JAS-39C Gripen, Revell 1/72, Swedish airforce

Post by patrickroos »

Our Swedish equivalent of the F-16, Eurofighter, Rafale, MiG-29
If You ask me the best comparison to Gripen C are the later versions of the F-16.
The Gripen is a multi role aircraft and the Swedish designation is JAS-39 J=Jakt (Fighter) A=Attack S=Spaning (Recon)
Here in Sweden its simply known as "JAS".
Internationally its called Gripen.
I think You are all quite familiar with the Gripen. Now in use with the Swedish, Hungarian, Czech, South African, Thai and soon Brazilian air forces.
The new version is called Gripen NG (Next Gen), it will be designated Gripen E/F and according to plan it will fly in 2018.
The version in use now is the Gripen C (single seater) and D (Twin seater). Its a gen 4-ish fighter, I would say 4,49... :D
The SwAF has about 100-120 whereof about 60 are operational.
All essential info in the Gripen can be found here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_JAS_39_Gripen
If You want more:
http://saab.com/air/gripen-fighter-syst ... en/gripen/

Cockpit
Image

The C/D versions are fully adopted to NATO standards.
Image

Multi role and very versatile, although it excels as a fighter being a light and very manoeuvrable aircraft.
Image

Gripen is a STOL aircraft and has amazingly short takoff and landing capabilities. The canards are used as airbrakes at landing.
Image

Gripen C and D
Image

I will be doing this scheme, the standard SwAF one, here one C and one D taxi out at Red Flag.
Image

The kit is the new (late 2014) Revell 1/72 SAAB JAS-39C Gripen.
Image

Three bags, all in all 5 sprues including the clear parts.
Image

For Revell, being 1/72 the detail level is quite ok, some flash and burring is included as always.
(Revell always throws this in as a bonus, free of charge! :th: )
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

A nice feature is that You get a full load of missiles and "drop" = extra tank. (thank you Revell)
Top to bottom, AMRAAM, Iris-T, Sidewinder.
Image

One thing Revell has finally learned is how to make nice clear parts! They are very nice.
Image

Image

The usual confusion...
Image

The highlight of this kit are the decals, really nice! (as usual in all modern Revell kits)
This one is not made by Cartograf though, its a Czech company called Syhart Decal.
Image

Looking at the parts its clear a two seater is in the making.
So the way this goes together means gap, filler, sanding, swearing and re-scribing... :wall:
:D
Image

I have to be realistic, will never finish the P-51 with resin, PE, all metal in time...so choose this instead.
Will build it straight out of the box! :th:
Image

Will start within the next few days. :cheers2:

Nice with more Swedish! Even if I'm not a big fan of the JAS. But that probably have something to do with my first impression of it, being 9 years old and standing something like 700 meters away from the crash site at Vattenfestivalen in 1993. Amazing that only one person got injured in that crash.

But hopefully yours will meet a better fate. :th:

Thanks Jon! Will try not to stall it.... :D
Yeah that display was really stupid...way to early in development.
Classic example of when political and financial interests compromises security and risk thinking.
Listen to the P3 dokumentär on JAS, very good!

Yeah, thats an excellent choice!

I really liked building that kit. But Revell sure provides a lot of "entertainment" for the money...

The instructions are insane... Remember that now - LOL :

Good luck with the build - I'm sure that you will ROCK IT! :thumb2: 8-)

What? There are instructions included?!! :o :o
All I got with mine are some confusing drawings that looks like they are made by hand and perhaps even by a child! :ooops:
:D

Just had a closer look and test fitted some parts...seems pretty ok!

Yepp, I had a good look at Yours and that's what inspired me to do this one instead.
You did a cracking job with Yours, really nice work mate!

Micro JAS, Update 1

Ok, got started tonight... :th:
Image

"Built" the cockpit and the seat. Just a few parts, should have taken 10mins, but the parts are very flashy and a little miss moulded/burring.
I so not like this, cleaning up these miniscule parts really tests You patience to the limit! :ooops:
Ok, there is a nice little decal for the IP, cool, until I discovered that the IP is to small for the decal... :wtf:
So had to re-build the IP to make it bigger. All fine but took some test fitting to make sure the "roof" that goes on top and everything would still line up and fit.

