Beautiful pre-shade mate. As for colours, green and grey are good, brown not so much. Most Luftwaffe aircraft at that time were green/grey camo with a light blue underside. Be careful with the colours though, don't go too dark.

Had another look in the paint stash and found the perfect grey to compliment the green. I feel a bit happier now

I just used the rlm listing of the colours for my paint as scheme on the 1:48 version. These where rlm 70 and 71 which are both quite dark, black green and dark green. Have to say, though, with my limited research trying to find pictures of this paint scheme - there where an awful lot of variations on the theme. Looking at your model it definitely represents a totally different plane to the one I'm struggling along with so I would probably ignore any colour choices I make.

Your right nigel, there are so many variations it's hard to keep up. I'm not a hardcore scale buff so i'll just paint it so it's pleasing to the eye. I think by the time the markings, stencils, washes and weathering are done it will look ok.

Really enjoying how you approach the colours. Its good to be accurate but at the end of the day its your kit and you have a picture of how you want it to look in your mind. The fun is getting it to that point.

Got to say, so far Vader would say - Impressive, most impressive.

The pre-shading is not heavy enough for the darker top colours but it's something learned for the next one.

Well it looks like a very clean paint job to me. Wish I'd got one of those canopy masks must remember for my next one as well.

Hey John, I haven't been here for a while....looking good, your further than me now...lol, Think Im going down the post shading route now, I really could not be bothered with the pre to be honest.
I will get some pictures up this week, but yours is definitely coming along nicely.

Nigel, the canopy masks were quite good and they were only about £6 but the set also comes with the masks for the insignia ! Unfortunatly the paint/primer has pulled off in places so i might just use the decals from the kit.

Gaz, i've been at it solid from friday evening, i just need it finished now, that'll be three weeks tommoro ! Please feel free to post your progress i tend to slow up during the week.

gaz, i dont know if i'd do the pre-shading again as i'll need to post shade anyway. The pre-shading took about two hours !

The primer is pulling up all over the place. The whole model was flattened with 800 and i'm as sure as i can be it didnt go on too dry.

masked up for the yellow, i used the tape on the palm of the hand trick to the point that if i sneezed it would all blow off !

It's gonna take enough yellow paint to sink a battle ship to cover the pre-shading......another lesson learned

Yep, I went through a fair bit of yellow on my 1/48 to cover the pre shading, can only imagine on the 1/24. As you say we live and learn.

Yeah, i think i'm going to thicken the paint a bit. I didnt have any XF-3 left so i had to add the flat base to the X-8 and i think i over did it. If you look at it in a certain light it looks like a layer of frost ! Anybody that has overdone it will know what i mean.

I think i'll add another half ml of orange as well to darken it slightly.
Cars and bikes are sssooooo much easier !

I chickened out of having to do any paint mixing and went and bought the Mr Hobby colours. they went on really nicely but the yellow definitely needed a few more coats than the others.

I usually only build tamiya kit's and quite often they call for paint to be mixed so i'm quite familiar with it. I usually mix around 6ml to fit in an empty tamiya jar incase mix comes out again. The one that comes to mind is the grey/semi gloss black for the ducati 1199 that i think i'll use for the prop on the 109.

The mottled effect on the side doesnt really show up that well in the pic but it looks ok in the flesh !

I spent most of yesterday trying to apply the future gloss coat but after many coats it was at best semi gloss and quite patchy, i ended up blasting it with tamiya X-22 and it's still not that glossy as the matt base colour is soaking up paint like a sponge !
The alclad aqua gloss arrived today but i've a funny feeling i cant put the alclad over the tamiya acrylic ? HELP !!!!!

Sorry for not answering questions bit instead along more....

I'm almost upto the gloss coat myself, first one ever and thinking of using already aqua gloss as well. Just wanted to know how you applied it? Was it several thin coats?

By the way the colour scheme is looking great.

Yes, apply a couple of thin coats then leave it & check on it after an hour, apply more coats until your happy.

Again, thank you. The decals are really old, i just hope they're ok.

nige, i used the 0.5 nozzle airbrush. I'm not sure how many coats as it dries very quickly and i just kept going over it untill it was glossy enough.

Yeah, no worries

i have been on a mission trying to get this finished. I do appreciate i probably get more time for this than most with young family, work and other interests.
i've spent this evening applying the decals so hopefully over the weekend i can have it finished 100% at long last !!!!!!

Again looking good John, mines a slightly different colour variation, no yellow tips on mine....I have plenty of evening time, but this has sort given me a lost mo-jo, I will see it through, probably a another 2 weeks will see the back end of it.
I also bought the Airfix Stuka at the same time, that was going to be next, but no way now, back to Tamiya I think to get the mo-jo back I hope.

Yeah, i feel exactly the same. I was in hobby craft today for some bits n pieces and i had my hand on the hurricane but i knew what lay ahead and just couldnt face it again ! Like you, back to tamiya. I still have the mustang, mosquito and lancaster in the pile. I'm planning to get all the tamiya 1/32 aircraft kit's (not every varient though)
The yellow tipped version came with the canopy mask set and just looked a bit different

I.went and bought my first tamoya kit today. A V-1 flying bomb. A grand total of 15 pieces! Love it.

If you're after one, Trumpeter's 1/24 Hurricanes are meant to be light years ahead of the old Airfix kit. I have the IIc (Trop) in the stash and it looks lovely.

I think once you finish the awfull 109 your mo-jo will come storming back. I've been feeling the same and as im all but done with it i already feel better and looking forward to the next. Just the final matt coat and remove the canopy masks and thats it, 100% done WOOHOO !!!!!!!!!

I'm pleased with the end result but glad all that filling and fitting is done with. I'm also glad i didnt bin it, but it came really close a few times. As ever guys, thank you to all who contributed to this thread with help, comments and a voice of reason at times ! Thanks guys
