During tonight's Live at the bench show Me and some of the other viewers came up with the idea to do a SIG or Buddy build (when we only have a few participants) dedicated to the McDonnal Douglas F-4 Phantom II. It will be open to all scales, variants, kit manufaturers. After market, Resin, PE and decals allowed as well as scratch building. I is not mandatory to use AM if you prefer to Build OOB that's fine by us. We are looking at a start date of OCT 01 2016 and will run until the end of the year. If there are any other members that want to pay a tribute to the Rhino just reply to this thread.

I'm not decided which one I will build
- 1/32 F-4F (Revell)
- 1/48th Rockin' Rhino (F-4J) or Good evening Da Nang (F-4C) (both Eduard) (never worked with PE or Resin before so one of these will be a challenge)
- 1/72nd Black Bunny (VX-4) Hasegawa F-4J (Rare kit these days, Bought this on hEppy-bay and payed 99$ for it)
- 1/72nd Wild Weasel (F-4G Early) Tamiya kit
or just another one I might buy during following weeks

I just don't see the appeal in this bird


I mean it was barely used in any airforces


Never shot down enemy planes, especially migs nor was versatile in armament and roles


and had no intrinsic esthetically beauty in its design


Well, just to humour you guys, if I see one at the LHS today I might just pick it up....out of pity, really.

I mean like only Australia, Egypt, Germany, Greece, Iran, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Spain, Turkey and United Kingdom And that was outside all the branches of the US military apparatus

When the pilot figured out how to actually fly the darn thing during that minor conflict in South East Asia that lasted for 6 months short of 20 years .

Captain Charles B. "Chuck" DeBellevue USAF (6 Confirmed Kills), Lt Randall "Duke" Cunningham USN (5 Confirmed Kills), Lt j.g. William P. Driscoll USN (5 Confirmed Kills), Capt. Steve Ritchie USAF (5 Confirmed Kills) and Capt. Jeff Feinstein (5 Confirmed Kills) all where flying this weird flying machine during this campaign and even became aces whilst doing it

I have a 1/72 Tamiya Navy Phantom and some armament loading guys from Hasegawa in the office stash
BUT if I see a nice, bright, shiny Eduard box at the LHS I could hardly be blamed for giving it a new proper home

I hear ya, I'm contemplating redoing a Revell 1:32 F-4E from the USAFE airbase where the old man used to work that I did as a kid.

Back then the basic F-4 kit Revell made was an absolute turd. Back in the late 80's early 90's there was hardly any aftermarket available for arge scale aircraft. I had see a proper airbrush back around the same time but being, only as an early teen now way was it remotely even close in the price range I could afford on a twice a week paperroute. Needless to say retrospective that came out looking a bit like a fresh pile of horse manure.

But now a day it's a different ball game. Resin, Photo-etch, Decent enough kit, and even a rerelease of the decals for that squadron up the road by Dutch Decal. :d yes indeed I'm as happy as a young teenager at Christmas.

Hopefully I can do a better job than when I was a young teenager.

P.s. who am I to judge, I'm as styrene addicted as the other members here. And o ya I'm looking at a price tag of around 200 euro's for this build already

I found nothing interesting Phantom wise at the hobby shop...so I will try the Tamiya Navy bird, maybe launching off a carrier deck

The Eduard Da Nang kit is indeed a very nice kit. I'm just thinking which one I will build : The Da Nang one or the Rockin' Rhino one.

I can't enter a LHS and be leaving without an F-4
That's why I'm not allowed near one by the Misses

I think I'll be joining you guys this, I'm sure I can find one to build in my growing stash of rhinos.

Yes, CR was the US tail code for Soesterberg "Camp Amsterdam" Airforce Base. Until the unit got closed down by defense cutbacks in 1993.

The official name for that Camo was the Woodland II Scheme if i'm not mistaken.. And yes that was the scheme also used over Vietnam.

I love the F-4 and have several kits, but the way I've been building I don't know about starting this. Sigh. I'll give is a few days thought.

I so know this feeling
I been trapped in detailing a Bugatti that seems designed to NOT be made....it drags you down and it zaps your energy. Good to take a rest.
I like to finish what I start and have decided to do a couple "simple" builds in a totally different genre than what I normally do. So, I jump into the sci-fi sig and this buddy build to get some motivation and support.
Get a Phantom bud, we will pull you out of the funk

there's nothing better to get rid of the modeling mojo blues that building something oddball and left field to than your normal genre and normal field of modeling. Just pick up a 1:144 F-4 and get it together in a day or two. Problem solved. Dang with all my talks with the psychologist i'm starting to dish it out as well before I'll know it they'll boot me out of treatment for conforming so well

My dance card is full through Christmas, but if I can I'd love to try one. One of my favorite post-50's jet designs.

Maybe I can squeeze in a 1/144 Put me down for a "maybe."

Very cool diorama idea Scott. Not to be rivet counting here, but it's either my eyes or the small screen on the phone but the plane in the reference photo looks a lot like a F-18 to me