Nice little IP decal...
Image

That now fits to the enlarged IP...
Image

Other than that, I just did the tanks, took of and started to clean up parts, test fitted and fiddled around to get a feel for how it all goes together.

Old Revell trick, Create Your own hatches! :th:
(Come on Revell, its a 2014 release!)
Image

Discovered that the injection points left "canals" in the moulding.
Image

All parts has this kind of minimal (irritating) flash, my eyes hurt from cleaning all these small parts. :ooops:
Image

Installed the main wheel bays, and well (funny), feels like I'm on all parts at the same time!
Basically I'm just trying to get as many parts as possible ready for painting in one go...

It looks much like my kit, with regards to moulding artefacts... same story with the flash and burr. I remeber that I had material missing in the wheels as well, but it where on the inside so I didn't bother to fix it

Vacation!!!  :cheers2: :cheers2:  :thumb2:
And finally some build time...
Had to read my own thread here to understand were I left off...

Started to research how to paint this and future Gripens...not easy.
For each build thread I read, there are different colors used.
The reason is simple, modern camo colors are developed through years and millions of research.
They shift with the lighting, the Gripen is no exception, it shifts from blueish tones, to cold grey tones, to warm browning grey tones etc.
Modelling Swedish planes is always a challenge when it comes to painting, since no Swedish colors exist in any model paint range.
Image

I think I have decided on mixing some colors to at least experiment with.
Image

The book in the background is this one if anyone is interested.
It comes with a comprehensive decal sheet for 10 different Gripens A/B/C/D from several nations.
Its available in 1/72 and 1/48
Image

This one is for 1/48 and intended for this future Gripen build...
Image

Ok, back to mini JAS
I have now built all weapons, tanks and pod, also prepped all parts ready for paint.
Image

I have painted some black parts, and the cockpit is done, I kept it pretty basic. Just OOB paint, decal IP, some wash and some dry brushing.
In this pic some test fitting. 97% of the time spent so far on this build is cleaning and mending every single part and test fitting.
This is a kit that kind of get on your nerves, since it feels like a lot of work and no progress... :wall:
Image

Anyways after x nr of coffee and beers this is where I am now...
Image

Will need a lot of TLC before this kit looks like a nice little Gripen!

Gripens flaps are drooped when parked/off.
Image

I will replicate this on the kit. The kit has the ailerons and flaps in one, but quite easy to split them.
Image

The TE needed some filling since there is no gap on the real flaps.
Image

Then there is the airbrakes...which I will have shut.
Oh boy, the kit says optional open/shut. In reality, naa
Open Yes, shut...not really.
Spent some time sanding and test fitting over and over and ended up with this. (un touched parts does NOT fit at all)
Left side quite ok.
Image

Right side will need some attention.
Image

Image

There is a groove to guide the nose cone in place, it does the opposite, will remove it and hopefully achieve a nice fit.
Next some nose weight.

Great job on the airbrakes.
Remember now that I spent a lot of time dryfitting them, after 512 adjustments I lost patience and just glued them in

Thanks guys!! :th:

When You look at a Gripen one of the most distinctive features of the upper fuse is the one big fin.
Image

The kit one is a little tiny...so made a new one more to scale. Also Revell has it placed way to far front.
Image

Ok, all built now minus the antennas/fins. Filling, sanding and re-scribing done.
Just some final tidy up and then the canopy goes on, and then...finally the painting!! :th:

Fantastic progress in the build - it looks really great! :thumb2: :thumb2:

You handled all the difficult gaps and seams like a boss!

I remember how muck I struggled with the airbrakes, seams between the middle fuselage and the front and back, not to mention the air intakes.... Geez, thinking of it, I had loads of trouble with everything :wall:

Great job sofar, can't wait to see it painted!

Thanks Tommy!

To be totally honest, this kit is terrible...the effort involved to try and fix Revells amazing quality on this 1/72 kit would have built two Eduard or Tamiya 1/48 kits by now... :ooops: But more on that when done.
My advice to all reading this thread, If Your not hellbent on building a 1/72 Gripen, stay away from this kit! :hand:
The only thing preventing me from permanently parking it in the round hangar is the fact that its a Gripen!
An aircraft I really like and am proud of. (being Swedish)
Worst part done, now looking forward to the final and fun parts! :th:

Ok back from vacation
Started again yesterday. Cleaned up the model as in polished out glue marks and so on.
Then the HUD pinged off never to be found again... :wall:
So made a new one from a thinner transparent plastic, just dipped it in green wash and glued it in.
Also attached the nose tip and AA probe tube (one piece). Tried to sand down the tube and get it in the right angle.
Image

Also masked up the canopy...after polishing it to an inch of its life...result was ok, but quality of clear parts are not impressive.

