Tamiya 1/35 M41 Walker Bulldog

Post by RobertA »

I fancied building something a bit larger than 1/72 armour, just for once.. and this kit has been a dream to build, so far.. Started it yesterday and it virtually built itself! The build is totally OOB with nothing added... :apc:

It is, isn't it?? :) Thanks for leaving a comment, Michael.. I'm glad somebody did!!! ;):

Further progress, as follows:

Testfitting the turret on to the fuselag.. erh, hull...
Image

Pilot.. erh, tank commander assembled and primed with Citadel Skull White rattle can primer..
Image

...and painting started, using LifeColor acrylic and Citadel acrylic paints..
Image

Unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of the painted tank, but here is the decalling started, anyway..
Image

...and I painted and weathered the tracks as well, using the eminent stuff from the Ultimate range..
Image

While all that was going on I also decided to make up a base of sorts, using a MDF board cut to shape by a friend of mine, dousing it down with PVA glue and applying some woodfiller..
Image

It should all hopefully resemble a muddy ground when done, with partly wet and partly dried out mud, but we'll see about that when it's finished.. I have little faith in my own abilities! You can get away with murder in 1/72 scale, but 1/35 is different..
Image

And that is it.. for now.. Thank you again to anyone who just happens to stumble upon this post and decides to honour me with a comment.. :D

Hmm... It's not a plane... It's not.. small?! :wtf: :eeek: :eeek:

Hahaha, looking good sir :)

I brush painted several 1/35 kits before I got an airbrush, it was a nightmare for me .. With your skills you will do this tank justice :)

Thank you. I'm so tempted to get an airbrush... but have nowhere to use it!

When I win a squadrillion £££'s on the lottery I will buy a big enough house to allow myself a proper hobby room where I can use an airbrush and dremel tool and similar devices without disturbing anybody else.. :bash: As it is now I have to sit in the livingroom and it is not the best of solutions, as I either disturbe my wife when she is watching the Tv, or she disturbs me and I can't concentrate on the build.. :violin:

But that's life, I guess.. :ooops:

Thank you very much! A few more days, and it should be done.. My holiday is over and I'm off to work in a minute.. sigh.. Had I had another couple of days off it might even had been done by tomorrow, but that's not very likely now.. :)

Thanks again, Gents.. :) It is a very enjoyable build indeed, and quick.. even though now I'm back at work my pace of build has gone back to 'slow' again.. but some progress has been made this morning, as will be shown below..

I do use woodfiller quite a lot on my bases, but it's easier for 1/72 scale, if only due to the fact that you need a lot less as the bases are smaller.. still, it dried overnight and has been painted up in 'Dark Earth' now, and over sprayed in patches with Citadel 'Chaos Black', quite effective if I say so myself..

A 'tree' has also been planted, it is supposed to look slightly charred but I overdid the spray so will touch it up with some paint later, to hopefully make it a tad better looking and not quite so black.. :thumb2:

Filler painted brown, grassflock added and a tree planted, sprayed black to symbolise being burnt..
Image

Tank in place, but not fixed.. it is pending further weathering work. I also hope to make it look as if it has sunken slightly into the soil / mud..
Image

Hope to make further progress tomorrow.. :) Thanks again for following..

Phew! For a moment there I thought my whole universe had gone off-kilter; Rob building armour and using an airbrush. One I can handle, but both! :eeek: Anyways, you're so darn good with the hairy-stick, I can't tell the difference anyway.

Great looking Bulldog and the base looks really nice - will have to investigate the old wood filler. I've just built this model myself and thoroughly enjoyed it; lost my mojo with a SiG and decided I needed a quick distraction. I won't bomb your thread, but might chuck up a couple of pics.

Looks smashing. I'm with you on the lottery win to avoid annoying the missus. I've got a cheap airbrush and compressor (oh the noise). She's started watching tv with the subtitles on! Doh.

Ha ha ha ha ha... :) Can't blame her.. but yes, if I ever do win the lottery, a hobby room (man cave) would be a priority.. :)

And by all means, Coen.. bomb away.. would love to see it!! :)

Thanks again for the tip with the wood filler Rob, I ordered some last night and will have a play around with it once it arrives! :th:

I've posted up some pics of my Bulldog, but apologies I'm not Coen as they would tons better if I was!

So unfortunately you'll have to make do with my fumbling attempt which resembles the efforts of someone trying to decorate their hallway but through the mailbox in the front door and with boxing gloves on!

Lets just say, the job gets done, but it aint pretty!!!

Thanks again Gentlemen all.. and sorry Alex.. got confused! I work nights and the first thing affected is your mind, apparently.. ;) Will have a good look later, at your Bulldog..
:D
Fell asleep in my breakfast bowl this morning so no further progress as yet on the tank / vignette. Guess it won't get harmed from being left for a day.. :P

A bit more work has been carried out on the tank over the last couple of days.. it is now near completion.. :)

As Tamiya didn't provide any clear parts or otherwise for the drivers 'windows' I decided to use PVA glue to fill the open holes, as I seriously doubt that any tank would have an area left open like that:
Image

To avoid the glue pooling at the bottom I turned the tank upside down after a couple of minutes..
Image

..and this is how it ended up after drying. The 'windows' has since been painted..
Image

I decided to add a bit more interest to the vignette...
Image

..and I have also done a bit more work on the tank commander. I now call him 'done'.. :)
Image

Image

All that's left now is some minor detailing and such like, I should hopefully have it all done within the next couple of days.. :)

Thanks for watching, much appreciated..
