trumpeter 1:32 P-47D Thunderbolt Miss Fine

Post by MarkVerploeg »

Hi guys
well i wasn't going to join this buddy build since i didn't have any big planes
mainly because the only ones i have are 1:48 scale Eduard kits and i think a large scale jet is way too big for a shelf in my display cabinets
but as i was in hobbyshop recently i found this kit at a good price and after looking over the box and seeing how big it is going to be i decided to get it and build it for this buddy build
there will be a few first time things with this build
1 is the fact that this will be a bare metal finish and for that i have got me a sort of starter kit of alclad aluminium colors
but i have a bunch of mr metal buffables as a back up just in case i don't like the result or the paints in general
and the 2nd will be that this will be my first plane ever with nudity on the nose
the last planes i build that had any kind of nose art where revell kits and i never seen such decals in there

but this is the kit i will be building
Image

Image
the instructions and painting layouts
there are 2 options but i will go for the Miss Fine version with the lady that forgot her clothes and the invasion stripes

Image
the wings and fuselage

Image
apperently a very big thing about this plane was the engine wich is a R2800 double wasp and the huge turbo/supercharger
the engine is devided over 3 smaller sprues and the massive supercharger is the big sprue

Image
you can chose between 3 styles of props with this kit
but i watched a youtube video the other day where several pilots where talking about their actions in this plane
and one was talking about a feature his plane had that actually helped to save his life
and that was the then brand new paddle style proppelor
this allowed the thunderbolt to climb faster as it scooped up more air and thus created more speed so i think i will use those since they where introduced a little while before D-Day so it is possible to have it on this plane

Image
all the steering surfaces and some wing parts

Image
and what would America's biggest interceptor and ground attack fighter be with out weapons
there are 2 sprues of each of these
the small ones are for the .50 cal Brownings
the larger sprue has parts for rocketlaunchers ,rockets , bombs and drop tanks
so enough options to choose from but i am thinking of showing this plane during maintenance and rearming so it will be open on some places and i don't think they would do that while the plane was fully armed so i will have to look for some reference about wich things where left on there during that process but i think the 3 barreled rocketlaunchers could be placed while they maintain this bird

Image
then there is a small box in the big box wich has these parts in it
some photo etch , clear parts for the cockpit and a clear engine coweling , rubber tyres wich have a small seamline to get rid off and a plastic film for the instruments
and some rubber .50 cal belts wich i think need some clean up as almost all ends are stuck together
and there are 2 sheets of decals but somehow photobucket doesn't show it to me :

Image
i like the overall look of the kit but like with almost every kit out there it can use some improvement
so i got the following additions for this build
Aber .50 cal barrels smooth type not the sleeves with holes in them
Eduard mask set
Eduard Zoom cockpit set
Eduard placards set
eduard gunbay set
the gunbay set is a big one and i am able to rebuild both of the gunbays with that
it also has a ton of ammo in there wich needs to be folded a bullet at a time but it looks better then the kit bullets

but my overall plan is to make this plane with the gunbys opened up and the cowling removed to show off the big engine
and i may add a base to it and some figures tools and that kind of stuff but that is for the future , first i want to just build and enjoy this big bir
thanks for stopping by
Cheers
Mark

I hope it is going to be good but i already found a few spots where it needs some extra attention
Nothing awefull but there are some that where difficult to mold
This is mainly at the engine supports where there are some epm's and the exhaust wich needs filling
The entire supercharger unit needs some seamline sanding
I assembled those parts yesterday and i will finish them today
Then i can see how everything is connected with the plumbing of the enginet to the supercharger to see if it needs some more work and then i can paint them
But i think i will build up all the internal bit before i start painting everything
I think i will do a update when i assemble or test fitted the engine and supercharger before i paint them and then start working on the cockpit with the extra bits
Thanks for stopping by

Sweet! Looks like a great kit and with all those after-market extras it should shine more than the bare metal surfaces! I love the nose art, I just hope it doesn't distract people away from your finished build! ;)

Looking forward to seeing this come together! :) :thumb1:

Cheers :cheers2:

Thanks Martin
The nose art decal isn't what you would call high def.
So it won't be a big distraction
It even came in a seperate black bag as censor
I am curious as how well the kill markings will be as those are 2 overlapping decals so they don't include a swastika in there
But i already found out the engine parts need some extra attension so i hope that the fuselage and wing parts are better then the exhausts
But the detail is good for a 8 year old kit so i think it was made before trumpeter started to improve their quality
But i have a Hind aswell in 1:35 and that is reviewed as a very good kit so they do know they are doing when it comes to flying machines

hi guys
well then i started building the "Jug"
but i wasn't feeling like starting with the usual , the cockpit
so instead i went to get the engine started
this is pretty big but has a lot of details and should look pretty good if i can get the painting and weathering right

so let's go to the pictures shall we

Image
this is going to be the back of the engine where the air from the turbocharger goes into the engine

Image
amd this is the front that goes over the propshaft
there is a choice for this part
you can pick this version wich is a casted piece i think
and a more straight bolted version but i like this rounded style better

Image
the 2 rows of cylinders in their most basic form
the spruegates where a bit of a pain to remove as they where on the ends of the cylinderheads and sanding would take off a lot of the cooling ribs aswell so i just used a knife

Image
then i added these small tubes on the heads

Image
i then added the covers for the cylinderheads
i wanted to use the other style of these that are supplied in the kit but these had a very small connecting point on the ends
these ones have a bigger connecting point so they will be better to use when the support frames are going to be glued on there
i don't really know what those start shaped things are but they remind me of a classic motorcycle engines pushrod housing
they will be painted seperatly as i would like them to have a different color then the cylinders
and this way they won't get in the way when i paint the cylinders either

Image
each exhaust side came in 2 parts
they needed a lot of sanding to get rid of all the seamlines in between the pipes
and the connecting point needed some filling
and since i plan to have the cowling off the plane it will be nice if it is all smooth without big holes in the exhaust

Image
the other engine parts
the support rings had a few emp's but those where all raised so i just sanded them away
the big ring that goes in between the 2 rows of cylinders had emp's aswell but those where all recessed so they where filled and sanded

Imageso with all the engine parts ready for priming ,i continued with the turbocharger
these are the 2 rings of the actual turbo and the air duct that goes from the front of the plane to the turbocharger

Image
i have no idea how these things are called but they are part of the airflow system of the turbocharger
the cross shaped parts are made up from 2 parts each and they are a bit though to get glued together because of their shape wich make it hard to apply pressure with clamps without either getting a miss alligned part or launching the clamp
so they needed some sanding to get rid of the uneven seamlines

Image
the same 3 parts but now assembled

Image
the actual turbocharger was the next thing to put together

Image
it was then glued on to the rest of the turbochargers system
the air intake duct was also glued on

Image
while that was drying i thought i could do a test fit of the engine
it all fits but not everything could be friction fitted
i only placed the exhausts on upside down but they fit and that was more important to me then actually placing them in the exact place they need to go
once the engine is painted i can use the air intake manifold that goes on the back of the engine as a referenco to see where the exhaust will go and make sure i glue them on the right cylinders

Image
a better view of the same piece
it looks really crowded with all those exhaust pipes and fuel lines but once there is some paint on there it should look better then this grey block of styrene

and that is all i have for now
i did some work on the cockpit today and the big bulkhead that sits in betwwen the cockpit and engine
i will build up all the parts of the interior first before i start priming and painting
this way i can do it all at once insteaad of doing everything in steps but there is not that much more interior after these things only some that are behind the cockpit
and once the cockpit is painted i can start with the first 2 photo etch sets as 1 is a cockpit detailing set and some of the placards go in there aswell
but i took a bit of time to go over the instructions of the placard kit and for the price they add a lot of detail as there are placards for all kinds of parts even the landing gear and the bellshaped housing that covers the propshaft
but i will do a new update once i have assembled or atleast prepped all the interior parts for priming
and then it is of to soem paintfumes

thanks for stopping by and untill next time
cheers ,Mark

Will follow along and watch you build one of my favorite planes...the tank of the skies
I have an old Revell version myself, but no way, no time to join the big bird build
This kit, love it's box art

I know your's will be a cool build when you finish
Tons of extra goodies + your skills :thumb2: :pop:

Thanks Scott
I hope it turns out okay , there are seamlines on a lot of parts and i just hope i don't have to sand and reacribe the fuselage
But planes aren't my normal subject so there are a few things that are new to me
It is the first big plane in more then 10 years and a lot has changed since then
It will be the first time i use self adhesive pe and the first time i do a bare metal finish
I have a few alclad paints that seem to be the best for this but if i don't pike them i can switch back to the mr hobby metal paints
But that would mean i have to buff the entire plane

