Beautiful work. Hopefully with those reference pics the resin will fall into place and look awesome.
Even as a base kit, without the extras it looks like a great buy. The extras just take it to the next level.

wow this an amazing build. so much details. and a great subject. details are well above my pay grade !

Far too good for me and what I'm able to do ! and you're pretty good with all the PE and resin. Because alhought I do love the details they always add to a model, I think CA glue is a pain to work with !
Keep on with the good work. It's really and interesting thread to follow.

Nothing much to report at the moment as the additional bits I ordered for the cab haven't shown up yet (should have been here yesterday but now scheduled for Monday). So I've given the engineering team the weekend off.
Buuuuut this did turn up

so it looks like the permanent way gang might have something to do tomorrow

T- Model produces a track that you can curve.
https://www.scalemates.com/kits/t-model ... l--1221712
I reckon using this it would be possible to produce a turn out.
Plus Miniart do the rail lighting, power poles and pedestrian bridges.....it's a huge rabbit hole.

Tomcat's 1/35 Trumpeter BR86 Dampflokomotive - Build Part X

by Tomcat64
Ok - this has slowed down a little over the last couple of weeks but hopefully I can get it back on the rails soon...
The Eduard cab set turned up and I made a start installing the PE plate work.
Obviously this was designed to be fitted to the panels before they were assembled but I'm having a go at a retrofit - what could possibly go wrong...
So in this shot I've added the floor (had to warp the PE slightly to get it around the firebox). Also the panel for the front wall has been cut into three parts as there was no way I was going to get that in place in one go... oh and the original window frames were sanded out before adding those two panels
So next question - could I tidily clip off the pipes and then slide the centre plate into place without completely screwing everything up before connecting them back up again?
Yep - more or less
So that was enough faffing about with PE for one session so I switched over to building the buffer stop... here are the instructions
And the relevant parts
And aside from the usual & expected sanding of mould lines that you always seem to get on Miniart kits it went together pretty well
Finally my brother was kind enough to sand down an MDF plinth for this, but when I gave him the measurements I hadn't ordered the buffer stop... so would it all fit?
Just
I'll rearrange the sleepers to get a sleeper at each end and then look at securing things to the base - the sleepers & rails from the Miniart box are slightly smaller than the Trumpy ones so I'm going to use the kit rails for the track and use the Miniart ones for scenery.
Oh and there's still space on the plinth for a dirt track so I'll be adding a couple of figs & a small vehicle to provide the sense of scale for the finished item - I have a couple of Kettenkrads in the stash that would probably do the trick
Finally we went out to play with the full sized railway again at the weekend - it was a bit...errrr... damp
That's all for now - thanks as always for looking

This is coming together so nice.
There are many different styles of bumper stop. Do you know where each type is used...cause I have no idea and I have 2 a concrete one and that Miniart one you have ?
Not knowing what the Eduard update consists of I thought I would share what the Voyager drivers Cab for the Br52 looks like.
Around 6 months work I estimate.

Yep sorry - realised when I came to make that last post I hadn't taken any photos of the Eduard set so here it is - just the four sheets of PE and a bit of acetate for this one
Regarding the buffer stops I don't really know to be honest, I guess it depended on what resources were available. The Miniart one is made up of bits of rail welded & bolted together with a couple of wooden beams. My guess would be that the concrete type ones would be more likely in munitions dumps or industrial areas but it really is just guessing.

The PE is a little warped & messy in places where I've had to wedge it in but I think it'll look ok once I've smothered it in paint

Well that's stunning - mine is going back in the box now!
I think the Hobbyboss kits are a direct scale down from the Trumpy ones as they have the exact same three locos available in 1/72 as Trumpy in 1/35.
I'd love to build the BR52 so I'll probably pick up the 1/72 version just due to lack of display space!

Still on the slow line with this one but I have made a little progress with PE & resin bits.
Is it just me that can spend a whole afternoon at the bench swearing at PE and then look at my progress at the end of the day and think I've not done much!
Anyway - here's a couple of photos from the past week or so. One thing I'll be upfront about here is that I've bodged this together as best I can from the references I've got available so this should in no way be taken as accurate - more of a "representation" really and should hopefully give the right effect through the windows once it's all together
PE continued to be bent and "encouraged" into place... as you can see I've also added some cabling to be attached to some fiddly bits later on and I decided to add the glazing for the windows as I went along using the PE frames as a guide for cutting the masks.
And here are the aforementioned fiddly bits installed & cabled up - I needed to scratch build a small panel to attach some of them to.
So I think I've crammed as much in here as I can - I do have a couple of sliding window panels to build but they'll be installed once they're painted
I then thought I'd make a start on the rear wall of the cab but promptly lost a couple of parts to the carpet monster so decided that was a sign to finish for the day! I did finally track the missing bits down later so it looks like the carpet monster prefers styrene to PE
Finally I did some work on the base last week - the sleeper sections are glued in place, I've added some kerbing and then a layer of vallejo textured earth paint to make a start on the track.
This has subsequently received a coat of Tamiya primer from a rattle can as it's too big to fit in the spray booth.
That's all for now - thanks as always for checking in

I'm going to build mine one day super tricked out. I have a tonne of PE and resin to spruce it up. However at the moment as it is a prized build to do I want to up my skills a bit first. No it will happen I assure you.

