Diorama Storage

Post by bfrd »

What do you guys do with your dioramas after you build them? I built the diorama below for the summer sci-fi a few years back and now it is just collecting dust.

I have the scout and speeder in my display case, but the diorama is just too big. I have almost decided to throw it out, but it is painful to think about throwing something away that I spent so much time making.

What do you do?

Dio's do take more space and more time to create. There is a lot of effort put into one and we can all understand the reluctance to ditch them. Unless you have a huge amount of space or a place to gift them too you have a problem. Selling on ebay is a solution although with the obvious problem of packing and withstanding the postal system.

Oh man story of my life
Tops of the bookshelves seems to be one of my favourite spots
Just been thinking that I need to do a cull of my finished kits to make some space

This is a really good topic about storage of completed models and what people do with them

Ikea has a variety of display cases in different sizes and they all can adjust the shelf height for tall dios.

Now I won't build bigger than one of the cases can hold.

I decided to move a couple of finished kits to the office. I may give some more away. I am still on the fence about the Endor scene. Even my wife thought it would be wrong to throw it away. I have been trying to clean up my hobby area for the past several weeks. I spend almost an hour a day and usually throw away nearly a garbage bag full of junk each session. How on Earth did I acquire so much stuff? Oh wait, I know. "Look at that packing foam, that's some good foam. I'm keeping that for sure!"

I was liking the idea of getting one of those foam cutters that are attached to a table and was warming to the idea immensely. Picked out the one I wanted then made the huge mistake of giving myself some time to review the idea. Came to a nasty thought as I was yet again adding shelving space that dio's take way to much space and where was I going to put both the tool and resulting dio's.......shelved that idea for another house and another time

More shelves is always an option or the IKEA display cases.

Do you have a local model shop? I've thought a couple of times to put my builds in the shop for others to see and enjoy. We also have several local museums I would be okay with gifting my models to.

Museum acquisitions are weird in the US and can get real weird depending on the value of the gift and if you give the gift with any stipulations. Generally that is reserved for super expensive stuff (read more the $5,000 USD) so museums don't always want to take gifts/donations if the stipulations put on the item are difficult for them to deal with.