The detail is looking good but some part din't fit as good as i would like but that is all internal stuff that will be hidden from view
If the wings and fuselage fit good i am happy

The airbrush version is supposed to be better.
Have seen some Mr hobby stuff look awesome
I am going to try the Alclad Chrome on my Ferrari's exhaust system...just a bit chicken
Make sure you test the metal paint out on a sprue or scrap first, they seem a bit technique sensitive
i.e. test the prime, gloss, metal paint and buff.... all areas you can screw up a body or fuselage and destroy the build
Good luck :cheers2:

It looks okay but needs a bit of work
I am painting and weathering the interior at the moment so i am almost ready to join the fuselage halfs
But i agree that Trumpeter has some cool large planes
And to be honest i like the 1:35 scale stuff they do aswell
Those big helicopters are very cool and i already have the Hind in the stash but maybe i will get another helicopter in the future

Thanks for the advice
But i have some alclad paints and used them already
I find them better then the buffable mr hobby metal paints
I used the turbocharger as a test subject since that is a large piece but in the end it will be invisible
I didn't have any problems with the paint and i really like them
The pressure is key with them and i tried to brush paint some to see if it can be used that way
That didn't work but overall they work fast and with a very nice result i must say
But i almost have enough pics and progress to do a update for the internal parts just before i glue the fuselage
The engine will have to wait for the next update as that needs more paint and detailing because the wiring is not included but i have 2 great reference photo's for that
So stay tuned
Cheers, Mark

Good for you for testing it out on a hidden part, very smart!
I have seen many good car builds where they wrecked the paint job and then destroyed the body trying to strip it
Better to test out a new product on something you don't care about
I have yet to slay my Alcald monster...will be careful with the pressures and light coats, thanks

I don't think that alclads are that hard to use
And i am no where near a experienced painter
They put on the bottles what kind of presure is best for the paint and i painted all the parts in 2 or 3 layers with a small break in between each layer
The primer is not so good for other paints as i have noticed because it is very smooth and even brush painted vallejo had problems to stick to it at first
Spraying paints was without problems though

Ooh
I didn't know that
But i did use it as a primer for the cockpit and it worked good enough
It only dries faster then the ammo for mig primer i usually use
But the surface is super smooth when you use the black base wich makes it hard to spray a medium or thick layer of paint over it
So i needed to paint it in 5 layers but i think it works as a primer
Lots of modellers use black paints as primers although they are not really primers

hi guys
time for a update
although much of the work i did up to this point will be hidden from view it still took me a lot of time to get to this point
i have been playing with alclads for the first time and i had a first go at detailling a piston engine
something i never tried before but i didn't go crazy and super detailed it but i added some sparkplug wires wich adds a nice thouch

but instead of me blabbering on ,let's go to some pictures

Image
Image
the work continued with the build of the bulkhead that will sit inbetween the engine and cockpit

Image
the oiltank and what i think is the back up tank
they look okay but there is not that much detail on them

Image
the first test fitting i did
the parts are not yet glued and the only new parts where the 2 large tubes that are part of the exhaust that runs from the engine back to the turbocharger

Image
the kit supplied photo etch grills where added

Image
i then started painting the parts
the turbocharger should be painted in mr hobby aqueous silver
but i used the alclad aluminium for this
the bulkhead is painted with mr hobby aqueous interior green

Image
after building the turbocharger i was qurious to see how big it is comparred to the fuselage and as you can see this thing takes up about 60 to 70 % of the total lenght of the plane
and yes i didn't bother to work the emp's
the entire part of the fuselage you see here will be hidden when the fuselage halfs are joined

Image
the bulkhead and turbocharger parts where then joined together

Image
then the fun really starts
the cockpit parts where stripped of their details
they will be replaced with printed photo etch parts from the eduard set

Image
and the styrene part of the seat was made

Image
the cockpit parts where painted in the same interior green that was used before

Image
once the paint had enough time to set this photo etch fret came in to place

Image
this is the instrument panel with the pe parts
i didn't build the kit version of this but the dials look better then those on the clear film part that is in the kit

Image
then the left hand side panel was next

Image
and the right hand side to finish the panels

Image
i then made the pe seatbelts
they where pretty easy to make
the last time i made after market seatbelts they where the eduard fabric kind wich took me a long time to make
these are a little less detailed but still look nice
and they where ready to use in about 30 minutes

