For this GB I will be building the Tamiya 1:35 Russian T -62A tank. This will be my first GB so will be keeping it fairly simple. I have got some Masterclub resin tracks and a very old Airwaves PE set. Other than those I will be pretty much building it oob using the supplied decals.
I also plan on doing a fairly simple dio/base to display it on as part of the GB.

First parts to be added at the back of the lower hull and for the drive sprockets. These parts fitted really well with not much to clean up after cutting from the sprue.

Airwave photo etched grills. These will replace the grill that comes with the kit and the moulded part.

The PE parts fitted in place with a drop of super glue. One side is slightly of centre but not to noticeable.

The parts fitted, Fairly straight forward to fit.

Next lot of parts for the upper hull. Sides to the tool boxes and guarding around the lights. Also some smaller lights and spare track links. Minimal clean up required on each part.

Managed to break this part in two while trying to clean up after cutting from the sprue. Managed to glue it back together, next time I think I would try and replace parts like this with some brass wire.

Next lot of parts for the upper hull. Lids for the tool boxes and more fuel cans.

The parts fitted. Not had any problems so far everything fitting well. Still got some PE parts left but not sure if I will add them yet.

Lower turret rings. Last two parts to fit to the upper hull.

As with the other parts they fitted in place with no problems. Really enjoying this build so far and going together a lot quicker than I expected

Apart from the PE that's everything fitted on the upper hull section. Next step to make a start on the turret.

First part for the turret is the mounted gun.

The first lot of parts fitted. No problems with any of these parts. Still got the gun, barrel and a few other parts to add to complete the turret.


So thats all on the turret for now, Have ordered a metal barrel to replace the kit one. Should arrive in a couple of days then I can get the turret finished ready for paint.

Really enjoyed the build found it fairly straight forward and no problems with fit. Only small amount of cleaning on parts this was mainly just from what was left after cutting from the sprue. Not a bad kit at all for less than £15 and considering the sprue molds are from the seventies.
Now to have a go at painting.

Last part to build up before painting was the figure. Will be fitting him as per the instructions.

The figure with the arms fixed in place and all cleaned up.

All the parts were primed with Vallejo black surface primer. This was a pig to get to spray but I eventually managed it. I had to shake the living hell out of it and increase the air pressure slightly.

While waiting for the primer to dry I made a start on the tracks. I bought the master club resin tracks to replace the tracks included with the kit.
These are clickable track links and as I found out they are very easy to break. With the outer part broken the links can not lock in place. After breaking a few and finding that they come apart really easy I gave up on them.

These are just a few of the ones I broke. There are no spares in the set so these would have to be hidden.

As the rest of the track came apart really easy when assembled the only way I could use these tracks is if every link is glued together. A bit annoying and seems pointless them clicking together if they have to be glued. Not wanting to go down that route I bought some white metal ones instead. I will use these ones at some point in the future.

These are the white metal ones I got and will be using. Not going to burnish them as I don't want to spend anymore on this build so will be painting them after assembly and before fitting to the tank.

First job was to clean up the links. There was minimal flash to remove on them and did not take to long with a quick swipe with a needle file.

Once that was done I used a 0.55mm drill in a pin vice to clean the holes out for the pins. Another tedious task carried out whilst watching videos on the ISM you tube channel !!

Next job assembling them. They fit together really well and the pins go in with no problems. Not keen on the resin pins as they seem a bit flimsy. Think I would replace these with some steel wire if I did anymore of this type.

First set complete. Broke a few of the pins and lost a couple to the carpet monster. So as you do not get any spare I used a bit of 0.5mm steel wire I had to hand.

Both sets of track built up and ready for painting.

Next up is the painting. After leaving the primer to dry whilst building the tracks for at least a day I started adding the green using the Vallejo Russian green AFV painting set.

First step was painting with the dark green primer as a base.

Second step was adding the Russian green base to all the deep recessed areas and corners.

Next I added the Russian green to all the main areas on the upper sections of the hull and the turret.

Next was to add a lighter shade to the most prominent areas and the raised details.

I used the lightest shade to highlight certain raised areas. Think this is a little to light compared to the rest but will see how it looks when its all done.

The last steps was to cover in mist of the lightest shade thinned to 3:1 ratio all over. Then I painted all the detail parts like the gun, spare track links and tools.


So that's where I am currently up to on the build. Really enjoying it and not 100% sure the colour is correct but its all new to me so not too concerned just want to get the hang of the technique first. Next step will be to paint the figure and then coat with aqua gloss ready for the decals.

So had to wait a few days for my aqua gloss to arrive before I could progress with the build. While I was waiting I made a start on the display base I will put the steps of this being built when I have the tank finished.
So with the aqua gloss having arrived I gave the whole tank a coat ready for decals and weathering.

This was after the aqua gloss and decals were added. Took a bit to get used to spraying the aqua gloss had to play around with the pressure and distance I was spraying at to get it right. Seemed to leave a rough finish at first. The decals where pretty straight forward and I went with the box art ones. The kit contains three sets of decals and seem very well made. These where applied using humbrol decal fix and seemed to go down well with no problems at all.
The next step was to start weathering. I must give a big thank you to Coen for his videos on weathering using clay based washes. I found these very use full and gave me a good idea of what I wanted to try in and the process of doing it.


First step of the weathering I added some chipping in areas using Vallejo cam black brown. this was applied with a fine tipped brush in areas where chipping was most likely to be. I then gave the whole tank a wash of Ultimate dark dirt.

Once the wash had dried I removed most of it using damp cotton buds which leaves the wash in all the corners and panel lines giving a very good effect. I also removed the wash going in the direction water would run down the tank leaving some subtle streaking in places.
I will give the tank another coat of aqua gloss before moving on to the next stage of weathering.

