Good day all, I was introduced to this forum through Paul's series of Bf109 build videos on YouTube -- thanks for that, the videos are really outstanding and a wealth of information. Looks like a great site with many generous, experienced craftsmen!

I don't have much time for modelling, with a very busy work and family life. I decided a few years ago to take a crack at wooden ship modelling; the precision and detail of sail rigging was something I had always admired. And while I would say that I prefer wood as a medium, the sheer variety of projects and speed to get nice looking results has drawn me back to plastic as well. I had done some plastic modelling as a kid but nothing in the intervening decades.

My modelling interests are very Canadian-centric, mostly aviation, mostly WWII and later. I'm working on a couple of Airfix 1/72 Spitfires just as cheap and quick builds to start building up some skills as well as slow progress on the Academy 1/400 Titanic. Projects I have my eye on are various Spitfires and Hurricanes of RCAF squadrons -- Hobbycraft's Avro Arrow (obligatory Canadian content!) -- Lancaster B.X, the Mynarski Memorial aircraft at the Canadian Warplane Heritage museum -- Italeri's forthcoming Short Stirling B.I, we have a family connection to an aircraft of 218 Gold Coast squadron -- and many more that could fill ten times the amount of free time I have!

Wally: Welcome to the forums from yet another Canuck who grew up in Ottawa. Think you will enjoy the group here and they are certainly a great source of info and help.

One quick question. I am going to be retiring back to Ottawa in a couple of years (currently living outside Houston TX) and was wondering what the hobby shop situation was there now? When I moved from Ottawa a many years ago there were shops in Bells Corners and downtown.

Fred, there are two major hobby shops that I'm aware of -- Hobby House in Vanier and Hobby Centre just off Merivale Rd (they used,to be around Bank / Hunt Club area). I'd say they are both pretty good, but more often than not I need to look to the Internet to find what I'm looking for.

Wally: Thanks for the update. That sounds a lot like the situation here. We have a Hobby Town outlet about a 30 minute drive from the house and a Hobby Lobby about a 10 minute drive. The closer place is a craft store with a few low end models while the Hobby Town has a better selection of kits, paints and supplies.

Believe it or not I am looking forward to getting back home - even if it is -20C there and +20 C here!

Hey Wally, got lots of Newf friends and relatives in Stitsville. Been to Ottawa a number of times over the years, last time in 2012 and went home happy after visiting your two local hobby shops. They are great places.

But I have to say, the best shop I ever set foot in was Wheels and Wings in Toronto, they got EVERYTHING!