Image
they where then glued to the seat
the belt where i bit of a handfull to get on there
this is because of the pe wich is a bit stiff so it needed a fair amount of bending and folding before they would stay in place

Image
then a clear coat of Vallejo satin varnish
and then mig prod. dark wash
and to finish it off a coat of Vallejo matte varnish

Image
Image
Image
and some clse ups of the cockpit panels

Image
the cockpit tub was then glued together and test fitted onto the turbocharger unit

Image
and a testfit in the fuselage

Image
i then drilled some holes in the back of the instrument panel
this will be to add some wires
i think this will be visible once everything is build up so i will add some wires as extra detail

Image
the instrument panel in place

Image
i made the wires with 00.2 mm metal wire
they where then painted with Vallejo modelcolor deep yellow and vermillion
i doubt that these are the correct colors but i didn't find a clear and colred photo of the real thing so after watching aircrash investigations i noticed they use a lot of red and yellow wires on instruments so i just copied that

and that is all i have for now
i already finished the engine but if i showed that too in this post it would become really long
so i hope you like it so far
thanks for stopping by and untill next time
cheers, Mark

Thank you very much Scott
Glad you like it so far
The fuselage halfs are joined by now
And the backpiece with the front part of the tail aswell but i noticed that the fit in some places in not all that good
Wich means a lot of sanding recribing and drilling new holes for the rivets
Something i never done before but i have the tools for it and watched a few videos about so i know what i am getting into
And the cowling won't fit properly so i will have to glue that in place wich wasn't part of my plan
I will need make a ring on the front of the fuselage to extend it .5 mm
But maybe it will be strong enough and i don't need to glue the cowling
But i didn't start that yet so i will have to see how that works out
Cheers , Mark

Thank you very much Patrick
It is a bit of a shame the exterior needs a lot of work
There are a few bad fits so i need to practice my recribing and rivet making before i can really go ahead with it
I did start the gunbays but those are a big part of the entire build so they will.take some time aswell
But thanks.for.the comment

Thank you very much Frans
And it didn't take that long at all
I could have painted them before i glued them in and save me the trouble of painting them after glueing bit i think it took about 10 minutes
It is lead wire so it needs ca glue to stick and i drilled holes so i just dropped in some glue and pushed 2 wires in each hole and left them to dry for about an hour
But i lost a bit of mojo on this build
Nothing serious but i was bummed about the bad fit of the cowling and the rear of the fuselage
So i started a Leopard for the Homeland gb in the mean time but that is going fast so i will get back to this soon and i still need to make a update for the engine wich i think i will do tonight or tomorrow
Thanks for stopping by

hi guys
so time for another update
i keep forgetting to make this
i want to do this update on the engine wich by now is kind of finished for about a week already
although there are still a few minor things i can do i want to get the fit on the fuselage right before i add the 2 last details to the engine
and those are placed on the front so i will be able to reach them when i get to adding them

so lets go to the pictures shall we

Image
this was the engine before i started painting it
the detail is okay but after looking at some pictures of real R2800 engines i did find soem things missing
wich i will show later on in this update

Image
to get started with the painting i sprayed a coat of gloss black base from alclad
then once that was dry i used alclads polished aluminium for the push rod tubes
the cylinders them selves where painted with aclad aluminium
you can easily see the color difference between the 2 shades of aluminium here
i did see some pictures where they where in a aluminium color but most restored engines had them in black but i like this look better so i kept it like this

Image
the exhaust pipes where painted with 3 shades of rust color from ammo
i only thinned the base color wich is old rust '
then i spayed dark rust and medium rust on there
they wheren't thinned because i wanted to try splattering them
this gives small spots/ dots of paint on the parts wich also look very random
and then i played with the coverage a bit to get some tonal variation on the entire exhaust
the air intake tubes are painted in polished aluminium from alclad

Image
the front and back parts of the engine where painted in neatral grey from Vallejo while the ends where painted with black and then i dry brushed them with german grey (both Vallejo)
the supports for the engine are in aluminium
the front of the engine was given a wash with mig productions dark wash to make the details around the prop shaft a bit more visible

Image
a better view of that part
i am sorry to say i have no idea what this thing is called so i just call it the front of the engine

Image
i then drilled holes in the front and back of each cylinder and placed a lead wire in them
these will serves as the spark plug wires wich are not in the kit
i also added some engine oil stains from AK to add a bit of detail to them but that is hard to see in all the photo's

