Part two - P51 D Mustang- 1/48 Tamiya

Had to clear my workbench before I started this, and now it is clear.

Not a lot of time this morning, just enough to get the interior area primed:

I painted the interior, and then added a MIG wash neutral to it.





And I let that dry overnight.

Then assembled the main body of the plane:




The color call out was a flat black, but I did a coat of a metallic black, followed by a flat black which gave these instruments a nice "metal" look when I weathered them.



Also, I want to ramp up my attention to detail on this build verses my last. Taking a 5mm drill bit I carefully opened up these pipes - just deep enough to give the appearance of being open. Top before, bottom after:

I am always impressed with people who can do a 1/72 scale and do them well. However, for me. I look at a model in that scale and it's just a pile of blurry plastic things - I tried a 1/32 in planes and the problem is the skill level required is much higher - as the details are just that much more refined. These 1/48 Tamaya kits are about the right size and are fairly cheep.

Just order yourself up one and start over.

Primed these parts - haha although this is before I primed them! I want to add some color tones to these parts so that is why they are not attached just yet:



Am I the only one or do you people encounter this little issue? The nose of planes does not seem to take paint at all! Not sure if it's the shape or what but my paints just run off - so this time I used a 600 fine file and roughed up the outside and then brushed painted Gesso to add some stick to the the part and it seemed to work fine.

Had the same problem with the spinner on my 'B'. Cocked it right up when I sprayed the yellow so had to strip it all the way back to the plastic

Sadly I introduced my Mustang to a concrete piller last Monday in the parking garage - I just touched it and $3100.00 damage. But now I get a new front bumper.

Yep, primed it: it was Amazing..... Because I drank three beers and I think I painted in the lines...

And hey check it out, here is the nose - I sanded it, then hand painted it with Gesso, and then primed it. It worked PERFECT...
In the words of Johnny Bench "no runs, no drips, and no errors."



Did I mention I have a new two tap Kegorator? A critical tool for model building - and a must for a man cave!

First I paint the wheel wells:







To hopefully add some depth to my NMF I apply a thin coat of metallic black - it's a Vallejo model air # 71.073




Then I mix Vallejo model air chrome 71.064 10 parts with 2 parts Vallejo Game Air Chainmal silver #72.753





I'll let this dry up over night

Beautiful. I like the way even the wheel bay doors fit perfectly. Superb kit and superb work!

Beautiful paint job mate!! I built this kit some time ago and just like you I've ordered another one. It really is a top quality kit!!

I paint some of the panels in a different color metal to add some interest:





The results:










I then give the model a light gloss coat - I'll let this set up for a day or so.

Using Tamiya bendy tape I plan out the part of plane that should be green:



I paint the nose in a yellow:



Painting the green area:





Since I used Tamiya paint here (the best olive drab color I think) I was able to get rid of the overspray by using some Windex on a cotton bud.

Decals added :





I remove the canopy and using this:


I drill a 5mm hole in the canopy and attach this string to the back of the seat:



It works:



I tape off the nose and apply the red color:



Although my nose area is all mucked up. As I remove the red paint I realize this looks perfect!



It has just enough weathering:
