Painting logs

Sorry yet another request for help.

I'm struggling trying to paint logs, I've got this up grade kit from Verlinden http://www.network54.com/Forum/47208/me ... +set(fury) I'm trying to replicate or get something like the logs in the pictures. I've tried all sort's base with new wood, chipping solution, base brown and the chip off, the reverse, washes etc. The logs themselves are really good mouldings the have grain and axe damaged where branches have been removed, I've tried dark brown wash on the grain by wiping off, then lighter over the that using dry brush just doesn't work well.

Any ideas gratefully received.

Try dry brushing lighter shades then use a GW wash to tone it down. The games workshop washes are water based and not so harsh.
