Quick tip for cutting open doors

Hey guys, I'm building a 1/24 Revell Golf gti mk2, and decided to do a bunch of custom work to it (took out stock speakers and replaced them with two 12 inch subs[scaled], made a hinge for the back seats so they can move up and placed an amp wired to the subs behind the seats) and now I'm thinking about hinging the doors. And here's the tip:

A lot of people cut their doors out with the back of an exacto blade. This works, until you slip and scratch up the panel and need to spend extra time filling it with putty and sanding it down. Not only that, there's a fairly open gap from where you cut the doors.

A new method I figured out is to use sewing thread. You can either make a starter hole with the blade and insert the thread, or start from the top where the window would be. Either way, you mount the car onto something, or just tape it down, and then move your thread back and forth. In my opinion, this produces a much cleaner cut without having to worry about slipping, and even reduces the size of the gap when you cut the door out. I imagine threaded fishing line would work just as good or even better.

Here's a couple of pictures. just sanded the edges but not much.





This is the side of the trunk door. Very clean cut.


So try this method out! It's a lot easier to use and get used to in my opinion. I don't have a real steady hand so I spent more time filling scratches than actually cutting the door out!

It's a great model indeed! It's one of my best models yet so far. The amount of work gone into it is crazy. I'll definitely post the finished model!
