Hobby Boss ME 262 1/48

Thought I'd have a go at a ME 262 but didn't want to build a night fighter as I wanted to do a more colourful camo pattern. I've bought the full PE set to go with it and my first thoughts were

"Seriously? I can't even see these parts with my glasses on!"

But so far they have worked out pretty well and I haven't fed the carpet monster at all.

This kit has loads of great detail already, so I was wondering if the PE would be worth the effort. But yes I think it is.

I've starting playing with washes and hair spray, so I'm going for a very worn out look.

I've put some extra texture on to the seat back and fitted the PE belts here. Everything fits well, but the seat is a very tight fit into the cockpit which has scraped some paint off. That's not going to be seen, but I had to cut of the lower belt buckles as they wouldn't have fitted.

Squashing it all together was tight fit that needed some CA glue to hold it at one end whilst forcing the over end into place. That horrible blob of glue won't be seen!



The gun bays have extra PE as well ( even more since this was taken)



More soon hopefully but I'm not a fast builder!

The HB Me 262s are great kits!
I did not have any major hang ups with mine.
Have them all and have built the V056 so far.
This was a well used and worn Aircraft and thats the look I Went for, You can see it in my portfolio.
Only tip would be to dry fit a lot and Your fine.
I also used the Eduard PE and Yes, lots ans lots of nice detail!
My with this kit was the decals that just fell apart...I hope it was an isolated thing with that individual kit.

I have your thread book marked and I've been using it as a build guide, but can I ask a question?

You put a lot of weights into yours, do you really need them or will the metal (front) undercarriage mount that is supplied be enough?

Of course You can ask me anything mate!

I dont know really since I choose the plastic part and did not use the metal one...?
But I would assume (even though I dont trust many manufacturers) that the supplied one would be enough.
Check Pauls thread also, I think he used it!?

Went back and checked my pics...
You probably dont need that much weight.
However I felt it was quite tail Heavy so wanted to be on the safe side.

Started putting the built components into the fuselage, this kit is almost a clip together! Everything fits fine, maybe a little too tight in places.
I decided not to bother with the extra instruments in the tail, as they can only be seen through a tiny access panel. I've glued the panel in place and I'll only have the canopy and the gun bays open.
Two halves stuck nicely with the minimum of Tamiya extra thin.





Started adding the PE wiring harness to the wheel bays




But when I tried to fit the wings they needed to be forced into place…And me being heavy handed I found that squeezing the sides of the fuselage into place was enough to break my "minimum Tamiya extra thin" bond on the top




It's my birthday this weekend and my wife has bought me the Vallejo full set of RLM colours…….. but she doesn't know that yet

Remember now, the wing fit was...a bit of a challenge. No biggie but did quite a lot of sanding and test fitting Before it would go on nicely.
You can see where i filled in the pic and also remember sanding the Square piece at the back on the straight side and the corresponding fuse part over and over since it was to tight. Looks like You have the same gaps! The extra detail inside the belly spice it up some more, nice!

I've got everything filled sanded and primed now!

The wing roots really only needed a tiny bit of filler, but I went way over board with the squadron green.

Looking good so far! Last week I just order the same one! On the bench I have the HobbyBoss Ta-152 1/48. Also a very good fit. HobbyBoss is doing a great job! What do you think, is the PE really necessary? Or it will be also good without?

I've never used PE before and to start with I was wondering if it was worth the effort! But now I've got the hang of it I really like it. That said, this kit already has more detail than anything I've built before so even with out the PE I'd say it's great. Especially as they are really cheap in the UK.

A lot of the parts are a tight fit that need to bent into place, but due to the shape of nearly every piece, the spring clips that I use as clamps won't stay in place whilst the Tamiya ET dries. So I'd recommend some decent clamps if you don't have any.

If I remember rightly, the cockpit PE was about £12 but the full set £16 so it didn't seem worthwhile just getting the cockpit upgrade. The kit cost £16 as well so the total price was £32 which is well worth it for the quality of the kit.

I'm still pretty new to this and I've only bought the kits before that I could get at my local shops. i.e.: Airfix or sometimes Revell. The quality of the Hobby Boss kit has kind of blown me away.

Started laying down some camo, not sure if I've chosen the correct order to layer the colours but so far so good.
The RLM 02 on the nose cone went down really well, I love that colour!

Nose cannons broke off and I can only find one of them now

Just added another item to my list of "things you weren't expecting"...... Whilst giving the bottom another coat of RLM76 one of the engines fell off!

So here it is in it's factory fresh paint work. I've not done any free hand dapple before....

Started ageing paint work, remember I'm going for a very worn out look. It's not exactly how it looked in my head, but I haven't really got going on the weathering yet. Decals seem to be going down okay

Cracking job with the extra details to bring the cockpit, gun bay and undercarriage bays alive! It's funny, just this afternoon I was in my local hobby store and I picked this kit up to look at it, along with the other Hobby Boss version of the later ME262. I ended up walking out with a Tamiya 1/48 Vought F4U-1A Corsair instead. Maybe next visit, I'll grab this kit!

Great work CJ, I love the freehand dappling paintwork. The 262 fuselage really is 'shark-like' . The interior detail is brilliant too, well done.