Just a couple more notes for you in case you face a similar challenge when you get to your cab:
I think the "thingy" that those wheel valves are attached to should replace the block that they're glued to... maybe...
Also I spotted later that the three cables should actually run up the front wall rather than just being buried out of the way in the corner like I've done it.
Ok and the grease pump (square block thingy on the boiler) should have a mounting tray arrangement, but again didn't spot that until after I'd decided to apply lashings of CA to attach it to the front of the firebox.

Fantastic
PE is such a fickle temptress.
Can be spectacular and easy to apply or completely unyielding and not participate in fitting in any way shape or form.
It also likes to fly away and hide never to be found
When searching on the floor, I often ask the part β do you want to stay down here in the dark or do you want to be on the modelβ
Sometimes the bit will then just jump into my sight

I'll give your search technique a go next time a teeny bit goes overboard!

For the PE in this build I've used PVA where I can as it's a little more forgiving, but for the smaller parts I've had to resort to CA - in this case I've used Deluxe Materials CA Gel as it does give a little more time to work before setting hard.

Welcome to another episode of "Swearing with PE"
This week I tackled the bunker and started off by carefully removing the doors & handrails to make access to the bulkhead easier. Thankfully I got away with that without any noticeable damage and then removed the bunker door and cut & sanded off the necessary raised detail. And then took an out of focus pic
The main PE plates were added, and the new bunker doors fitted in place.
Then built up the additional details over a couple of sessions - the bunker doors look a little messy where the CA hasn't behaved but I think it'll look ok once it's under paint
So with the bunker done, that just leaves the cab roof to get some PE attention this week.
In amongst this I also deployed my neglected airbrush and sprayed some Ultimate black primer on the chassis & running gear. The good news is that this assembly does just fit in the spray booth on a turntable with a couple of mm clearance at each end. I've done a couple of coats so far, one from the top & one from the bottom to try and get everything covered. I'll let that dry off properly and then do a visual check & correction to any areas I've missed.
Finally for this update we went out on Saturday evening and captured this on the mainline about 15 mins from home. For those interested in the details the locomotive is "Clan Line", a 4-6-2 Southern Region "Merchant Navy" class built in 1948.
Thanks as always for looking

PE can be a right pain at times

I switched to soldering a lot of parts rather than CA. Once you get the hang of it it's much better than CA especially edge to edge seems e.g. mudguards. You do need a quality iron and solder, once mastered it's cleaner, far stronger and you can release any part simply by reheating

Cheers mate - this might be a case of being separated by a common language but for me the firebox is the bit at the end of the boiler at the front of the cab:
And what I've been referring to as the "bunker" is the bit at the back which holds the coal at the rear of the cab (so the equivalent of the tender on the BR52)
And yep being able to leave the boiler off the frames is a major help with painting up the subassemblies - it might cause a few mini-headaches & touch-ups when I bolt it all together but definitely think this might be the easier way to go.

Soooooo... I think I finally finished playing with PE & Resin bits on this build
Here's the interior of the roof panel with the last of the Eduard PE kit in place and another bit of cabling added for the light
With that done I started priming... and then realised that someone had forgotten to add a couple of final details
Must have been the cat... she's far too casual about all this...
So with that sorted I primed the boiler & cab in stages - after I left this to dry overnight I spotted that I'd missed a couple of areas so I'll fix that this week when I prime the water tanks as well
Cab roof & bunker also covered in Ultimate black
And since the running gear was primed last week that got a couple of coats of Vallejo Model Air Anthracite grey - this still needs a couple more coats to complete coverage (mainly underneath)
And then yesterday I made some more progress on the base; the sleepers were base coated with old wood and then given black washes to age them a bit, the trackway was treated to a mix of MIG pigments and sealed with some thin PVA, and the kerbing was picked out in rubber grey.
Next will be adding the ballast and sorting out the rails to the base and continuing to base coat the loco.
Thanks as always for looking

Beautiful priming.
I love the PE in the roof panel. It looks so RIGHT!
You know like when you see part of a kit and it just looks the business. Superb work.

This is a hell of a build!! So much so that it
almost tempts me to have a go at a steam loco!

It really is an impressive piece of work - especially the PE and resin detailing.

Love smooth primer there Neil, good enough to leave as top coat and just weather it
Tracks are looking good
