Tiger I Late production Tamiya 1/35

I would like to participate in this Tiger I Tank SiG in honor of Coen with this 'tribute' to a great guy ! It really is a pleasure to honor him by participating in this SiG , still I hope to have the time to finish it with all my builds !



I will do an build using the kit and Tamiya PE grill kit and the detail set for the zimmering , yes Tamiya kit doesn't have the zimmerit, you could do it using putty so they suggest ...but will try to use this detail set ...then and as it is in honor of Coen will try to do a small diorama with the tank and with some Infantry , but will try to do it step by step and will see ...

Do not have any unit info on the box so this will be a build for fun and not too much worries in historic accuracy or colors or so ...but building models for fun is good !!! right Lord Coen ?

Thank you guys ...a little late on the start on this one , but hope to have fun building it , as entering this SiG is already a lot of fun , and all the builds are very nice so far , well start this today , so first the sprues :

Bottom Hull and wheels



Upper Hull , turret , and more ARghhhh track links ( sorry ...still with some memories from the MErkava build ...)



One more sprue :



It will be used also , some Zimmerit stickers from Tamiya , and some PE for the grills and the AA MG sight .

I noticed now that we can have ( I think ) the option to built the 007 Tiger , the last Tiger from Wittman , but I noticed one color scheme that has a yellow band with number 312 and a knight , also it is a Tiger with two tones scheme , Dark Yellow and Red Brown , so I will go for this one just because I'm a little tired to see three tones tigers , and will have plenty of opportunities to get three color schemes with other builds ...and I liked the Knight symbol , while making some Internet search on this , as I haven't none Tiger references , I found this picture :



seems that it is Schwere Panzer-Abteilung 505, tank number 312 (3rd Company, 1st Platoon, 2nd vehicle) , well let's get started :

Thank you Mike , yes I saw this picture and already will try to get some German horse cavalry , and yes the log ...still don't know how will do it , but believe that I remember to saw some Resin kit for this from Reality in Scale , today will be shopping day !

I had another idea to do the Tiger in a street but then I saw this while I was making some investigation as I become curious on those marks , and never build nothing with a horse, well not Napoleonic I mean

Will post some more updates today but for now already placed one and looks good... , I have some bad experiences with stickers with one used in a FW 190 A8 fighter ( the sticker was for the additional armor plate that this planes had in the cabin ) , the issue was that the sticker almost disappear with the primer ...don't know why the reaction , but hope that doesn't happen here ...also do not know the behaviour of these in the future , one good thing is that it is very easy to place ...but will see in next update .

You could just use a stick with the bark taken off then paint it up. I've used them many times and they look just as good as the resin ones (better I find, as they're made of wood)

Well , maybe tomorrow at lunch break I will go and search for a small stick in the garden near the work , and yes , you are right , the natural thing it is better than the resin , I search aroud and remember to buy this in a shop , but this are so tidy and perfect but seem a good scale , maybe I will try to make some cuts and then to make some variation or even leave them like this , paint them only with some wood color and a wood wash ...





but will look for some stick with more natural look , something funny when I look at the picture the logs seem glued to the tank , I'm wondering how they are fixed to the tank , maybe on that cable for towing or so ....

Also I have some PE from Tamiya for the grills and MG's sight ...already make some dry fitting on the upper hull of the front part of the hull

Here I placed the exhausts covers , now will be difficult to paint them with some red brown to depict some rust ,but maybe I can do it after ...I hope



Should put more zimmerit now :



Wheels on the tank ...again later I would regret when placing the tracks ...

The zimmerit on the back , should make the holes to fix some of the parts, but it is easy to place and seems a very realistic surface for the scale ...



Tamiya are easy kits to build





I prefer to place all the pieces in the build and paint them later , options ...has good things and bad things on doing like this ...



already painted the MG ...now with the primer will need to paint it again

In this you can see in the bottom front armor the zimmerit sticker , still hadn't no issues , and not big gaps between each sticker ...now to finish the zimmerit in the front , PE in the grills and it is done for today .

I ordered some German Cavalry from Dragon , could have to wait for some days , until then I will paint and finish the Tiger ... as I'm going to do a diorama as the picture , by the way if we look at the picture the Tiger seems as to leave the stand ...brand new , no rust , no fenders bended ,, ...seems that we will have a 'shinny' Tiger ...

So back with some more work on this Tiger build ...

Not done much , but just to say that it is a very pleasant build , and As my first Tiger , I like a lot this kit , the fit is superb , and even the zimmerit stickers think it work perfectly , I maybe try later one day to use the putty as also they mention in instructions and as some of you guys used in your build with very nice effect , still the stickers are easy ...do not know really in some months how it would be the look of it in the kit ...

