Making 1/35 house bricks

I've been trying to make some house bricks. Using the silicone mould I got from diorama debris
In the first batch I used quick drying poly filer

What's the best stuff to use?

Hey, nice effort on those.

As far as material I believe plaster is the most commonly used when making bricks in moulds, I've never done it myself but the terrain book I have next to me says to use plaster.

Fred, I have the same mould but use plaster to cast mine. When pouring your filler/plaster of choice, add a little rinse aid, we're talking one or two drops, this will make it flow in to the crevices more easily. Also give the mould a clean with a toothbrush underwater with some rinse aid, this will minimize any bubbles.

I will say though, after having cast quite a few moulds with plaster, the brick mould is a PITA to do without any bubbles. However, even bricks that aren't cast properly can still be used, just cut bits off and use them as chipped/broken bricks, it's rubble after all.

What did you use to colour the bricks? Really considering getting some of the moulds in 1/35 and 1/48.

I used tamiya acrylic paint

You could try adding paint to plaster too, though the paint may react with the plaster in some way depending on which paint you use.

@TonyGol they're great value considering the cost of them will get you just a couple of bags. With the molds you can cast as many as you like.

@Fred Also, I forgot to mention, for those of us who do not have access to proper casting equipment, another tool I use in my arsenal for casting is... How can I put this correctly... A vibrating appliance. Yes, no, not a you know what, a massaging one from a company called Homemedics. I use it on the surface just under the mould, it vibrates all the bubbles to the surface, sometimes, and if I've prepped well, I get perfect casts.

I've tried a few different materials for my bricks. the first was poly filler which wasn't that good lots of air bubbles. second i tried some plaster paris from a plaster bandage from work. (i work in a hospital so can come by some good materials) I'm gonna try some plaster board adhesive next plus i need to but some rinse aid.
I plan on buying some a more moulds from diorama debris they seem good value. Once i have a the hang of what material works best

Thanks for the kind comments Fred, most appreciated. I buy my plaster (Dental Plaster) in bulk from an online shop called Tiranti, they're an art store which deal with casting/moulding, always good value and a 5kg tub lasts quite some time! Rinse Aid wise I use Finish Rinse Aid with a hint of lemon (I didn't want lemon, that's all they had!) So things smell nice, haha. I researched it all quite some time ago when I first got in to doing my own casts, there's a variety of plasters you can get, from the super cheap kids type plaster (of paris), to the slightly more expensive but much more durable Dental plaster.
