paints

Post by alecras234 »

Hi i have a 1/72 hurricane hobbyboss model and id like to know which acrylic paint is good for being brushed on?? i bought the 1 of Vallejo Model Air Set - WWII RAF Day Fighters (x8 Colours) but its too thin, i tried the humbrol acrylic aswel as but that went on too thick. i dont use an airbrush, i prefer to brush paint acrylics.

Goldilocks paint! Vallejo model AIR is meant to be airbrushed, I think you need Vallejo model Colour for brush work.
Some days it's not even worth chewing through the restraints!

Try the HUMBROL website. The paints are really good with the hairy stick. No good with the air brush though. http://Www.humbrol.com

Just thin them a little with water and you be fine. Good flat brush

When you use any paint ALWYS remember to thin the paint. No paint will go on your model well without thinning to some degree, Humbrol more than others...lol
Where does all the bloody time go.....?

If you go to the vallejo site
You find the pdf of the model color series that is better for brushing
This way you can compare the names from the day fighter set you have to the model color version
They are the same colors but not ready for an airbrush
But like Lee says they could be thinned a little
This can be done with either water or my choise is the vallejo airbrush thinner
A big bottle but it lasts a long time or Ultimate thinner but i haven't used that yet
So my advice is model color by vallejo
Hope this helps
Cheers Mark

I don't think they are sold.in packs so you need to search the paints your self
That is why you need the reference chart
You can search them by name on there

BS381C.641 Dark Green = Humbrol 163
BS381C.638 Dark Sea Grey = Humbrol 164
BS381C.627 Light Aircraft Grey = Humbrol 166

BS381C.637 Medium sea Grey= Humbrol 165
BS4800.118.21 Barley Grey = Humbrol 167
BS381C.627 Light Aircraft Grey = Humbrol 166

Just type the humbrol number you need into amazon, eBay etc.
If it looks right, it is right.

I think both are close, but if it was me I would go with 163.

The BS number is the code used for British standards so you need to convert it to the eqivalent in hobby paints. If you go to the Amazon website and type in 'Humbrol' followed by the numbers that benc123 has given you i.e. 'Humbrol 163' this should give you the paints you need.

Here is a useful Vallejo RAF paint guide that I've uploaded to DropBox (as it's too large to upload on the ISM forum); https://www.dropbox.com/s/6we53msac8xt4 ... 20Info.pdf

Download this and take a look, it is a really good resource and cover the history of RAF colours (eg: what was used and when), along with colour matching these to the Vallajo range. It is generally aimed at Vallejo Air paints, though you can convert these across to the Vallejo Model paint range easily enough.

Hope this helps,

Simon

hi, frustrating as it maybe choosing what paints to use can be tricky what i did was to buy 3 or 4 basic colours from different companies and tried them out with and with out thinners and picked the one that i felt comfortable with ,iam no expert but it helped me :thumb1:
