Right so I've decided to join in and as I'm looking to get an airbrush set-up sorted I went hunting in the loft for one of my kits from back in early 2000s when I was last into scale modelling.

And this one jumped out at me. Now the version I have is the older kit and does not include the PE items or metal gun barrel so I will be sourcing these else where. (If anyone has a good link id appreciate it!

Also the decals have yellowed so will need to get some more of these too.

So the history of this little AFV.

The Leichter Panzerspähwagen (German: roughly "Light Armoured Reconnaissance Vehicle") were a series of light four-wheel drive armoured cars produced by Nazi Germany from 1935 to 1944.
They were developed by Eisenwerk Weserhütte of Bad Oeynhausen. Chassis were built by Auto Union in Zwickau and assembled by F. Schichau of Elbing and Maschinenfabrik Niedersachsen in Hanover-Linden.
It used the chassis of the standard sPkw I Horch 801 (heavy car) with an angled armoured body and turret.
The rear-mounted engine was a 67 kW (90 hp) Horch 3.5 petrol engine, giving it a road speed of 80 km/h (50 mph) and a cross-country speed of 40 km/h (25 mph). It had a maximum range of 300 km (186 mi).
Used by the reconnaissance battalions (Aufklärungs-Abteilung) of the Panzer divisions, the type performed well enough in countries with good road networks, like those in Western Europe. However, on the Eastern Front and in North Africa, this class of vehicle was hampered by its relatively poor off-road performance. In those theaters, it gradually found itself replaced in the reconnaissance role by the Sdkfz 250 half-track. The Sdkfz 250/9 was the Sdkfz 250 with the same turret as the Sdfkz 222.

I have decided to do a small diorama with this one of an SS vehicle stopped at a rest point somewhere in northern Europe. and the crew passing the time chatting. So some nice figures will be sourced/converted too. (I have mainly been a figure painter so this progect will cross over nicely for my return to armour. Also this will be the first wheeled vechile I have attempted. Love tracks too much!.

The sprues some nice detail though will benefit for some after market items

Overall looking forward to this build and up skilling myself will photo etch and after market items and some more advanced weathering than I have attempted before.

Try sticking the decals in the window for a few days, I have been told by a reliable source that it gets rid of the yellowing.

Okay so got a little bit done tonight.

Thought I would check out some of the parts I might want to replace with after market items.

Wheels

They are very nicely detailed and I'm liking the tread on the tyres so I will be using these.

I also had a look at the figure that came on the sprue and apart from a poor fit at the waist (Not to hard a fix with putty) he will be usable as well. (Though I will be replacing the anti grenade mesh with PE)

I like to mount my figure on a temporary base for painting so for your entertainment I present break-dancing Nazi!

Yeah just what I was looking for though will most likely just go for the turret and mesh.

Thats alot of PE with the full upgrade kit and not sure id want to take the plunge that much. (Only done a few small bits with PE)

I bought a PE set for my AS90, first use of PE as well. I didn't use half of it. Same on my Me110, had a full PE cockpit tub, but I just added some of the PE parts to the kit tub instead.

Right managed to get a little more done tonight.

Lower hull and drive is coming together still some more detail parts to add but overall I'm happy with the detail on this kit so far.

Also filled the gap on the crew member.

Will be getting the figure primed and start getting some colour on him tomorrow want to see how well the face comes out as the details still pretty hard to be sure about with the shiny plastic.

So been looking for some nice figures to add to this. And nothing has grabbed me yet so any suggestions for SS to go with this will be gladly accepted.

Enjoying the build and taking it nice and slow for once. Looking forward to getting some painting done tomorrow.

Right so a few member on here have mentioned that they struggle or are not happy with their results on figures.

I'm no master-craftsman but as I come from a war-gaming background I have painted alot of figures.

Would you guys like a step by step photo tutorial/example of how I paint my figures?

I think this would add something more to my build and hopefully encourage more to add figures to their already awesome builds (Which through your help mine will hopefully get reach someday.

)

Anyway let me know what you guys think.

Personally I am not fussed about a tutorial on figure painting, as like yourself I am from a wargaming background and so have painted many figures as well. However generally its a great idea, so I say go for it! I know for some modellers painting figures is a daunting prospect and so would welcome any tips.

Right update time.

Didn't manage to get any painting done on the figures as my primer ran out!! so this will have to wait till I can pick some up at the weekend.

But I have finish assembling the lower hull and the drive. Wheels havent been glued for ease of painting later on.

Some nice details even though most will not be seen on the final product.

Okay small update

We have primer!!

So we have 2 figures here I decided the second one though not part of the GB would be a better subject for a step by step.

I will be painting the crew member using the same process at the same time.

I'm hoping to get these done tomorrow and will aim to get the step by step up Saturday evening/ Sunday morning.

I promise a better quality images (hopefully!!)

I use the same process for all my figures and it works on 28mm wargame figures so Im sure it will work for 1/48 too.