Image
the lead wire is easy to shape the way you want so shaping them around the cylinders was easy and took just a small amount of time
they where painted with Vallejo modelcolor middlestone before i bend them to make sure i don't spill paint on the metal colored parts

Image
i then joined the 2 rows of cylinders together
the wires for the back row where pulled through the plate that devides the 2 rows
they will be pulled in between the front cylinders to finish this step

Image
the last parts where then added

Image
from the side
the fit is very good but with all those pipes and wires it is a bit busy
the exhaust where supossed to be painted aluminium instead of the rust i used
but as you can see this gives a bit more variation and as far as i know they didn't use aluminium for the exhaust because of the heat these huge engines produce
but i am the opposite of a expert so i could just as well be completly wrong

Image
and the back
this will be hidden from view later :wall:

Image
just to give an idea of how it looks when the engine is in it's place

Image
i think i have shown this before but these are all the internals inside the fuselage

and that is how i made the engine
i have a few placards that i still need to add but those can wait
i was a bit bummed out that the cowling doesn't fit yet but i have a plan for that
it can be done now but that would mean i need to glue the cowling on there and i want to be able to remove it to show off the engine
and there was this part to form the back and tail wich doesn't fit all that great so i need to sand that smooth on the edges and rescribe the details
but i never done that so i am practicing on some scrap pieces of styrene before i mess up the kit

i am planning to build the wings and the gun bay kit first though because i want to see if there are more places that need sanding, filling and scribing
so if that is needed all of that work can be done at 1 time instead of repeating the proces a few times

so that is it for today
thanks for stopping by and having a look
untill next time and happy modelling
cheers , Mark

Really neat build, despite the issues with the cowling. That side view is awesome, makes me think of a cut-a-way build. Too bad all that plumbing will be covered up.

Thank you very much Jon
Yeah a bit of a shame to cover it all but i don't think i want to cut out panels as i don't think i have the skill set to make those look right
The cowling issue will be solved with a piece of styrene i think
I plan on glueing a strip on the edge of the fuselage and extend it a bit
This way it should all fit and i sanded down the support ring that is on yhe front of the engine wich now needs a bit of paint bit that was a bit too big for the cowling to fit over
But i will work on the wings and the eduard gun bay kit first
Just to make sure everything else will fit
Thanks for stopping by

Thank you very much guys
I'm glad you like it
After a small break for a other build i am back in this and started the gunbays for the wings
Once they are done i can glue the wings on and see if they need filling
I hope not but i think it will needs some
I want to try the molten plastic method with sprue scraps in TET
it should prove to be a better option then putty as that can shrink
So i hope to have enough for a update soon
Cheers

Thank you very much
The updates arw up to the point where the trouble start though
It needs a lot of filling on all the major joints
Nothing was going on smoothly and there are gaps on the wings and steering surfaces
The panels that have the holes for the guns are too small but i decided to sacrifice the few screw detail to make them smooth and the back piece wich leads from the cockpit to the tail doesn't fit either as it is too narrow but i will get some styrene sheet to fill that up and rescribe the details
So all in all a much more intens.build then planned but i still look forward to finishing it and hopefully it will look good

Hi guys
Well my vacation starts today and i thought let's start with some building and get all my buildlogs back up to date
And this is one of them
Allthough i haven't touched it in a while i just saw that i didn't post the build up to the point where it is now

So here is the progres so far
Image
The fuselage was glued together bit this is still a testfitting
As you can see it doesn't fit all that well without some pressure

Image
Then i started to work on the wings
As you can see i removed some walls that are in between the guns as the gun bays will be replaced with a pe upgrade kit

Image
The holes for the rocket mounts where drilled out

Image
Not much to see but the (in the photo) rear wall of the gunbay had to be trimmed down for the pe part
This is still unchanged

Image
Here the part was removed

Image
The pe gunbay walls where glued in place

Image
As you can see it required a lot of clamps to get it closed

Image
Steering surfaces and flaps where build up

Image
The walls that devide the guns where added

Image
The guns received the new aber barrels and the pe for the guns was glued on

Image
The tail was build up

Image
Everything can be moved

Image
The not so good fitting rear of the fuselage
I plan on glueing a styrene sheet on the part that is too narrow and reapply all the rivets on that after i sanded the part smooth

Image then i glued on the wings
A nice and big gap presented itself

Image
The covers of the guns are simply too small
I will try to make them flush with wing with disolved sprue and sand them smooth
I will loose the 8 screws that arw molded in them but atleast it will look better then this