Well more zimmerit applied in front armor



The Tamiya PE grills on the engine vents



Glued the cables and tools , and the extinguisher ...by the way , a question , I saw in some builds that people paint the extinguisher red , it supposed to be red ?



Now as I'm going what I think it is a 'late version' in this step I should make an additional hole in the front of the turret ...



Also must choose the correct turret for the late or final version , I will go for the first version , the differences according to the instructions are the right hatch that is smaller in late version and to remove some of the projections ...in Final version there is a large hatch and a ventilating (I think...) ,
also the main gun is different

Zimmerit on the turret , looks nice !



Must have to drill some holes so I can later put here some track links



Now that is a Tiger ...



The part that I think ot was most difficult was to place the zimmerit sticker in the front of the turret on this side ...doesn't look very nice as we must place one sticker on top of the other , and doesn't look really nice to see ...

Also in that small side hatches doesn't look that good ...





Will Prime it now using my favourite Primer TAmiya , this time Oxide Red to go as the real stuff ...actually I buy this for building a King Tiger , but this are supposed to have also Red Primer so ....

Will do the Primer now , and after the painting session , that should occur today , I will use Tamiya Spray , a first coat of TS-3 Dark Yellow , and later some TS-1 Red Brown , will use some stuff that I buy some time ago that is panzer putty , will try it for the first time , so we can see the result of it !

Thank you Mikael ! Well , at least this Tamiya kit almost build by itself , it has been a relaxing build , and a lot of learning on the Tiger I ...

Today and after Priming the Tiger in Oxide RED :





I then painted the tank , but I use the Spary TS-3 Dark Yellow , I then decide to do the brown paint with Tamiya XF-64 using airbrush ...

This is the result , with already some more detailed painting , I choose white to paint the inside of the hatches ...







Now , on this I wasn't sure how to paint , in the Photo seems to me that the barrel is a dark color , it hasn't the camo ...I check and search and seems that sometimes the tanks were 'rushed' to the front with the barrel in their color , some mention the Red oxide color , others some dark grey , even a Dark Iron grey , and that is what I use , the barrels should have been made of some gun metal as they should resist the heat , so decided to use tamiya Dark Iron XF- 84 ...



All the detail in the tools were painted using Tamiya Enamel paints , that I think are much better to paint this small details than acrylics one .

about the camo scheme , well do not had too many photos to folow so i decide to paint in 'free-hand', it isn't good , but now as I look to the tank I like it and with the figures and decals should be nice to see in the diorama , now must make the tracks ...wish me luck guys !

Looks really cool now António, very god colours.
As for the barrel, in black and white photos it's impossible to tell the difference between red black and grey. So going just by the photo you would never know what colour to paint the barrel.
However, the documents help in this department. Replacement barrels and barrels on newly shipped tigers to that company were all painted in dark grey primer.

Thank you Mike , it is because of this , that I'm enjoying this build so much , the research take me to new modelling horizons , but really , it is fascinating all the variants and to see how this tank can be represented in such different ways , it is really great , and of course your comments are always very welcome being the Tiger expert aroud

some more update , as I only could make some more little stuff today , now 4 all days to relax from work and to do some modelling and reading

The tamiya figure for the tank .....will not use it , it isn't a bad figure , but it is strange , seems out of scale for the tank , could be me but will not use this one ...



Have this Alpine set ...more interesting figures , they have this camo colors , but will paint them in black so think it will be ok ...the tank commander is doing some gesture to hurry or to hold , but will use it





Also I start to look at the tracks ....links ....give me rubber tracks , please ....or not , well must start on this tomorrow so I can prime them and paint them while they are flexible ...100 pieces for one side 99 pieces form other side ...do not yet know why let's see later





So I let go the tracks and bck for more figures , the Tank ones I receive today :



One is seated ...



This one has some Headphones , and a separate arm , it is for placing behind an open hatch ,



The guy seated , very nice figures in resin !

Photo etched for figures ...what I have done , the horse shoes are in PE ...will somebody will see that ?



A lot of helmets , and acessories for German Infantry ...sorry cavalry !

Not a so detailed kit as the one before , still the figures on this have some very nice detail ...

Those figures are awesome!!! I love alpine pieces. They're some of my favourites.
I think that the problem with that original figure is his head is huge. I have the same figure and he's a weird looking dude.

The detail of the Alpine figures is very good , it is my first time using them , but great figures ! , as for the Tamiya one , yes , the guy has a head that looks like a Ballon and with very wrong porportions ! So It is out of the team this time

Well some more updates ...

So While the figures were drying for the primer , I start to do some horses , as I'm going to make three ...already the look of the diorama will not be exactly as the picture , but all will be there .