So got some more done last night.

Completed the gun cradle and the fixings.

Not happy with the main gun barrel and have decided to replace it with an after market part.

Figures done. They wont win any medals but they will do for my purposes.

Final weathering and matt varnish will be done on the final diorama to tie it all together.

I am editing and putting together the step by step and will upload as soon as its done.

Okay so on with the step by step.

For these I primed them with black as the uniforms would be dark and this would help to darken the end finish.
Though you could use any colour for this depending on the finish you want.

I always start with the skin as this is the lowest layer on the figure so clean up will be easier on subsequent layers (Uniform etc.)

The paints I used where

The brand and type of paint is down to personal preference but you will need Your main skin colour (Flat flesh in this case) Are darker shade (Tallarn flesh) and a highlight (Light flesh)
And finally a flesh coloured wash.
(For female flesh you will want to have a lighter shade as this results in a more natural look.)

Step one.
Coat any area of skin in the shade colour. Use thinned paint and build this up in layers until a solid colour is reached.

Step two.
Now we move on to the main skin tone. Again use thinned paint to layer and leave the lowest parts of the skin and concentrate and the higher areas.

As you can see the areas to layer will be forehead, cheeks, chin, nose, ears and neck on the face and on the hands I left in between the fingers and around where the hands meet the sleeves.

Step three.
Now on to the highest parts of the skin top of the cheeks bridge of the nose tops of the ears and front of the chin.

For the hands concentrate on the knuckles and any other raised areas.

At this stage the skin tones will be quite harsh so we now need to wash all the skin areas in the flesh wash.
I chose to do this twice to give a darker tanned look as my figures are going to be in a summer setting.

The first picture shows one coat of wash and the second and third after two coats of wash. This shows an easy way to a tanned complexion or a more natural skin tone.
The skin is now finished and you could move on to the rest of the figure.

Eyes.
On these small scale figures their is no need to paint eyes as they look good as is.
For one of these I painted the eyes in-case you wanted to add these.

You will need a good brush with a fine point and some white/ivory paint and black.

First carefully colour the whites with paint being careful to only fill the eyeball and not the surrounding area

Next dot the iris/pupil in black (using colour at this scale or smaller doesn't scale well)

To avoid getting the shocked expression it is best to offset the pupils slightly to one side and ensure that it covers from top to bottom of the whites.
I painted my looking towards the right.

Next I tided up any areas of the uniform I hit with the skin tones black.

For the uniform I used these paints.

I used light grey for the undershirts the dark grey for the main uniform and a black wash to go over this.

Once the wash was dry i then painted in the details medals, insignia, red ribbing and any other details I wanted to add (Hair was also painted brown as I forgot to do this after the skin!! )

These can now be varnished and weathered as needed.

And that is a brief step by step of who I paint all my Figures below are some more examples using slightly different tones for different effects.

Overall I hope this maybe of some use to someone and encourages you to try figures.

Their are lots of tutorials out their on YouTube and in painting forums if you want more information on advanced techniques.

Small update interior sprayed black and sealed it all up and got everything primed.

Except the turret as I'm still waiting for my PE grenade mesh.

At a stop now until all my airbrushing set up arrives (Took the plunge and very excited to try it out.)

Will be hitting the pound shop at the weekend for supplies to begin work on the base!!

Right update time.

As I have been unable to continue with painting due to waiting for compressor and PE to show up I have started on the base.

So picked up a cheap photo frame from the local pound shop.

Removed the glass and sealed the back on with some white glue the sprayed it black and masked of the edges.

So I am going for the country road looking based so got the air dry clay out and shaped out the basic shape with drainage ditches to the sides.

Once that had dried I watered down some pva with water and painted on the road section. then covered with a mix of fine sand and slate.

Once this has dried I will get it primed ready for colour later on. Also managed to find some PE plants that I might add to the verges along with grass Etc..

Update time!!!

As my PE grenade mesh has arrived I can finally finish construction.

This is my first attempt at using PE for anything complex.
And I'm happy with my results.

So this is the kit but only using the grenade mesh

Lots of little tiny parts with this and I imagine that using it all would give very nice results.

First step is to form the frame.

Then add the mesh parts.

And the final product with radio antenna attached aswell.

So I learned a few things doing this.

1. its fiddly to assemble.
2. bending the parts and keeping them straight is tough.

If and when I decide to use PE again I will deffo invest in a bending/shaping tool!!

So time for my fav part next PAINTING!!!!

Double update tonight.

Got the airbrush out and Got to it.

Used A mix of greys on this to try and get some depth to it not too bad but I deffo need more practice airbrushing

I painted the tyres with Vallejo dark rubber.

Once I do a wash this should stand out a bit more.

Then I want over some of the details a bit of dark metallic on the guns and turret and spade ets.
Then painted the wood handle and rope in a dark brown as a base coat.

Need to do some highlights and then a couple of clear coats before decals!
