What's not to love about cuddly Teddy Bears and a bumbling buffoon...
Both were the added comedy in-fills to break up the fighting/action and lower the PG rating in my opinion.
Kids loved them...

Anyways, back to the build..... Well some infomation about what i'm building first...

Many moons ago, i fell in love with my first Princess..... By 1983 she, in Slave girl costume, was all over my wall..... #cough-cough..#
Enough of that, The girl i really fancied was probably the fastest bucket of bolts in the whole Galaxy...
The Millennium Falcon, she was one cool ride.
I still to this day purchase all my cars around the Falcon's faults and looks....
We have to " get out and push"... Mostly battered and Ugly, i often used to try and "outrun" the local forces, They always break down... and for a while even attracted and carried all the local lonely Princesses about..
Then we had all the YT variants appear, Ebon Hawk, Outrider, Otana... All of these too interested me so i went out and brought myself the Haynes manual.....
Yeah this one....

I'm guessing all you "Real" Star wars fans have this book in your collection??
Along with these old beauties??....

The final 3 have nothing to do with the films but are in fact filled with short stories from the comic collection that run through the "Star wars" years..
The first is a shortened collection of the comic series that came out and run after the first movie was released and became the global Phenomenon that it was..
I did collect these comics, from issue 1, but have lost or had become damaged beyond repair. my collection is slim now..
The opening battle, as seen in the comic and Annual..

Who could ever forget these beautifully drawn scenes from the film eh?...

...and finally...... Yay!!!... Go Luke....

Sorry, got all nostalgic again and started wandering off topic... lol... Hope some of you enjoyed the collection there...

Its a YT-2000 Transport.....

Or this one to all the Star wars gamers out there....

The "Otana" is the Main cargo transport of the Family Azzameen from the popular PC RPG Star wars game "X-Wing Alliance."

Very cool.... Very complicated to build in my usual Braille scale format...
There are others who have built this craft, my all time favourite German Sci-fi builder Stefan Hacker...
His awesome 1/72 scale build can be viewed here..

He has other superb builds and is a regular contributor to the sci-fi site Starship modeller..

Unfortunately my teeny build will be not even a 10th as good as his, my skill set and time and patience are not disciplined enough to create such marvellous masterpieces..

I have started.... Twice.... Once before Christmas then disassembled and made a fresh start a month or so ago... Nothing much just collecting bits and cutting shapes etc...

..and have sketched out the plan..

More work has been done but i think i have flooded the thread enough for today....

Hahaha... Thanks, and yeah Don... too right. My biggest downfall, thinking outside the box all the time....

Should of just spent £10 on a cheap Revell Snap kit and been done with it...

lol...
To be fair though, this build is my shelf queen... Just a little bit too much for my meagre skills to fathom out.
The initial construction will be crude, it'll be the plating over that will add the detail i think.
Another problem i have noticed is i have never seen reference to this thing sitting on any landing gear??
Another obstacle to negotiate... Fingers crossed i reach the finish line and she doesn't end up back gathering dust on the shelf until my skills have gotten better..

On a plus..... "the Force is strong with this one!"..... Or is that "Farce?"... lol...

So i best share a handful of pictures and share my build relationship with the scratch build i just cant make happen!!..

About a year ago i had itchy feet for a new scratch build and wanted it to be a Sci-fi one...
I have built an "AA9" and "London" and "Palomino" and other teeny craft. Also a 2/3 scale R5-D4 and a Gonk droid.... even a partly built 2/3 scale K-9 Mk1.

All of the above are PC Cases and house a computer capable of playing "old skool" Star Wars games, which leads us to this build..

I have never created a Video game Sci-fi build.
I made plans to build either the Otana or the Outrider in "Corgi" toy scale... The Otana won... and got slightly BIGGER...

So after planning and collecting i started to build it late last year..... then realised the entire shape of the main central area was to low and sloped too shallow and broke it all up again...
Here is last years beginnings..

....and dismantling.....

saving the Main body and mandible shaped pieces i started again....

...and all the extra collected rubbish for the build....

Messing around with the bits i remade the central cockpit corridor...

...also recreating the Central hull section making it higher and less sloped..

Cut outs for the inserts included...

..and i will be using slithers of 5mm PVC trim to give clearance for the sides. These 5mm pieces are used on the Cockpit corridor as shown in previous images above and on the escape hatch side pieces, to be built...

Okay more to build, more to show.... but I'll save it for another post.
This is gonna get real rough, real quick... but as all my builds do, will hopefully turn out looking about right for the finish..

Hahaha... Thanks Frans, I'm not as confident as you are..... This build has annoyed me since I first started planning and looking at it now I am tempted to start over for a third time.... Its the lining up and being symmetrical and square that is getting too me. Along with creating the curves and teeny details.... Maybe a scrap and restart is on the cards...
We'll see...

