Hi guys I'm about to start this model and thought I'd add the challenge of trying to do a build thread

I won't do an in box review as lee as already done a perfect job (see below)

This is quite a special build for me as its the tank I served in for seven years. I'm hoping to replicate my challenger ( named destroyer ) that I went to the first gulf war in back in 91 below are the only 3 pictures I have of her.

I was with the 14/20th kings hussars and D Squadron leaders driver

My vehicle is the one marked OB in the middle ground I have still to recall why my rear bazooka plate is missing I have contacted my gunner to see if he can recollect what happened to it. I hope to provide pictures and maybe some video updates.

Great pics! I'm doing my 432 from op telic. Pity we didn't have digital cameras issued, we'd have loads of reference shots then! Good luck with the build mate.

I once tried stretching rubber track,s with a hair dryer, I set up a piece of 2 x1timber with hole,s drilled slightly longer than the width of the track,s, then it,s just a case of heating the track,s and stretching them across to the dowel,s until you get the desired size you want. It take,s a while but it does work, hope it help,s cheer,s and best of luck with the build.

Just watched your vids russ. You mentioned glueing after painting and using super glue. If you're glueing parts that have been painted you can just scrape off the paint at the attachment points. This lets you join plastic to plastic. You do have to be careful not to let the glue run all over the painted area though! Which brings me to superglue. I usually squirt a small blob onto some card or the like, then use a cocktail stick to apply a small amount where required. Simple, no fuss, no mess (he lies, after putting his elbow on said piece of card!)
That's just how I do it anyway, hope it helps.

Hello guys thanks for the encouraging comments no building tonight just thought I'd show a few pic of the only two fiddly bits so far

the pics below show the poorly fitting guide rollers which need a bit of care and the tiny nut and bolt for attaching the track adjusting wheels I found a tiny drop of glue on the nut made the fitting a lot less fiddly

Just watched the video and the challenger looks very nice. Good work thinking outside the box to create the non stick coating, not sure I've seen that done before. If you are airbrushing i would recommend leaving the tools off till the end otherwise you can paint around them.

Hey Russ, great looking build so far and on a great subject as well (I have one nearly completed in 1/72 but the nato version) will watch with interest to see how this one goes (great idea on creating the non-slip surfaces, I have heard of people using terracotta paint but as yet haven't managed to locate any here in oz, so will have to keep your idea in the back of my mind)

A little update for you

the build is more or less finished, still waiting on a workable track, it's far to hot in the flat to even think about painting yet so pretty much on hold at the mo. the stowage bins and cam net basket are filled with modelling clay which will be painted to represent stowage covers

Very good honest video there mate. And all I will say about your time in the Gulf etc, is thank you. Thanks for going over there so others didn't have too.

Anyway moving on. The Chieftan looks great buddy, as does the base its on.

The Chally is coming on nicely as well. I am definitely going to be putting the anti-slip surface on my Chally 2 when I get round to building her. So its just putting some thin cement on then roughing it up with a stiff brush yeah?

I have painted the hull tamiya desert yellow xf59 but I think it's too dark I have tried tamiya buff xf57 and it appears too much like the American colour I'vee even tried yellow green xf4 ..... Any advice will be appreciated

so tonight started the diorama. I hoping to represent the night we entered Iraq and show my chally going through a tank berm breeched by the engineers I've used a mix of florist base and clay to keep the weight down

Going through the burm is an epic thing to replicate!! As soon as anybody sees it, they're gonna know what that tank is doing and where it is. Tanks for depicting it.

Working with that floral foam is messy but it sculpts really well.
I'm guessing that you didn't care much for the folks in that picture then?.

Vallejo Dark or Iraqi Sand might be more what you are after. Although Dark Sand is quite a bright colour, but Iraqi Sand might work.

I have Vallejo Model Air Desert Yellow, but its going to be too dark for what you want there I think.

If one shade is a bit too dark, and another a bit too light, either mix the two, or you could use the darker one and then the lighter one on the upper panels etc. So overall you get more the shade you want, combined with some colour variation.

Although in real life its often hard to see any colour variation isn't it as the entire tank is just the same flat colour. But on a model that often looks a bit daft, so yeah use both to create some subtle highlighting and shading, whilst getting the overall tone you want.