Canopy on...
Back part had a very good fit. Front part have an alignment pin up front, remove it and it the fit is great.
Also put some wash on the front cockpit cover before closing her up.
Image

Well starting to look like a Gripen now, I think the canopy is to "flat" but ok, looks fine anyway.
Image

Next...checking seams, painting cockpit and then priming.

OK, so debated with myself over antennas...
Firstly I decided to make new ones, the ones provided looked a little crude for my taste.
Secondly, put them on now (and with great certainty break some of) or after paint...
I opted to put them on now.

The smallest ones are fiddly little buggers!

As usual, really nice job so far Patrick! These Revell kits can be pain in the... but still some of them go together really nicely.

Gripen is one of the most beautiful jets in the world. Period. Really looking forward seeing this finished.

(I've recently read that Gripen is a strong candidate to replace F-18 in Finnish air force in the future. :th: We'll see.)

Latest figures I saw You get 4 Gripen E for each F35...When Brazil procured the Gripen their investigations showed that it costs 3 times more per flight hour to operate the F/A18 or the Rafale. To me at least it seems unrealistic that small countries like Norway, Finland, Netherlands etc will afford the F35, at least Sweden could not, we are a small country with a small defence budget.

You are currently upgrading Your Hornets (mid life upgrade) and in 2020-2025 they will start to be replaced, the Finnish Hornets will fly until 2030.
Finland is in a good position I think. By then the F35 will be in active service since a few years and the real costs will be known, also the price might come down. And the same goes for the Gripen E, supposed to be in the air for testing 2017.

So, yes maybe Finland will mount Swedish planes again! :cheers2:

Its not that bad, Its just irritating...Its 2015 and Revell being one of the big ones they should be able to do better I think.
To me its not acceptable spending half the time cleaning up every single part from burring and flash to make them fit properly, not on a brand new 2015 tooling, and not in this day and age. 30 years ago it was considered ok, not anymore.
If Tamiya, Meng, GWH, Eduard and others can do it consistently so should Revell, Airfix and Trumpeter/HobyBoss.
Heck even small manufacturers can do it. I recently bought 8 1/72 Bf109 kits from AZhobby in one batch. Not a single miss moulding, burring or flash on any of them...
Ok, end of rant!!! :D :shhh:

Ah, cool. Then Your the guy to ask about the actual colour of the missiles and the correct colour of the marking bands on them!?
This is always shrouded in mystery!

:cheers2: :cheers2:

OK, finally at the spray bay!
I used gloss black to check the seams since I used it to prime the exhaust.
Holy cra...gloss black is revealing! :eeek:
Found some minor stuff in need of filler, now done. :th:
Next, priming everything.

To my knowledge the American missiles both BLIND , SIM or live are painted exactly like stock although ive never handled live AMRAAMs or winders , the all green paint for BLIND and SIM used in the 70s and 80s where gone when i did my service 02-03.
We expended a few RB-75 (AGM-65) , stock color scheme but i fail to remember if there was Swedish text on the missile , but i don´t think RB-75 is integrated for C/D anyway. RB-15F and BK-90 should be painted the same colors both blind and live except for the color of the band

As for bands Sweden doesnt seem to conform to NATO standard with 3 bands but only use 1 , green for BLIND or SIM and yellow for live , although the only live round ive seen is RB-75.

In normal training flight usually a RB-74 SIM was carried on one wingtip rail and a BLIND on the other as a counterweight , the wings usually wasnt fitted to the missiles to make them aerodynamically dead to greatly increase the service intervals on the missile itself , if wings where fitted for added coolness factor they lacked the gyros on the rear wings. If a RB-75 SIM was to be used the BLIND 74 was removed and the 75 was mounted on the inner pylon on the wing opposite to the RB-74 SIM , sadly i dont remember which side the SIM winder usually was mounted.

Ok, back to the little Gripen, only two weeks left now! :o
Cool, I will make it... :D

Soo, have been waiting for the Badger StyNylRez primer to arrive.
This product has been so praised : that I was super exited to try it.

