Zvezda T-90 WIP

hello guys.... just got tired of working on the Hobby Boss HST so...
I started a new kit and What a kit !!!

the New Zvezda T-90 is a Gem to work on !

I added a little Norm's Touch to it by performing my colored Mylar Optics treatment !
using Future Floor Wax as my Adhesive and added a coat on top to sandwich the film in a protective coating !

looking pretty !

The Shtora Infra Red Dazzlers also received some treatment !!! and looks pretty good ! almost like if they were illuminated from behind !!

The Gunner sight is different and the reveal will have to wait till the paint stage !

Next are all the small Periscopes on either Coppola and I'll be sealing all this in Latex to be ready for paint !

I love the lens effect you do. I am going to have to find some of those coloured streamer things as I might have a modern MBT coming in the post to me which would benefit from this treatment on the sights.

The HST was killing me... and now this Awesome kit is Kicking me ALIVE again!!!

Those optics are fun to do and with FUTURE as an adhesive..!! it makes them POP ! its so Clear !
just make sure not to touch them with anything Acrylic afterward or the Future will Turn WHITE !

I am looking for a Enamel based rubber cement I can use.. as a mask now... before Paint. so I don't ruin my nice NSVT sight ! Pink maybe but none the less.... COol loOking ! LOL

I might do an update on doing optics using Future to make them more Brilliant (shinny) ! like a Part 2 to my older YT video on doing Optics... Although its not 100% accurate but its better than nothing or CLOSED !
I have 5 or 6 small periscopes to do all around the cupolas and I will do them at the end !

now a days ... rare are the Clear vision blocs of the past.... doing them Green was the norm.... but now a days the optics are multi-coated to lessen lens flare and also for Anti-laser radiation ( exposure )

guys... I was just told that Beside Zvezda, Meng has released their T-90A and now Trumpeter is coming up with an Earlier Variant of the T-90 with a Cast Turret not the Welded Turret we have here.. so now we will have 3 T-90 to build ! HOOT ! yeah I know... more money !!!

I should be done the Turret tonight or tomorrow... 18 steps all together... just for the turret !!!

that's almost 100 pieces there... almost ! just for the turret.... that's insane !

I love this idea norm and it looks the absolute nuts. I'm still seeking the said streamers, no joy thus far but I will find them.

On the subject of masking, would a layer of Vaseline over the optic before painting mask it ? I only say this because when we used to paint the real thing we smeared all the lights and reflectors with axle grease and cleaned it off after

It could be a solution but could also prove dangerous to a Flat paint.... As the PG. would or could spread its oils to a very absorbent Flat paint during clean up!..

And there isn't much you can do to stop the spreading after it starts!
it's like a cancer...

I'll do some tests using the same surface. With both Masking solutions I have in hand first!
Then apply the winner to my Optic the other optics surfaces are protected with liquid masking agent
Only Since they are behind Clear styrene.

I am sure you can find Party whistles In a Dollar store or birthday store! Even craft stores with Mylar Confettis? Maybe. .?

I'm well over 130 parts on the turret and I still have a few to add on! Just incredible!

If the turret was this amazing! I wonder what the Hull has in reserve for me?

Trully the Best kit, I ever worked on!

Just added some ERA blocks at the front and a Wind Sensor... Most if not all the sensors or optics are covered in Latex Masking agent (green goo).

Norm buddy, I've never built any modern armour... but watching you work on this girl... I had to go pick one up.
I just ordered the Meng version from LuckyModel.
Should be here in 2 or 3 weeks.
I'll do a box review of it when it gets here.
I've never built a Meng kit before so it should be fun.
If it's anything even close to what you have there I'll be blown away.

I want the Meng kit as well but this Zvezda T-90 is pretty darn cool as it is!

Sorry for the Empty Wallet ! But mine isn't much fuller! LOL

2013 has been an expensive year as the great kits keep on coming out! Trumpeter isn't done releasing new Kits yet! Same thing for many other companies!

I read somewhere that there are 199 pieces to the turret! The Zvezda one that is! So I must be nearing the assembly! I never put so many parts together for a turret in my entire life!

LOL

Take care guys! Hope you like your T-90's. especially if a Zvesda like me! As for the Meng? Why will have to wait for that in Box Review!

Just ordered the meng myself Cohen not that I don't like the zvezda norm I just have this thing about tracks and I wasn't sure about the zvezda version, from the pics I've seen the mengs tracks look more to my taste. But it's all your fault norm!!! My kids are on lard sandwiches for the rest of the month

*workable tracks
*Photo etch road wheel paint mask
*fully detailed engine and engine-bay with pose-able hood
*one piece turret. Vs. 6!

I freaking better love it... it costs near $70 with shipping.

That's not cheap for and armour kit.
Normally I pay $20-$35 at the most for kits... I wait for sales.
This was an impulse thing... shame on you Norm... corrupting us WWII armourers with your new and fancy toys.

Oh I don't fear the hull and drive train!

I truly believe the hardest was the turret! 199 parts went in the turret! I am not kidding you!

I do fear the "Meng kit" thou! LOL

I am getting private info on a color scheme that migth be a little extreme and different!

just a quick Note!