So two are done , quite nice , but some filling to be done on the joint where the horse neck and body get toghether ...this are the cossacks horses figures , and the equipment is some different than the ones from the German Cavalry ...one of the Big challenges will be to paint properly the horses , let's see how it will be



that plastic bag is with some PE for the stirrups (think that is the wright English word ... )

Now , the 'infamous' link tracks ...

will use this plastic piece supplied in the kit to do the alignment and will use a Tweezer and some glue ...this one is the Super-Expert form Faller , a very nice glue in my opinion when you want a fast bond and very precise due to the needle aplicator , remember to use this since I buid 1/24 cars in my youth , still is one of the essentials of my workbench , and I use it often in the builds!

So 99 for left track , 100 for the right track



After being all glued and while is is still flexible , in the instructions they advice to wait from 30 minutes till 1 Hour , I actually took the track and see after about 30 minutes was ok , so I prime the track using AK Primer for Tracks , a very usefull primer , it gives a color like rusted steel ...and then then same method I use always for my stell tracks ...

Drybrush with some XF-56 Mettalic Grey from Tamiya and give a wash on it with AK Wash for tracks , and to me they get very fine , not like a stell track , but for my level of build the effect is very nice and realistic .







Already placed in the Tiger , and finnaly a step done that I was very afraid to be complicated , but in this case , I do not know If it Tamiya way to do , the fit was just perfectly , even I have glued the Sprockets and wheels and the fit was so nice !!! Really , I made the same method in the MErkava build some weeks ago and it took me about a messy afternoon to fit the tracks ...



Use the plastic acessories to make some pressure and worked very well :





About the figures then and after I primed them ...no Big issues except for one arm of the guy from the right where I must put some putty to fill the gap , the arm was separeted , then some sanding , and presto we have 4 Tiger I crew ready for their Tank ! The figures both from Alpine and Tank are very nice , very realistic poses and very nice detailded , still I need to pain a lot better my figures , specially the face , on this I will not paint no eyes ( white and the pupils ) as they all become like Japanese Manga ! SO will only give them some oil wash .



DEcals ...

Tamiya suply on this version this decals ....and a small decal with some( it seems ) correction for the AbT 505 symbol , the knight on the original sheet has two prints for the same side and some different colors , I use the decals that i think were the correction as they seem the adequated ones ...



Decals ok ...still to place the decals on the zimmerit stickers , and all except the tiger number on the gun barrel should be on the zimmerit ...well you must have some patience and really soften the decals , but as they aren't that many was an easy task , and no issues with the decals , the final look is very nice , this is a different Tiger , also I like very much of one Tiger that has some Mammoth or something as the symbol of the battalion (think it is from 502 Heavy Panzer battalion , I saw it in a Panzer III or something in some picture ...uh I'm getting an expert ) , maybe for some other time ...fascinating stuff the Tiger I and all the variants and camo schemes , no wonder that a guy make more than one ...







Now will use this oils from Mig for the first time to blend the colors and make a not weathered effect as this Tiger isn't very worn ,



Will use this two colors :



To do some dirt and mud in the wheels as the tank is in some muddy terrain ..this Pigments , fixers and paints from AK , also some Mud effect (the small pot) from Reality in scale for adding some more 'heavy' mud to the tracks ...



Also i the exausts I used some MIG productions Light Rust effect , and some Oil and Grease in the cover of the motor , but just lightly as I do not want to do a heavy weathered tank on this one ! , the Base of the diorama is done , will need to add some mud , the base is from Model SCene it is their F600 , it is a forest base , but that is what I have on hand and will look good after soem mud on it , but the figures are now on the tank :





Now something I must add , the unditching logs ...I thought to use some natural ones , didn't find any suitable , I had this very perfect wood sticks , even they were almost the scale still were very perfect , and I bought soem resin ones from REality in Scale , they are good , still they are , I think , a little small in lenght , but I will use them , choose this two :



the kit from Reality in scale is nice , it brings soem rope and some metal chains to you to use



You get 6 logs





So now it is to paint them and add to the Tiger

sorry about the pictures , but more detail in the reveal , but I need to work on the horses still will be the final phase of this very enjoyable build .

Your wish is my command ... , here they are after some XF-64 Red Brown from Tamiya for the outside and some XF-57 Buff for the inside of the logs ...



Dark Earth XF- 52 for those ropes !

Then my favourite wash for Wood and they become a little darker



With some more light :



I started the figures , and look this PE , it has Iron Crosses , badges , the swivel for the belt , and the shoulder stripes ( I do not know the name of this in English , sorry ...)

Nice , but will not use all of it , will keep it for another build

BEfore I Prime the two horses and the Soldier , some putty should be used , , one of the horses has a lot of gaps to fill



See the detail of the PE , we can get to have spurs ( think it is the correct word ) , see the nice detail ? YOu do not have to ear me calling all the names except nice ones to this ....it is insane , but I manage to do some PE in figures ...this is craziness guys !!!



Ok then paint the figures and will be doen and off we go to the final reveal :