Next step on the build was to give the whole tank a was of Ultimate Earth mixed with some Ultimate Light dirt. this was applied with an airbrush.

The turret after the wash had dried and before removing it.


The hull and wheels all covered with the wash.

The wash was removed with some kitchen towel and a paint brush. Some of the wash was left in areas to give a build up of dirt in certain areas.
This is after the wash was removed.


Next step will be to give the tank a coat of matt varnish and then add the final weathering effects before fitting the tracks and figure.

The tracks were painted with grey primer rattle can. Once this was dry the inside of the tracks were painted with Vallejo steel Metal colour.
I then masked off either side of the guide teeth with some 4mm masking tape. This is the same width as the road wheels. The rest of the tracks were then painted with Vallejo cam black brown to give a dark base layer.

I will be giving the track a wash and then dry brush the raised areas to give a slight bare metal appearance. They will then be fitted to the tank and will get a bit more weathering whilst in place.

I'm a bit behind updating my build thread and got a lot of progress to add. Had to go back through the last few posts to remember where I was up to.
The last post I had painted the tracks and was in the process of dry brushing the raised detail on the outer side. I did this using Vallejo metal colour steel. Its quite a dark colour and not to shiny and I think it gives a nice look to the tracks.

I then gave the tracks a wash with the Ultimate light dirt/earth mix. This was then removed from area when dry.
That's all the work on the tracks until I fit them in place. I may add a bit more weathering but will see how they look when fitted first.

The next stage on the tank was to give it a coat of matt varnish to seal the weathering. This was done using Vallejo matt varnish thinned with water.
Once this was dry a covered the whole of the tank with a dark brown filter. I used Vallejo model air dark brown thinned down and misted over with the airbrush.

I will be adding some dry mud effects as I want to have a go at this just to see how it works. As this build is really just for me to learn new techniques and have a go I do not have a real idea of exactly how I want it to look when finished. I will do more specific weathering effects when I get the hang of it on future builds.

The plan was to have a go at doing some dry mud effects. This was done using some powdered filler mixed with water and a few drops of Vallejo concrete colour as this is a nice grey. This was mixed to a fairly thickish paste and applied to the underside of the tank and the wheels. This dried a lot lighter than I thought so not sure if I like the look of it. May add a bit more of a darker colour over the top. I also added the tracks in place this was fairly easy to do although if I used these tracks again I would definitely replace the resin pins with steel wire as I find they can break very easily.

I also added some streaking to some of the chips around the tank this was done using Vallejo German cam black brown and streaked using a damp flat brush. I will add some lighter rust colours to some areas to give a bit more variation.

Not a lot left at this stage, will do a little bit more on the weathering but not to much don't want to over do it and I am pretty pleased with what I have managed to achieve so far. Also got the figure to finish and fix in place and finish the display base.

Not done much over last few weeks on this build, So plan on spending the next couple of days I have off finishing it. Not a lot left to do and should be fairly easy to finish.
First task was to adjust the mud effects I had done as I was not happy with the colour. I went over them with some AK Interactive mud effects earth colour.

The figure was painted with Vallejo model colour paints as close to the Tamiya paint the instructions call for. It was then coated with aqua gloss and given a wash with Ultimate dark dirt. Once dry this was removed leaving it in the creases of the uniform, the whole figure was then given a matt varnish before being fitted in place. I had to file some of the feet down as the figures arms did not quite sit in the right place.

The display base I built for this build is a generic base that can be used for other builds. Hopefully in the future I will build more specific dio's for some of my builds but wanted to keep it fairly simple for the first one.
Start of the base an off cut of 12mm ply

The ground was built up using 5mm foam board stuck in place with pva. The road surface is a piece of 2mm card covered with a layer of filler.
this was then sanded smooth but not completley flat. I left some low spots to give the surface some texture.

The foam board was covered with strips of card fixed in place with a hot glue gun.

This was then covered with plaster bandage.

The whole base was painted with brown acrylic and the road surface was primed with black and then several layers of grey applied over the top.

The low spots in the filler where painted a darker shade of grey to represent damage to the road surface. The whole road was sprayed with a thinned down grey to blend it all together.

Next I made a start on building a fence to go along the road at the back. I printed off a template and used blue tack to hold the posts in place while adding the cross pieces. I used round wood skewers for the posts and coffee stirrers for the cross sections. I slightly filed a flat on the round post to help locate and stick the cross pieces in place.

The fence was painted with various colours of grey and then given several washes of different colours. I applied some dark green wash in several place before giving it a final dark wash.

I added some static grass across the front edge of the base. This was from War world scenics and applied with a green scene static grass applicator. I also put the fence in position along the back edge so I knew where to put grass up to.

The fence was then removed and the rest of the static grass was added. I also added some forest floor material along the back edge. This will be covered with hedges along the fence.

The fence in place. I have created a slight ditch along the road. this was brushed over with weathering powders to give some variation to the colour.
Also applied some along the edge of the road to give a slight dusty/dirty look.

The hedges are made from coir witch I got from ebay. This comes in a big bag and i teased out a piece to the shape and size I wanted.
This comes black and I left it this colour.

I used Noch leaves in a couple of different colours to cover the coir. I sprayed the coir with some spray adhesive and then sprinkeled on the leaves.

The coir after being covered. I then sprayed this with some hairspray to help seal it and hold any loose bits. i made several of these to go across the back of the base.

The hedges in place these were fixed down with pva glue.

I also added some smaller pieces in front of the fence.

The base looks really nice! I should build something like that, too, so I can take pics of vehicles on a realistic surface without the need of building a complete dio every time. One can see where and how you learned building stuff like that. It's the typical model railroad way and I like that a lot. I "steal" ideas from railroad people whenever I find them nice and useful. Both hobbies can use the exchange of ideas and techniques.