Started by throwing in some stainless steel BBs, I do this in anything in need of mixing.
Image

Next I switched to 0,4mm needle in my Evo, since Badger says this works best. (all though I have seen tests w 0,2 and no prob)
Took my test piece and HOLY CRAP!! guys...this stuff is Magic!
The self levelling qualities are insane...I built it up in layers, and I just blasted it on...did not matter, PERFECT result either way.
And, after just blow drying with the airbrush, its fully handle able and totally touch dry. (you cant press and hold long but still)
Image

I just cannot get over how it self levels so quick and perfect...amazing stuff.
There is a small draw back to this though, it builds on the tip very easy, but a blast of air before each round and also cleaning w cotton bud and Your fine.
Its very fine grain and leaves a wonderful smooth surface.
Image

So, without further hesitation I filled up and primed everything, Love the result, and Love this stuff!
Image

Image

Image

Ok, this is what I normally use...
Image

This is what I will swear by and ONLY use from now on!! Trust me this stuff is amazing... :th: :th:  :pistols:
Image

StyNylRez primer is amazing,, I really like.. you can't screw up with it... it even fills in scratches and such so much better then other primer. If you do not have it yet.. what are you waiting for...Get it !! ...it puts all other primers to shame,,, not even in the same league.

Gripen is Great ! too

Well yes...but Alclad primer is also good, but the thing with Badger primer is that it is so forgiving. Fool proof! :th:
You can not fail, just blast it on in any way and the result is perfect.
Amazing stuff!

Moving along with the little "Grippen" as they say in the UK

Painted the white stuff (the real color is some strange greyish off white)
Image

And did the pre shading, used NATO black since its a little more toned down.

PS
One drawback w the Badger super duper primer, its grey color, its on the verge of being to dark.
Heard some rumors saying Badger is to release more colors. Hopefully a lighter grey or white.

Nice build till now! Keep up the good work, 8 days left!
Hungary also has Grippens, and I plan to build one. I'll definitely check back to this topic. :-)

If You want to do a nice build, and choose this kit, just be prepared for lots of extra and time consuming cleanup work!
Because of this, I would rec. the extra work spent on building the Italeri or better KittyHawk 1/48 Gripen kits instead.

Thanks, yes 8 days to go! :th:

Finally, painting!!

Ok painting a SAAB Gripen...I have been spending lots of time trying to understand what colours to use.
Why? I have a lot of Gripens to build
Have looked at, what feels like, every build thread in the web. :ooops:
There is NO standard formula, everyone has different choices of paints, colours and in many cases colour mixes.

However two of my friends are working in the SwAF and have access to the original paint...will progress this with the hope of some original colour samples/chips.

Challenge with modern airplane camo colors is that millions are spent researching them.
This means that they are generally good camo wise of course, as in changing with the light. In bright light they look light, and in poor light conditions they go darker...Also depending on light and visibility conditions they change in tone from grey to blue, and from warm to cold.
For us modellers, this means we have to find some half decent compromise.:

Bright sunlight = Bright colours.
Image

Change the conditions and angle, suddenly much darker...
Image

So decided ok then, I will do the same as everyone else for now and find my own choice! :geek:
The colors are these, here according to NCS:
Image

Said and done I selected potentials and started to compare and check.
Image

Finally I was down to these three, where I found Tamiya XF-54 Dark sea grey to be a good match for the upper colour/darker grey.
And XF-19 Sky grey or Gunze H332 Light aircraft grey to be a good match for the lower colour/lighter grey.
With XF-19 as slight favourite.

Then without hesitation I started to spray!
For the lighter shade I went with XF-19
Image

Image

XF-54 on the upper surfaces
Image

Image

Image

Image

After drying I compared to a bunch of reference pics and was very happy!
So for me, the colour mystery had a very simple solution in the end...two standard Tamiya colours!! :th:

Painting time - Good stuff!

So it's X19 and X54, go figure.... I spent many hours mixing paints and testing on primed sprue before I painted my Gripen
Sometimes the answer is closer than you think...

The Gripen looks gorgeous, it's gonna be a stunner! :thumb2:

Well...if You spend some time with Tamiya, Gunze, Vallejo, Humbrol, etc etc paints.
I'm sure one will find several good alternatives in each paint range.
As usual no right or wrong... :th:
