Update 5

Hello, and welcome again!
Got a lot of work done, so sit back and relax.
Andy, here's some FREE popcorn especially for you mate! ------>

Right.... this kit is a great kit with no flash at all, but I did discovered some sink marks in the fenders, so time to fill them up.
I know it would be barley visible, but I want to do it right.

I forgot to fill two sink marks at the motor compartment, so these will be filled with a drop of liquid putty from Mr hobby.
Great stuff

Then it was time to mask the engine, so I could paint the chassis, wheels and cabin.

Ready for the spray booth!

I sprayed a black primer, and a olive drab primer from Vallejo.
Let it dry for 24 hours, and gave it a olive drab base colour from Vallejo.
All ready finished it off with a matt varnish, because the cabin is coming on and off the chassis many times, this way it will protect the paint from chipping.

The windshield dried up nicely from the clear, and I masked it off for the dust effect I've got planed for this truck.
For the wiper marks, I measured one wiper 1cm and cut a circle of 1cm diameter and cut it in half.
Now I have a mask for the wiper marks.

I'm using this paint from life colour.
Airbrushed it on low pressure, and hold the airbrush a big distance from the windshield.

And here's the result

I need to dust up the truck when it's finished too

I wanted to paint the wire a steel colour, but the supplied wire is getting fluffy.
Small hairs of the wire are very visible, and this looks like no steel cable at all.
So what to do?!

Turning over the model and with Tamiya extra thin glue, made the winch loos again.

I unrolled a piece of wire and cut it off.
I'm replacing the wire for real steel wire.
To save steel wire, I did not remove all cotton wire.

With a thinner steel wire (electrical wire from a old headset) I made the loop for the towing hook.

Primed the wire black, and treated it with old rust pigment from MIG

Added standard rust and light rust pigment, and this is how it turned out.

And while I'm working with rust, treated the exhaust as well.

Getting shape!

Beginning the construction of the flatbed that holds the bofors gun.
It's in two parts, I will start at the front part with the gun lock.

A fast and smooth build.

Yeeeey! Photo Etch bending time!
The holder of the two jerry cans. I will not add the jerry cans now, that will be done as a last step. I want to weather the cans too.

Time to construct the rear

That's fast...

And putting the two together

I masked the clear parts with liquid mask.

Again primed with Black primer and with olive drab primer.
I know a lot of you does not like Vallejo primer, and having a lot of problems with it, but I don't, I love it.

After another 24 hour drying time, I painted the wooden parts with wood colour

Then I sprayed worn effects onto the model.
I do not want it to chip heavily, just to give the wood a bit of worn effect.

Then I sprayed the base colour.

And a dry fit onto the vehicle

With a old brush with the tip cut off I applied water and started to chip the wood.

Just some light chipping, I did not want to heavily chip it.
The steel parts will be chipped by brush later.
The wood is getting a wash later in the progress.

And that's where I stand so far.

Next update I will be building the Bofors gun, and will start at the final construction of the truck and detail painting.

That is quite a big update Frans, some nice tips thrown in and I want to give the windscreen dust effect a go, the copper wire was a master stroke

Update 6

Hello guys!
Thank you for taking the time to drop by again for another update
It's been a while, a lot has happened, so sit back and hold tight for his is going to be a big one...

We will start with the construction of the Bofors gun

Some WIKI

The Bofors 40 mm gun, often referred to simply as the Bofors gun,is a n anti-aircraft/multi-purpose autocannon designed in the 1930s by the Swedish arms manufacturer AB Bofors. It was one of the most popular medium-weight anti-aircraft systems during World War II, used by most of the western Allies as well as by the Axis powers. The cannon remains in service (as the main armament in the CV 90, among other uses) making it both one of the longest-serving and most widespread artillery pieces of all time. Bofors itself has been part of BAE Systems AB since March 2005.

The instructions

First PE part at the gun

Brass barrel added.

PE gun sights added

And build ready...
Fast and easy build, not to much PE.

Time to add the hood.
I want the hood to be open, for I did a lot detailing to the engine, it would be a shame to cover that up.
This kit has a hood, but it's not detailed at the inside.
So I went after market, and bought a open hood.

Hard to take a decent pick of the inside, but it looks great to me

I kinda misted empty ammo shells, so I decided to make my own.
I took this ammo, cut it loose and sanded it round. Drilled a hole in it an tataaa! Shells....

And here's all ready for priming and painting...

While the primer is drying for a couple of hours, I decided to glue all parts together.

Painted a ammo clip that will be in the gun

And here it is in the gun itself.

Time to give he model her first wash...

Applied with a brush,

And after a half hour drying time, I wiped all excess with a damp brush of white spirit and a cotton butt

To give the wood a more used look, I will give it a wash with wood aging solution

Don't be gentle, some stains are good

After that tried up, I applied a brown filter to the model.
Just with a damp brush, no need for another wash method.

Letting it completely dry over 24hrs

Time to upgrade the spare gun barrel for i don't like the moulded canvas on it...

Diluted wood glue, a brush and a piece of paper tissue will do the trick...

Cut the tissue into two pieces

And with the diluted wood glue I wrapped the tissue around the part.

Making sure to have some folds in it

Make sure to let it dry completely.

That's drying, time to pick up the airbrush for the last time.
The white pieces on the front of the truck are going to be airbrushed, for the supplied decals suck.... (no 4)

So masking it all off...

I think this looks better tan slapping those decals on..

For applying the rest of the decals, I applied micro gloss varnish onto the model.
Masked of the wind shied for protection.

And while that's drying, back to the spare gun barrel.
All dried up, and painted in canvas.

Shaded and dry brushed

Time to start chipping the vehicle

Just light, no heavy chipping this time..

Another wash, a heavy one this time.

After drying up, it looks like this.
It's still shinning, but that's because of the gloss varnish.

I'm applying a mat varnish, and At this point I will let it all dry for a couple of days.
This means that I now have time to begin at a dio.

All scratch build. Well... as much as possible anyway..

A sketch of what I have in mind..

A quick dive into the spare box gave me a fence and a French bicycle.

Making a brick wall from foam is easy, making lines with a scalpel

After drawing the bricks with a scalpel, I re-scribe the lines with a tooth pick to make it wider

For creating some damaged bricks, I used glue.
In a well ventilated area, for this is not good for your health..

And this is what you can achieve.

For the column I cut some square pieces.

Glued it all together and cut the big wall out of blue foam too.
I need to sand the column down and straight, and I need to cut away some bricks in the big wall on the right, but that will be seen in the next update, for I think this update is done for now.

With the model added

The truck needs some more...ehhh.... thingies.... I have not decided what, that's the reason I started the dio.
Got several plans, brainstorming all day long

Well , I was entertained a lot in the last half hour checking your thread of this fantastic build ...the vehicle is a top build , all the detail is superb , and I like a lot your diorama idea and all the scratch build doing it , it is just great ! to follow the next update

Update 7

Hello again!

This update I will show you some more work that I have done at the scratch build park wall.

I will start with the column that needed more sculpting and sanding.
I chipped the stones with my scalpel, and the cracks are carved.
I did not sand the column to straight, for stone is a nature product and would not be all the same size and shape.

Next, I draw with a pencil where the stones will be coming trough the plaster of the wall.
The squares drawn is the location of the stones.

For making the stones, I used old brushes where I pulled out the bristles.
Ending up with just the shaft that I pressed a bit oval.
Using two or more different sizes that will give different stones.

Making sure to press down randomly for more variety, I ended up with this result.

A bicycle added as a prop

With this method I made the cobbled street too.
And I carved the sidewalk tiles with a scalpel and toothpick.
A manhole from miniart is added with wood glue.

Added a park bench, and this will be the final setup.

To make the plaster for the big wall, I use white air-clay.

Rolled it out as thin as possible, and I cut the top and bottom straight.

I used wood glue on the parts where the plaster will be, to glue on the clay.

Pressing down the clay will reveal the location of the stones.
By pulling off the clay, I create plaster that came loose.

With water on my finger, I make all the clay nice and smooth.
With a scalpel I carved some cracks.

To glue the wall onto the street, I use toothpicks and wood glue.

And this is the result.

This is going to dry for 24 hrs then it will be primed and painted.

This ends update 7

Update 8

Hello and welcome to another update!

This time I will paint the Park wall, build the figures, and make a tarp for the back of the truck like the one thats in the original photo that I'm using as inspiration for this build.

