Tankart 4

Post by burnie43 »

So I have just added the Tankart 4 book to my stash.........it is NOT the same as my other Tankart 1 book....!!!
Tankart 4 should be labeled as an encyclopedia.......!!?? Talk about in depth !
Don't know about you guys but for me, once I get a bit of an idea on weathering I just crack on, too much thought into what I'm doing causes me mega problems and I over think and lose all the enjoyment of painting....so for me....Tankart 4 is for a visual reference only in other words I will look at the pictures and enjoy !!
Cheers

The word ART always put me off even investigating these books. So they are that good and helpful, that you bought another.

I own all four of his books (I plan to buy more of them) and learned quite a bit about working with oils from them. I found them very useful in that regard, but only in at regard.
Michael's skills are in an entirely different universe than my own and it's very difficult for me to relate to a lot of what he manages to achieve visually. I find that's generally the rule with most publications that are availible these days. The skills of the artists that are presenting the "how-to" are so far beyond what most of us have that it's more showing off than education.
What we actually learn only comes through studying thier text and practicing it rather than what we see in the pictures.
Most of us are so adverse to reading these days, thanks to social media, that I worry that this type of learning is fast approaching extinction.
I've yet to see what will replace it... It certainly isn't Facebook, Google+, or any of those "look-at-me" machines. If it is say hello to the idiocracy. :th:

Personally, I think Mike Rinaldi's skills far surpasses that of MiG Jimenez, Adam Wilder, et al. Not saying that these guys aren't good, I just think Mike does indeed think in a whole different level compared to some of these other guys. I've personally communicated with him through email about some of the techniques found in his book and, no kidding, he gave me a lengthier explanation than what I he provided in the book  I think that his background in the arts also plays a big role in how he approaches painting, weather, etc., and how he tries to convey that to us mere mortals (with the exception of Mr. Coen, of course).

I think the other issue is that, with SO MANY "how-to" books out there from so many people, these guys seem to try to out-do each other with each publication.

The problem being of course is that unless it's bigger better faster no one will buy it.

Not sure "encyclopedia" is the word to use here - maybe "dissertation on the art of model painting", or "a treatise on modeling as art."

I was just thinking about this very subject this morning - see that's the thing about this hobby - you have these mechanical / engineering types who buy kits and then get all these PE add-on parts, and even build their own parts - the more complex the build the better. The handyman/tinkerer types who love building stuff and consistently produce a great product. Then you have artist types who really don't want to be anything other than fast at building so they can get to the paint / weathering phases. Of course these are broad generalizations here, but you get the point. A wide group of people are doing this model thing.

Well Rinaldi states early on that he's an artist and you can tell he's studied this stuff - like where he writes about Olive Drab as a color and how it fades overtime was fantastic. As one who doesn't really like building models, and who likes painting them I find his books are great, and for me it was the first time I had discovered a modeler who thought about this hobby in the same way as myself. I own all four of his books and have read each of them several times, and still read select chapters before each project.

I'd disagree with this "he's beyond the skill level of the ordinary modeler" sentiment found in this link thus far. You know, if you ever want to improve your skills in anything you must follow and study the best - otherwise you end up in a giant group think of mediocrities and stagnation. So yes I read them, and yes I try to duplicate what he is doing - it's a two steps forward, one step (or more) backwards process thus far- but his works have vastly improved my own work.

If, on the other hand, you're not the artist type, or don't have an interest in that approach, then yes these books offer some great photos.

Denver, Colorado - well it use to be the greatest city on the earth then the voters here legalized pot - so now it's The Smellist city on the Earth - full of stoned entitlement zombies and the air reeks with skunk weed. When I was in school this state was referred to as Ski Country USA, then we became the Bavaria of America - more breweries here than anywhere in the world except Bavaria, now it's the pot capital of America - just a downward spiral.
