Spitfire Mk.IIa, Messerschmitt BF109E-4 or P-51D Mustang?

Post by UKguyInUSA »

Guys, I'm just wondering what everyone else's views are regarding their most favorite choice of plane to model if they had a choice of either a Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IIa, a Messerschmitt BF109E-4, or a P-51D Mustang? And, out of the three aircraft, which is their most favorite and why?!

I love all three aircraft, so it makes for an extremely difficult choice to choose one, although the Spitfire was first with the Rolls Royce Merlin engines and the P-51D Mustang adopted them.....hmmm?!

Cheers,

Martin

I like that reasoning! The Spit surely is a beautiful airplane that has a timeless design that stirs the emotions.

Well... being British i'd have to go with the spit for three reasons:
1. It's probably one of the best looking aircraft of all time imo, it's curves are beautiful
2. At airshows the engines sound so nice
3. Most iconic prop plane ever tbh

That said I do love the me109 and the p51 but id probably go with me109 next as I prefer the camo

I think I have to agree to everything that you state here...the sound of those Merlin's is memorable, and I too love the Luftwaffe Camo schemes and colors.

Yeah, those yanks did upgrade the engine to make it the most formidable fighter of WW.II by adding the Supercharger.

Reminds me of this quote from the P51 wiki page
"Chief Naval Test Pilot and C.O. Captured Enemy Aircraft Flight Capt. Eric Brown, CBE, DSC, AFC, RN, tested the Mustang at RAE Farnborough in March 1944, and noted, "The Mustang was a good fighter and the best escort due to its incredible range, make no mistake about it. It was also the best American dogfighter. But the laminar flow wing fitted to the Mustang could be a little tricky. It could not by no means out-turn a Spitfire [sic]. No way. It had a good rate-of-roll, better than the Spitfire, so I would say the plusses to the Spitfire and the Mustang just about equate. If I were in a dogfight, I'd prefer to be flying the Spitfire. The problem was I wouldn't like to be in a dogfight near Berlin, because I could never get home to Britain in a Spitfire!"

Thanks for sharing that quote, I've never read that before and it makes some poignant statements to contemplate.

The Hurricane is a nice plane, and sadly doesn't get recognized like the Spitfire for putting the Battle into the "Battle of Britain" shooting down more enemy fighters than the Spits, in fact they accounted for 60% of the "kills"!

P-51D! The Mustang is and has been the most iconic fighter plane ever built, IMHO. Helped win the war! And even though I LOVE radials, the Packard-Merlin or Rolls Royce engine of the Mustang have no sound equal to them.

Plus, it looks sexy!!

The P51 looks amazing in NMF and yes it does sound amazing. But come on guys the most iconic fighter bar none, it is the SPITFIRE every time especially for those of us from UNION JACK land IMHO.

Without a doubt it the spitfire, best looking by a country mile. Market is flooded with german kits including 109, and p-51 was pretty poor til it got merlin engines! Maybe it's just me, but I don't get the fascination with p-51, could be that there are more surviving examples out there? Same goes for b-17s, but that's just my two pennoth!

The P-51's look more like show planes rather than war-planes, with their shiny bare metal surfaces and bright colored spinners, noses, wing tips and rudders when compared to the three color camo-schemes of the spits.

Spit for me Martin, the 109 was proberly the better of the two and the P51 better firepower and range but the old Spitfire was the only aircraft to be produced/developed through out the war.

They weren't shiny during service, they need to be kept polished to maintain that shine, in service they would have been faded dull looking aircraft.

That's true, and with each new mark that was released there were improvements, and without the British designed RR Merlin, the P-51 wouldn't have been as awesome as it was.

All great planes each had strengths and weaknesses. The big advantages were in the way they were deployed, the tactics used and the training given. I think any of them in the hands of an experienced pilot would win an encounter in any of the others in the hands of a novice.