So I primed the dio first in a dark grey primer.

And with the airbrush I applied the base colors.
Grey for the stones, sand color for the plaster on the wall, and rust for the brick wall.
The fence will be hand painted dark steel, and the bench dark green

While that's drying, I started the build on the figures that Iv'e bought for this dio.
It was hard to find decent figures that would fit this dio, but I found MiniArt figures that came very close to the crew on the original pic. I will show that pic later in this threat.

Flash... a lot of flash....

I had to alter the gunner BIG time...
Heated up his arms and legs to make him fit the chair properly.
The seams will be filled and sanded later.

All other figures are really nice after cleaning them up.
They also have lots of seams, but nothing to serious..
They all pose for a photo thats going to be taken. The guy on the left is rushing to get his helmet on, the guy on the right is very grumpy for he does not want to get his photo taken... lol
That's my story anyway...

Dusted up the wheels and some parts of the truck.
The truck is almost finished.

Time to make the tarp from Magic sculp.
The baby powder is for preventing the sculp sticking to the table.

Rolled out and cut at shape.

I'm covering up the model with kitchen foil to make sure the model will be protected.

Using the cutting residue to make some "stowage" for under the tarp.
No need for detailing that, for the stowage will not been seen.

Folding the tarp over the model, making sure to make some folds and letting it look natural.

While that's drying, I started to make the actual "park" behind the wall.
Reality in scale, a Dutch company, makes very realistic ground covers like this forest ground that i will be using.

Applied wood glue

And applied the ground cover.
Finished it off by soaking it in diluted wood glue.

Painting the bricks and rocks with different shades of brown and grey.

Added some sand pigment between the bricks.
I will clean off the residue with white spirit later.

Cobble road gets the same treatment as the wall.

Also a dark sand pigment added between the cobble stones and let it set with pigment fixer from AK.

Removed the residue with white spirit, and dry brushed the stones with light brown and light grey.

A small tree of sea foam painted the trunk brown will added into the park.
There will be a bigger tree in a later stage of the build.

Propaganda posters added.

And Coen said to me on FB that It would be nice to integrate the original photo that I use for my inspiration, into the diorama.
I thought that would be awesome, so I came up with the idea to make a poster of that pic.
I added it at the back of the park wall.

And this is how far i'm so far.

And that will end this update for now guys!

I googled for ww2 French propaganda posters under images.
choose witch ones I wanted, and printed them out in different sizes on normal paper.
Then just cut out the posters and glued them on the wall with wood glue

Update 9

Hi guys!
First off all, a big thank you for all the compliments i'm getting.
It gives me a warm feeling inside

Anyway, time for another update.
A small one this this time, for i'm working my butt off lately to earn some modelling money

This time I added leafs to the diorama.
The crew has gloves and scarf, so it was either to be a winter dio, or a fall dio.
I never made a fall dio before, so that is what it's going to be.

The leafs are made from the crops of a birch tree. When you take them apart you will get all small leaf shaped thingies!
I painted them in fall colours, and glued them stuck onto the diorama with diluted wood glue.
When it tried, I gave it another pass with the diluted wood glue.

Here's the result i'm happy with.

I also took the time to weather the park bench. Just chipped it with a small paintbrush, and gave it a dark wash to make it more used.

Added some Ivy to the wall. This was a small piece I ad in my stash, bought long time ago so can't remember the brand.
It was a summer ivy, so I painted some leafs brown and yellow.

I was missing something on the park bench.
So I put a old fella on the bench, admiring the GMC.

On the original pic I spotted a home made holder for two extra jerrycans on the front bumper.
And I want to copy that photo as good as I can, so I decided to scratch some kind of holder too.
I cut some evergreen strips, and came up with this...

The jerrycan laying on top will be tied down with rope.

And here are both sides done.
I used one US and one German jerrycan on purpose to give it a more interesting and "what if" look.

The camouflage net that's been placed onto the side, is a net from AFV club.
I thought that would be a real net, but nope, it's some kind of thick decal.
It;s really tough to make them, and therefore I do NOT recommend them....

This is how they say you should make them... insane....
Thank god I had enough to make at least 1 rolled up netting.
The rest ripped while handling it.

And that's all Iv'e got time for now.
I will try to paint the figures this weekend, and bring the dio to life..
