue collective cries of shock and horror from the forum that I am actually getting it myself this time!!

Watch this space for updates! Right now they don't have a price for the actual kit so the quoted pre-order price is a store estimate only. That said - the store is in Russia, Zvezda is a Russian company so hopefully they have a reasonable idea of what its likely to be. Apparently - should the sale of the Mi-24 reach expectations the next proposal is the Mi-8 followed by a Kamov possibly a Ka-29. Anyone care to imagine what it will be like trying to get one of those complex Kamov rotor heads assembled in 1/48?? Bad enough in 1/72....

To be totally honest - its doing my head in. Prior to the COVID-19 clusterf*ck everything was going well. Then the crisis hit - shops out there reduced man-power to tick-over level and the Russian quarantine made the UK lock-down look like school detention. They went back last week as Russia started lifting the quarantine and I was hoping things might get back to normal - only for today to have the servers controlling e-mail into and out of the Russian federation to decide my mail address was a potential spam one - so it got blocked. I've now had to submit a ticket to their admins explaining why I am not a spam bot and need to be able to send mail to the Russian Federation to my friends and to the shop in question. Luckily one of the guys out there is on WhatsApp so I could let him and the others know why I've gone dark.

Absolutely need the 3D cockpit set. I have the 1/72 version for that Hind and it is amazingly detailed. The other thing that should be in the order is the set of 3D rivet decals for entire Hind.....

Hope the crane arrives soon for you :) - one of the weird things I've found about Russian Post is their tracking system gives me a better idea of where things are in the UK than Royal Mails. RM will say a package has arrived in the UK on a certain date time and is the International Handling Centre. Russian Post's tracking system says when it arrived there, then tells me when it left the arrivals warehouse into Customs, when Border Farce sent me the money with menaces e-mail or snail mail, when it left customs back to the warehouse and then when it left the IHC to the regional centre... :) :)

Just heard tonight - the package had left the Moscow Sharapovo distribution centre for international delivery!!!
ha....it is now leaving it's departure point.   Another month and it will be in your hands. Ya need the 3d quintas cockpit set too....so cool.
                    :th: :cheers2:

Ps... I'v got a coaling crane from CMK coming...I hope...I have no idea where it is, but it is only 2 weeks since payment. Still nice to know where one's stuff is.

Absolutely need the 3D cockpit set. I have the 1/72 version for that Hind and it is amazingly detailed. The other thing that should be in the order is the set of 3D rivet decals for entire Hind.....

The Russians watch everyone and everything are you not surprized, probably know what you had for brecky and what time you will be unavailable......
It is weird though the locals can't match the Russians info and disseminate it. Who's your post office working for ? :shhh:
