revell 1:72 Handley Page Halifax mkI/II grII

Post by MarkVerploeg »

so here is my entry for the 100 years of bombers group build
ther are several versions you can build using this kit
and i choose to build the mk.II version with the gunner position on the nose instead of the glass dome on the nose of the gr.II version
the version i'm going for is the one on the boxart
but i will toss in a bit of the planes history in the next update as i don't have it at the moment

here is the kit
Image
the box art
i think it looks cool and loking at it i get the idea the american liberators are somewhat based on this aircraft
but i'm not sure if that is actually the case

Image
the kit content

Image

Image

Image

Image

all the sprues
the sprues in the first photo are all suplied 2 times as one sprue covers one half of the plane

THE BUILD
i did get building right after opening and taking the sprueshots
and these are the steps i did
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

and this is what i got so far
Image

Image

Image

i keep the small parts on sticks for painting
as i find this easyer and these parts have multiple colors or different colors then the parts the go on

after i did this i was going to the next step of the build wich is the fuselage halfs
Image
this ask for some small holes to be made but after a look at the parts i found a bucketload of pinmarks so it was out with the putty and fill them
Image
and this is where i left off
it takes about a day to dry and after that i will sand it down and paint the interior so i can continue this build

and that is all for now
i'll keep you updated on the progress
cheers Mark

Nice kit. I built this same kit about 2 years ago and was very impressed with how it went together, no fit issues that I remember. I decided to go with the coastal command colours on mine as I thought the white colour really looked impressive. Best of luck with your build.

Post by MarkVerploeg »

and here i have the first update on my Halifax build
and as promised i have a bit of history on this early war bomber

specifications on the mkII version
crew : 7
lenght : 21,36 meter
wingspan : 30,12 meter
wingsurface : 111,48 square meters
weight empty : 16.320 kg
weight max : 24.950 kg
cruising speed: 325 kmh
speed max : about 440 kmh
payload : 5897 kg max.
engine power : 1390 bhp per engine
protection:
2 browning 7,7 mm machineguns in the nose
4 browning 7,7 mm machineguns in the tail
2 browning 7,7 mm machineguns on the back
2 7,7 mm vickers k machineguns in the side portholes

in the Original design that was made by the handley page design team lead by George Volkert
the bomber was equipt with 2 rolls royce vulture engines this was in 1935
but the RAF asked for more power and use of parts that where lready in use with the armed forces
on that note they decided to use the rolls royce merlin engines
this ofcource is the infamous 27.000 cc supercharged V 12 engine that is regarded as the best engine of the second world war
also they upgraded from 2 to 4 engines
the production of the Halifax started in 1940 and at the end of production they build a total of about 6.100 units
the Halifax was used by Polish, free French,Canadian,Australian and New Zealand squadrons operating in the Royal Air Force
in UK use they where operated by the RAF and the Costal Command

and this is how the build is coming along

Image
after the last post i started painting the interior the colors are my own mixes as i use tamiya paints and the kit only shows revell offerings
for the green i used a 70/30 mix of dark green and dark yellow
for the grey i used 70/30 mix of panzer grey and black this also could be 60/40
i mixed by eye and did not really messure the mixes
the details are painted with Vallejo colors conform the given colors
after this was dry i applied some dark wash by mig productions
after that was cleaned up i dry brushed the control panels using some gun metal from Vallejo

Image

Image
i did not really liked the decal for the pilots instrument panel i left it of and decided to go with just the dry brushing

Image
the test fitting of the fuselage

Image
the landing gear bays ready made for later use

Image
a second test fit at this point the fuselage and wings are glued but not to eachother

after this i went on with the construction of the wings as there are a lot of smaller parts on the engines and wing tips
Image

Image
a close up on the engines
the engine parts have one down side and that is that they are easy to get miss alined and you end up with a big seem line

after that i placed the the air intakes and exhausts
Image
the steering sufaces are also added wich are still moveable

and some inside views of the landing gear bays
Image

Image

i did not post all the building instructions in this thread as there are 99 building steps and almost all just let you work about 3 parts
so i decided that such a action would be kind of boring to see

and that is where i'm at right now
so if you have questions, comments or tips and tricks
don't hold them back and share them
as i did not build a plane in some 5 or 6 years this is a big learning process
so i hope you like it and until next time
cheers Mark

well i think it is time for a update
and this is what i have done untill now

at the point where i left off last time there was still some building of major parts like these
Image
the nice thing is the steering surface are workable after you glue the wing to the fuselage

Image
here it is in place

Image
here the building of the bomber is almost done and all the parts are on the fuselage and wings
the parts that are missing at this the props and the glass but they are beeing masked
wich as a armor builder don't really enjoy because normally i don't have big clear parts so i don't mask things

Image
bit of a close up of the wing

Image
the props ready for paint

Image
some pre shading also something i normally don't do
so it doesn't look very nice as i found out it is pretty hard to make a free hand straight line with a airbrush

Image
and this is the bottom color the instructions state that you have to use revell's tar black but i used tamiya flat black and panzer grey for this
and i mixed this in a 90 to 10 ratio to make it a bit dull or pale if you will

and that is where i'm at right now
this kit goes together pretty fast and looks ok i think altough there probably will be better kits on either this subject and other planes
so i hope you like it
and untill next time

Cracking build so far mate, I know what you mean about the pre-shading, I don't normally do it, when I have tried in the past it didn't go to well :wall:

Going to give it a shot on my Valiant, I bet I doesn't look as good as yours :thumb2:

there are a lot of small things you have to do on a plane
i didn't realize that and thought it would be a bit more easy to build a plane (as i build armor most of the time)
but when this is done i just might go for a second entry but in a bigger scale
because this masking it really drives me crazy but it is doneand the carpetmonster has eaten my antanna support and a pitot tube on this one as it is all so small so i hope a bigger scale solves that and it should be a bit easyer to work on as i learned quite a bit from this build like the do's and don'ts but i will get the bigger one only if i think the price is right as they cost a lot and i want good value for my cash
but we will see this one is not done yet

you could do that this kit was not that expensive,i believe about 25 euro and it goes together pretty fast without any big fit issues
the only thing to look out for is the parts that hold the engines they are a biy harder to do but that is.all
there is a lot of masking though with all those small windows on the gunners positions

hi guys
i'm back with my new update on the Halifax build

i have most of the building behind me and paint is done completly
i still need to place the 2 teardrop windows on the sides and the lights on the wingtips
so here is what i've been up to

Image
the main colors and camo
i'm sorry for lacking to make a picture of the build when it was in the masking tape
the brown was made with a mix of tamiya flat earth and red brown in a 30/50 ratio
the green is tamiya dark green wich is only thinned for spraying
as you can see the paint is damaged in several spots
this was my own fault as i had very little primer left and made the rather stupid decicion of thinning the primer (Vallejo's offering wich was decanted from the spraycan)
this has the result that the paintlayer wich is very thin aswell was very fragile

Image
over here i masked of the edges of the wings for the yellow edge it will recieve
this has to be done on both the up and down side of the wings

Image
in this pic i painted the insides of the bombbay and wheelwells
after it was dry i masked them off so i can fix the damaged paint on the underside of the wings and hull
also the masking for the yellow is removed

Image
the patched up lower parts

Image
the painted gunner positions
the masking of these parts was a lot of work with all those small windows

Image
the patched up upper side

Image
the antenna cables wich go from the front to the back
these are made with streched sprue and then are painted with Vallejo black
it also received a clear coat so i can't damage the paint any more

i made my fair share of mistakes so far and i was expecting that i would
but she is ready for the decals at the moment
so i'll see when i start that and she could use a couple of washes and some rust for the exhaust
and that is all i have for now
so i hope you like it and if you have any comments, questions or anything of the kind just shoot away
and i'll reply as soon as possible
cheers Mark

plain and dumb luck as i did the patching with the same paints as for the airbrush but then used a hairy stick so there was no more masking involved
but some in some places it is visible if you lok closely or under the right light
but thanks for the comment
cheers

thank you mr guppy
i will try to continue this build somewhere this week
but i want to finish the interior of the sws first as that is sitting on the bench at the moment
and then i can post a new update on that
and once that is done i get back to the bomber and hopefully finish it sometime soon
but it still needs its decals and i'm not really looking forward to that task because there are quite some that need to go on there
but we will see how things go a long

thanks mate
when you get to the bigger parts it will go fast
and be prepared that you can snap the small parts off very easy
as for the camo i used 40 mm wide masking tape and tahen i copyed the camo with a pencil before i used a knife
this makes it a bit easyer

hello to all
here is my new update on my Halifax build
altough not a very happy one this time
but we'll get to that later
lasty time the Halifax was ready for the decals
so that is what i started this time

Image
a bit of nose art allthough a bit unclear here
it resembles a train with bombs and the tekst Ruhr valley express a bit of humor from back in the day i guess

Image
a view of the entire plane with the decals
something went wrong on the clear coat i think since the decals moved to easy and won't make full contact so i had a lt of silvering wich doesn't go a way even with micro sol and set
but i did managed to get it back to a minimum

Image
then it was time for a wash i used mig dark wash on top and nutral wash on the lower part
this was then mostly removed with ak odourless thinner

this is the result after cleaning of the wash
Image

and then it was time for the matt varnish and then this was the result
Image
it seems that there was a chemical reaction since the entire surface of the wing turned white when it dried and when i removed the white powderlike coat that was on the wing this was what was left
so after about 10 minutes of very bad words and a near mental meltdown i put this aside
i think this is able to be restored but it will take some effort and probably some more cursing
i also tossed the clear i had in the bin since this is not the result i want
because my plane looks like the terminator with half it's face blown off
but there is nothing i can do about it now
so this is all i have for now
cheers Mark

could be an idea but i'm going to try and fix it
it means i have to mask off a lot again but i think it will be worth the effort
and i'm going to set it aside for a couple of days just to clear my head a bit
and then i'll give it another go

johnsons clear for a gloss coat and tamiya flat
it was kind of spooky to see it dry and turn white but it won't happen again
i tossed them in the bin after i tested it again on a blanc piece of styrene
and i think it's the thinner that caused it but i'm not sure

Tamiya flat isn't a clear coat, it's to add to paint to make it flatter, that's why it dried white.

Everyone has made the mistake of using tamiya flat as a clear coat as it's not as Paul said. I think it's tamiya x-86 that's the matt coat. Even though it's x and not xf i think it's still matt.