This kit although very detailed and all..... is not for everyone out there.... Certainly not for the new Beginners we have in the crowd!

its not my first kit obviously.... OLD Crusty fart like me welcomes a finely detailed kit now and then..... LOL and I want to warn Some of you that might get all excited at getting the very same kit !

a gentle warning to point out that ... Mold ""parting lines"" will have to be "hammered away" on all the parts...

ok maybe not all parts... some are blemish free !!!
But for those of you that Still don't trim those off ! Sand them down ... or scrape them to oblivion !!!
I know it is a pain to do but... in order to get a TOP of the line assembly....
you will have to be patient and do the Parts preparation before assembly can take place !

its a warning that I have read in FSM magazine ! and I have applied it to the letter and
I am very happy I did !

Slows down the assembly !!! but the end results are only going to be Better for all of us that do !!!

its the same with most models...

Sorry to make this Post sound a little An_l retentive... but I wanted to let the public know that ...
This kit comes with it share of Preparation....

Its not like building the latest TAMIYA where that sort of thing is almost things of the past !!! their
Quality insurance being so HIGH !!! Mold parting lines on Tamiya kits are .... minimal... while on this kit...
are visible and a little annoying at times ! but manageable with a little patience and a good sanding sticks arsenal !

Keep posted as I will be posting pictures of the TUB tonight or Tomorrow... and will be making a Video update
on my YT Channel !!!

Nice kit overall !!!

Done a little work on the hull tonight ! And main Deck

Sorry no pictures yet!

Lots of clean up was necessary on the lower hull! It took a long time to prep all the parts for Assy.
I decided to stop and let everything dry solid before continuing!

But it's all good! Although My bottom plate was a little warped! Which can happen!!! And seems to be expected on all copies of this kit! As per what I read online!

Since its a 4 parts Hull! And as explained in the In Box Review! Sometimes manufacturer do this to
Keep mold cost down! It tskes a little longer to prepare all the parts necessary but you get the same good results with a few more steps and a little patience!

But I had to take the long route around! Glue the parts that were straight with C.A and once hardened! I continued gluing the rest to bring everything back to straight level! it's called Stich gluing!

From the upper hull (Deck) parts breakdown I foresee a proper T-72 in our future!
I just hope Zvezda would announce it!

The lower hull is curing and upper hull is almost ready to be Attached to the lower hull! Wht ever is left to do on either sub Assy. Is mostly cosmetic !

I will go over all those sub assemblies in my Week-end Update Video!

After posting my second update on this build! Video on my channel
I painted a base color on and let it dried or a few days!

I then started to install the first layer of Jay's Works Paint Masks!

Not to difficult but a new experience! Once on location ! A Light burnishing and move on to the next color!

7$ a sheet and they have loads of WWII German Paint Schemes !
available through Lucky Model Hong Kong and other On Line stores I am sure... but for 7$ its a steal !
not sure but them might have free or very low shipping cost associated with them ???

I got a second set for my Canuck M109 that I might be doing next ? They don't cover everything... but sure beast doing it by hand ! 7$ is a joke ! well worth my sanity ! never done hard line camo before... so it is going to be an experiment !

Finally the maskings!!!!

lol I'm really interested to see how these work. How does I work with all of the T-90's bumps and grooves? Does it firmly attach itself to the kit with no fuss?

I've done the 3-tone camo by hand/brush plenty of times, no fun. Luckily most modern vehicles get covered with dust and mud so any mistakes can be covered up.

For the paint, that reference photo looks like it's just yellow (not sand/desert) with a dash of olive green. Looks like a banana pepper. Good luck and I can't wait to see your progress.

Hello guys !

Thanks for posting comments... it really helps boosting my morale and forces me to keep moving !

As far as bumps and humps ! The MASKs are laser cut from a 2D drawing and YES you are right.... it doesn't compensate for "some" of the Reliefs present on the model... the pieces are a little longer than needed so YES there is "Slack built in" !!! but not to the extreme !

So.... while smaller Mask pieces are easy to manage (lifting, moving and re-positioning) others are Rather Large and need finesse and harder to peel off safely if wrongly applied !

Once you are satisfied with the First Color MASK position ! Start rubbing and Burnishing the edges down for a perfect (or near perfect) seal to prevent leaks.... don't rub too hard ! just enough so you are confident it is Adhered well to the First Coat you are masking off !

if you keep your color spraying to a minimum ( light and Layered ) and NOT a laid-down as a WET Coat !!! Leaks will be kept to a minimum ! if you go Heavy...? Then, all bets are off !

While burnishing and flattening the tape, nice an smooth! do Not force it too hard into each grooves and crannies ! I used old paintbrushes and Q-Tips to gently rub it in ! and help it conform to the models details and it seemed to work well ! I might do a small video on my experience with it ? especially during the Tape Removal in order to show the world if I did a good job ? if it works.. to 85 to 95% the touch ups should be easy to repair and Liquid masking agent will come in handy for that? make sure to keep the over-spray to a minimum when repairing the corrupted colors !

Just understand that Masks applications will be different for every models out there.... If you knew in advance you were to use that MASK set ! Then you would avoid placing some of the parts on the kit.... and leaving those for later in the building process... This sort of advance planning could give you FLATTER surface to deal with !!!

There will be leakage, I just know it and will need to fix those one at the time.... Liquid masking agent will be my friend again Once I get there ! Its my first time with this system and so... I don't place too much Great Hopes in it... till proven otherwise.... a light coat of paint is preferable !!! going wet with a paint brush might be too much ???

I assure you, its the nature of the beast ! unless I use some Silly putty; I can live with some over spray ! just like in real life! You see it on real tanks anyway they are far from perfect !

The Full size masking MATS they use in real life... don't always cover some of the accessories present on the tank during paint... especially if the painting is done "out of factory" !