Image
Yet another gap i found

Image
Amd the last gap
The bigger gap in between the other 2 is supossed to be there for the fueltank pylon but the smaller one needs filling

And that is all i have for now
The plan is to fill all the gaps and fix the parts that are too small
And while the filler is drying i will go on with the last parts like the exhausts on the sides and the landing gear
I have planned for a few full days of modelling so i hope to show some more updates soon

Happy modelling and untill next time
Cheers Mark

Well I am still watching this build :pop:
Your skill and the PE use will really make this shine. Such a big beautiful bird
Seeing as how I have no modelling home for a while and packing for a move is boring, I am here to pester everyone!
Glad you are doing a WIP to help me when I get to my messy Revell kit...it is already started and is a major glue bomb
I was thinking about getting a whole new engine from E bay, but it might not fit

Not that you need help, but saw an interesting vid on sealing seam lines ...have a peek

Thank you Scott
The problem where the gaps though
They really need a lot of filling and i am using the disolved sprue in places
The bigger gaps where filled with ca glue as that works a bit faster
I just finished filling everything and now the waiting begins
I hope that it will be dry tomorrow
The last time i used my home made filler (same batch) it took 20 to 24 hours to fully dry and it was just as strong as the styrene i applied it on
I am working on the large parts of photo etch at the moment
They are for the gun bay covers and if it all takes longer i get back to a other build and return to this when everything is dry
Thanks for stopping by

Great work Sir and I admire your application. It really beggars belief that a company can release a kit that has so many things wrong with it and still ask a hefty wedge for it! I built a 1/32 Trumpy 109 recently and it had no fit issues at all so you cant even say they're consistently bad.

They're not even any good at being rubbish!

That said, your work is superb and I reckon you will succeed despite the kit!
Its been tried and tested, it works! So don't blame the system if you're no good.

Good thing i didn't pay full prixe for it
Maybe my fixing skills could use some improving too though
By now this build is almost painted and i am working on the final bits like the gun bays and everything that fits in there
The landing gear is coming along aswell
Once all those bits are done i will make a new update

Yikes.

Lots of gaps.

I have the razorback version of this kit and i hope it won't be as bad a fit.

I think it is the same for most part unless the fuselage around the cockpit is really different from this one
The back part wich goes from the cockpit to the tail was seperate so i think they use the same fuselage halfs
But they are filled by now so i don't have to worry about that anymore
If you use am gunbarrels make sure you testfit them though
I couldn't get mine through the holes as they where too small

hi guys
time or a update for this build
i have been showing several progres photo's on the ISM facebook page already but i still want to finish this buildlog aswell
so here is the next bit for this build
i seem to have forgotten to make photo's of the fixes and corrections i have made so i can't show you that but it was rather boring anyway
for the back of the fuselage i glued on a sheet of styrene wich i had cut to the rough shape required
this was then sanded down untill it conformed to the shape of the fuselage
all the other gaps where filled with molten sprue

but here is the progres so far
Image
here all the gaps and parts that where giving problems where fixed
the cowling is a clear part and was primed with black primer so that is why it is the only colored part so far
i also used a eduard masking set for the canopy

Image
as this was one of the first times i used alclad paint it was almost expected that i would run into a problem
this was posted on the fb page and i received several replies with awnsers about what it could be that i did wrong
the problem was most likely too much paint at once wich creates this gritty effect on the surface
i sanded the affected spots down to the black primer again and ended up repainting the entire plane
the first color i used was polished alumium and allthough i followed the instructions on the bottle i didn't like the effect it gives

Image
so after the sanding i used the white aluminium from alclad
i have to say i am impressed with the paint
you can't find a single metal flake in the paint and it sprays great

Image
the entire plane in it's white aluminium finish

Image
then the real fun began
all the masking was done with narrow (2mm) and wide (50mm) masking tape and a lt of masking film wich i wanted to try
it works but is very low tac so it can be pulled of even if you don't want to

Image
at this point i painted the white for the invasion stripes and the olive drab anti glare strip on the fuselage
the white has already been masked to paint the black stripes later
the red band around the cowling was masked and painted red
i used mr hobby aqueous paints for this
after the last colrs where added i left that to dry and started to work on other parts of this build

Image
like the guns
the barrels and ammo link chutes where painted with the same white aluminium as the rest of the plane
the actual gun was brushpainted with mr metal dark iron and slightly buffed to highlight the raised details