As a little model related twist.... One of my first Non WW2 kits built back in the 70's was the old MPC R2-D2 kit....
I found a picture on Google... my kit is sadly no more...

Back with another Otana update...
Been picking away at this and the Mossie as they are both sat on my kitchen side annoying the wife..

May bring this entire post bang up to date so i know where i am with it all.... and so will you guys..

....# Lots of Images incoming #....

A quick underside shot of the top..

I cut out some holes for the inserts...

..and using styrene and thin wire..

create the inserts..

These are just slid into position and still need gluing in..

Top hull disks are cut and the gun window holes are cut out...

Using a couple of spare Humbrol paint pots from starter kits i make the cut outs for the glass..

Like so...

Need cleaning up a bit but its okay... The extra bits i cut the dipped circles from are gonna be used too!...
With a couple of styrene inserts themselves....

Any ideas what these will be??

Yep you guessed it.... these escape hatch bits like on the Falcon...

These bits too.... A spot of glue..... A good layer of Epoxy and we have Escape hatch corridor ends..

More 5mm trim inserts to give the spacing...

The side pieces ended up looking like this...

Everything is just placed on for the photo's, nothing is glued until i am happy with the rough construction...
Which brings me back to this picture from above....

notice the holes on the mandibles are not level.... This bugged the life out of me so i had to skin them top and bottom..

Okay.... so onward now they are looking as level as i can get them...
The next problem i can see is the construction of the rear engine pieces...

Hmmm......

I decide to make with my 1mm thick styrene some styrene sandwiches....

This shape to start with...

...and this one too!..

I initially make 4 piece sandwiches of both but changed this piece down to a 3 piece to allow for the hull thickness...

Cutting and shaping the odd angles of the rear engine deck...

Once happy with the size and angles i glue the 2 sandwiches together and leave to dry....

While drying i crack on with the next part of the rear engines...

...and this is just how big the thing is at the moment.....

That's your lot guys.... Bang up to date....
Rough construction is coming along now, "Rough" being the operative word.. lol...

There is only maybe a couple or 3 hours of actual work to this point. My paper templates and workings out from the early idea stages has help. Also my knack of turning rubbish and odds and sods into viable pieces speeds the process too....
I mentioned in my "Solar Car" scratch build 2 years ago that you start and look and see regular trash and recyclable materials in a whole new way when you rough build on the fly like this... gets all the imagination and construction idea cogs turning in the old head...
For now, like most of my builds.... she will look like junk, by the end hopefully if all goes well, she'll come out looking like a teeny Otana..

Hey Antonio, thanks as always for your kind, positive comments. I really do appreciate them my friend.. As for "real modelling".... you guys are the real modellers, I just try to make do with what poor quality kits I have hidden in my stash... lol... I need to bring the styrene and Milliput to the build table to get my kits looking like more than just cheap toys... hahaha.....
I enjoy the build process... from flat styrene sheet and recycled junk..... to a recognisable piece of Sci-fi hardware...
It becomes my own unique, personal build..... One of a kind..... Well according to internet searches it'll be only the 3rd ever built of this Star Wars craft.. 1 being a 3d print off of a meshed build ... Oh and a Papercraft one that is still under construction but has been on hold for like 2 years...

Hahaha...... Canadian Border control is on high alert in case i ever try and visit.....
I waste far too much valuable recycling materials trying to create crazy contraptions..... hahaha..

"Trying" being the operative word!.. lol...

Once the shape looks about right i will hit it with some filler then skin it with the Armour plating and details to hopefully hide the imperfections....
This is all... of course..... as long as i get that far... Everytime i trim the Styrene i have to spend ages trying to get the little off cuts out of Evie-mai's mouth..... She's under my feet all the time looking for tasty bits dropped....

Oh well.... good job i still got a while yet eh?....
Time to work on another build or two to keep the creative juices flowing....

WOW!...... Been a few weeks since i last shared anything on the Otana build... Sorry guys!..

...and Mike, just noticed your final comment above... damn dude, was that after the trek through the digestive tract or just fallen in and got kinda lost in the nappy?? Hoping for the latter...

Anyway..... still picking away at this build... Struggling to stay focused as has been the problem since i thought about building it...
I want the build, i can even see the build in my head, the progression and final piece.... Alas the actual process is quite challenging. Lots of angles and shapes, many greeblies and again all scratchbuilt or reclaimed from other recycled goods.The obvious problem is this is all fictional and can only be seen in a video game.No real images or drawings or actual screen footage to use for reference.
On a plus, this hindrance can also be used as an advantage..... NO rivet counters..meaning i can improvise the build or miss out details.. lol...

The entire construction is still in the "Ugly" stage.... All the hidden framework and bad cuts are still very visible as i am hoping the Armour plating "skinning" will hide all the miss cuts and glue bombs...

Back last time, we made cardboard templates to get the shapes for these....

When built make these bits..

Some detail bits were made from 0.5 mm styrene. I will be skinning the build with this thickness and am currently using 1mm for construction..

Quick flip over to the gun port glass...

Still along way to go......

Scale reference....

Trying to decide on the engine grills....

Greeblie time X2 for the panels..

... and primed to show detail...

Quick black coat in the gun ports...

Started gap filling....

Then detailing the escape pod corridors..

Got 4 of these to do....

Bottom finished...

2-Pac Epoxy mix for the Escape pod ends..

... and repeat the process for the top escape pod corridor..

Starting to crudely construct the inner mandible walls..

So these walls are still to have greeblies added for detailing. Lets build the rear engine part....

Continuing with some wall construction and creating the detailed area in the holes in the mandibles...

These are not fixed in place yet as again greeblies need to be added.....

So thats your lot for this month..... Time is ticking by and progress is slow... Hopefully next time all rough construction will be complete and i can start and plate up the pieces....
The main neck/corridor to the cockpit is, along with the actual cockpit, my biggest worry. Its complex and needs curved glass and Falcon type framework with a view to the 2 pilot seats and controls....

Should of built a snap kit i know!.... lol

Thanks Nev, working without any plans is a real brain drain...
To plan the next step and not get ahead of myself is crazy, i.e:- I could glue the 2 halves together but then struggle with greeblies and attaching the neck etc.. but it would progress quicker if i could just join the bits... if you get what i mean...

Nearly greeblie and plating time.... then we should start and see progression..

As i just mentioned to Nev above, this build is a drain this time. I have wanted to build it for so long but the curves and angles etc... beat me down.. lol..
I'll keep picking away at it till its complete.. To top it all off my scratchbuilding eye is wandering again and i am fancying starting something fresh but equally as challenging... Star Wars based again too!... Must resist the temptation!..

Bags of time yet though!... Getting a little brain drained and Mojo is flagging but everyday i have a new idea or spot something to help with the build...
Working from inside the old head from blurred images from an ageing PC game is something an amateur like me shouldn't really take on.. but i love the Falcon and all freighters based upon that design..
Cockpits gonna be a challenge...

Okay Guys Sorry... Like the "Mossie Bites" build i too have neglected this thread of late in favour of a YouTube GB..
....But I'm back now, and as with the Mossie build i too have been picking away slowly at this in my spare time...
Nothing much but it is progress....

Small flood of images and ramblings to follow..

Okay so in the holes in the front mandibles a small area of detail is needed both top and bottom....

... and glued in place..

Continued to build up the side walls, these will need detailing at a later date...

Test fit..

Now my hardest piece to scratch build is the neck and cockpit parts... Well i think i found the required recycled parts...

This was a thin disposable icing piping end for a ready made tube of decorative icing. I cut the end square, inserted a smaller sleeve to slot inside the other pvc pipe and we are half way there...

Milliput and styrene to start and detail...

Filled some gaps with the left over milliput..

... and this is how the piece will eventually fit with the main hull shape...

Well that's the idea for now anyway... Still detailing and armour plating etc.. to do... Every part is a brainstorm and a headache. No parts are the same and every part i build has to be removable until i know where and how it will eventually fit together...
So... short and sweet guys but i am back picking away at this... Only about 3 months left...

This build has died a death on the forum now but I'll keep picking away at it just like the Mosquito build.
I have started to skin the neck/corridor to the cockpit today, nothing special just keeping my fingers busy while watching the Star Trek marathon on SyFy channel here in the UK.
Will see what progress I can get done over the next month, hopefully most of the skinning/armour plating..

I mean, the cockpit couldn't be lit its just too small and not detailed....

...But the engines??

In Blue....

I mean...... Erm.... I could maybe do this... Somehow!!...

...BUT.... I dunno??.... Lots of extra work and messing about....
I will think about it...

Been busy starting to skin the cockpit corridor for now...

4mm wide strips..

Glued and clamped..

Well.... I suppose i gotta stick it on some type of rod in "flight mode" as i haven't found any reference anywhere as to where or how a landing gear sits in this thing. I'm guessing like the X-Wing, 3 leg config. The front extending from the main Cockpit corridor maybe... Who knows??
..But that being the case... "In Flight" gives me the option to run a couple of wires into the main hull to ignite the engines a nice blue....
LED boxing already started......

Gonna line it in Aluminium foil to block the light and reflect it out the Engine grill.
I'm thinking 6 Blue LED's should do it..
