You might want to check http://www.aviationmegastore.com in that case they have a absolutely massive decal section. Their search capabilities are a bit crap on the site but you can't win the all of the time

Scott some liquid decal film from micro scale might be able to help you out on the old decals. A thin layer over the decals often prevents them from shattering when they come in contact with water.

My mate said 'you must build a Phantom' so I'm in. Expect nothing short of a shambles as I'm a returnee to the hobby with dubious previous experience - oh, and I'm learning to airbrush as I go!

I'll plump for 1/48th scale which means Hasegawa (unless advice to the contrary) and must confess I do like the RF versions. Specific scheme still to be decided but I'll let you know.

Now looking into options to kick it up a level.

Little worried my 1/72nds are gonna look miniscule compared to the majestic 1/48 and massive 1/32nds

Jason, even the kids snap together kits are or will be allowed to enter. It's about paying hommage to the F-4 and have fun building the model.

I don't think I need to point out that pre-painted snap kits will not be in the winners circle at the end

Thankfully it's not THAT beginner of a beginner kit. It's just 80% a snapper. Which had me pretty upset. Amazon was chill, though. I got to be responsible for the shuttering of a scammy online store and they gave me the credit back. So that's a win.

It was only $10 USD anyway...which should have been a red flag for me. I was just excited to see what I thought was a 1/72 version of the Academy 1/48.

It's still an Academy F-4J, and it will need painting.

Basically free. I was thinking I was getting a 1/72 VF-84 Jolly Rogers and not the VF-96 that the kit really is, though...so I might seek out some aftermarket decals to right that little injustice.

Nothing against the VF-96, in fact it's a great scheme, just I want to build what I thought I'd be building

1:72 VF-84 F-4 Decals should be available. I think Microscale does a set if I remember correctly.

Talking about replica kits. I picked up a ACDA copy of the Verlinden Production #84 airfield beacon lights on Ebay the other week. The Verlinden Logo, Art and Font are still on the packaging to talk about nerve. But since the Verlinden set has been out of production for some time now. It was the only semi affordable option out there at the time

I intimated my interest in a Phantom build previously and have now decided on the kit at least. I do like the nose shape of the RF versions so have plumped for this kit:

Well I've decided to build this as a D model in an unusual colour scheme for a spook as I've only been able to find 1 photo for reference. I even wrote to the USAF liaison office but I've had no reply yet but I'm not really expecting one.
As for af I've a nice box full just waiting on a sheet of stencil data then I'm ready to go.
I've been like a kid in a sweet shop getting this little lot

This is what I know so far it's an f4d 66-7751, 93rd tfs, 482nd tfw, USAF reserve homestead AFB circa 1984. They called the camo flipper for some strange reason. I only have the 1 picture in all my reference material. I've been all over the web since I decided this is what I was going to build so far I've found nothing new. Any help would be great thanks.

I have had a quick look on http://www.airliners.net and did a quick google search. The "flipper"camouflage was the same scheme as used by the Egyptian Air Force. Its a three tone gray scheme I think I have paint numbers and layout for this scheme in my stash. I have also found several decal options in 48th and 32nd scale by Techmod and Hi-Line decals.

Hope this helps you out in the right direction, I have found this color call out at one of my go to online shops hope this is the one you where looking for

Scott, I think it might be that intervention time when you start buying kits from the Evil-Bay "Sales" Spam... Nice bargain although doing PE on 1:72nd scale requires nerves of steel, eye sight of a bald eagle and ice water for blood in my opinion.

If some of the kits turn out to be dogs to build you could always do a nice Davis Monthen Dio you have enough F-4's to make it look convincing

That was a sweet deal from the Bay, sometimes you just gotta jump at 'em. The PE will be a cake walk compared to hand painting the cockpit details like I did on the Tamiya...that was brutal even with surgical microscopes and an LED headlight!

I won't lie, I might have a 1/48 Academy in my cart, just waiting for me to become weak-willed. Maybe some PE, too. I've only just tried some to see what it's like to work with, and now I want more. We'll see if I hold out, my dance card is super full through 2017...

Thanks Paul but it's the same information as I've already got, and I'm using the high-line decals for it.
The colour call out you pm'd me is the same as well. It seems to be really hard to get any information on this particular scheme.

How do you cover the internal wheel wells of the Phantom to paint the exterior??
I masked off the canopy, but how about protecting the white wheel wells???

Hi Scott, for this problem I have found that these products work best: Play Dough, White / Blue Tack, Panzer Putty and White / PVA / Wood glue to hold the internally painted gear doors in place when painting the exterior. On some models the gear doors are oversized for the wheel Wells or are already fixed to the landing gear. In those cases a big blob of the thick stuff mentioned above is enough to cover and protect the area. Don't leave it in place for extended periods, as some products can affect and or ruin the paint job. I have also seen people do the wheel wells and speed brakes after the exterior color has been applied.