Image
the guns where fitted after i drilled out the holes for the barrels wich didn't fit at first and in the proces of trying to fit them i damaged the paint on 1 of the guns ,so that had to be re painted aswell

Image
the wheels for the landing gear where assembled
i didn't paint the tyres as i kind of like the rubber color they have so i don't see a reason to paint them
they all had a raised rim inside wich was blocking the wheel so i had to cut that out to make room for the wheel and Ensure it would fit properly

Image
and just before Paul made his how to paint propblades vid i finished this
but after watching that i found out i use the same method to paint these

Image
a close up of the rather packed gun bay
and the parts that lead the ammobelts into the guns are not even added

Image
luckely the engine is still visible
i would have felt really bad if all that work would be completly hidden as i actually was a bit proud of the engine
i never made a engine that i liked as much as this one

Image
just as a progres shot
i added the prop and canopy to see how it would all look
right after this i dropped the canopy and the pointy end on the rear snapped to feed the carpet monster
it was just a little snack though and it is hard to see if you don't know it is missing

Image
the bottom of the plane

Image
the fit of the canopy is a bit bad
but i was planning to have it open anyway

Image
here is something for the PE lovers
all the ammo had to be bend to make a 3d effect instead of a flat pointy thing

Image
the paints i used for the ammo
the Vallejo paints are not very well known i think as i rafrely see them in shops
they are alcohol based , dry very fast and need to stay clear from water as they can actually rust

Image
a photo of the front
the HVAR rockets are painted with olive drab for the fins and warhead the centre is painted with barley grey wich can be seen on RAF fighters like the Lightning and Phantom
i searched for a color photo's of the these rockets from the time they where used but only found black and white pics
after looking at some pics of big rc planes i found a site that mentionned that this was a common color for these rockets
they say olive drab and grey though, i just like the barley grey so i used that
the bombs are in olive drab with a bit of chrome silver on the detontor fuse

Image
all the .50 cal rounds
it is not accurate though :shifty:
i wasn't going to get 2400 rounds to fill these storage places it woyuld be overkill to do that and we encounter rivet counters in our hobby not ammo counters

Image
from above

Image
the side

Image
the navigation or id lights
i'm not really sure what they are for

Image
i added a antenna wire made from strechted sprue and painted that with some chrome silver from mr hobby

and that is all i have for now
the plane is ready for some aqua gloss and then decals wich could be a problem as not all the star and bars decals are pre cut to fit the lights and open gun bay hatches
i will go on with this build once i finished my etry into the homeland gb wich is almost over
so thanks for watching and un till next time
stay safe and happy modelling
cheers Mark

Thank you very much guys
I am glad to see you like it
And happy this build is coming to an end
The kit is not as good as i thought it would be and that took some of the fun out of building it
I will try to gloss coat it tonight when i finished my homeland gb entry wich is nearly done and then start the decals tomorrow

Well then
Time for the last update of this build as it is finished
Last time it was ready for the decals so let's start there
Image
I seem to lost the pics of the decals somewhere
I know i have them as i posted them on fb but i can't find them right now
So after the decals i gloss coated the Jug a second time
This was followed by a wash with Ultimate dark dirt wash

Image
Once the wash was whiped off (i kept it rather dirty) i placed the HVAR's and bombs

Image
Some soot stains where added with mig prod. black smoke pigments

Image
And the same pigments where used on the guns and for some stains leasing up the wing

And then i called it quits
I think it is done at this point as there is nothing more i want to add to it
As for the kit i wouldn't recommend it
There where too many bad fits at major points like the fuselage and wingroots

On the other hand the cockpit is nice and the engine was better then i expected
Allthough i did some scratch building to make it more detailed

So with my reflection of the kit out of the way
Here are the final reveal photo's

And some detail / close up shots

And that is all folks
It defently was a build with ups and downs but in the end i am pretty happy with the result
It could have been better but when it comes to planes i have a lot to learn
I build about 6 planes so far since i moved over to armor 11 years ago
But i feel they are getting better so that is a good thing and this was the first bare metal finish i did in a very long time

So i hope you like it
And thanks for stopping by
Happy modelling
Cheers , Mark

Yup. She's gorgeous mate. Hope the build wasn't too much of a Mojo killer.

I've just acquired a 1/48 Tamiya Razorback Jug and your build has made me want to dive in.

Thank you Andy and Will
Your comments are greatly apreciated and i am glad you like it

It had been there long enough
