Hello from Queensland, Australia!

Hello fellow Modellers!

My name is Rowan, I'm 35yrs old and live in remote rural Queensland, Australia. The closest hobby shop is 400 km away!

I now work in telecommunications on the copper and fibre network out here, and do some remote radio work. Its quite a technical job and I enjoy working alone and the challenges that brings.

For fun I drive 5 hrs to my "local" racetrack to try to race motorcycles with my friends once a month. My track bike is a 2009 Kawasaki ZX6R Ninja and I ride a 2014 Ducati 899 Panigale on the street. I'm quite passionate about all things motorcycles and MotoGP. I also play Digital Combat Simulator A-10C Warthog, which is an awesome flight sim.

I have wanted to build scale models for a long time but never really had the time to get into it. A few false starts on kits over the years but I just couldn't finish one due to career/ life/ losing motivation /ect. But since buying the house and settling down career wise I now have a dedicated "modelling cave" to play in, and I can enjoy my weekends once again.

The kits that really spark my interest in scale modelling is primarily 1:48 carrier aircraft but the 1:12 motorcycle kits from Tamiya also look amazing. I have bought a few larger kits over the years that live in the cupboards. I don't think I'll build them for many years as I just don't have the skills to do it justice. Plus where am I going to put a 1.2m German battleship, or a 1:32 B-17 Flying Fortress?! I'll deal with that problem later.

This is the Tamiya 1:48 A1-J Skyraider that I've been carrying around house-to-house since 2013. I'm hoping that all the parts are still in the box and to finally be able to finish it. I think the masking tape on the plastic canopy will be great fun to remove after all this time.



Anyway, that's me. I have a YouTube channel (link in my signature) that I made ages ago for correspondence with my friend in Canada to share our builds between us. He and I both started new jobs and that never happened. So it's not a public educational thing by any means. But I hope to do video for each build as it slowly documents my progression, mistakes and lessons and to hopefully inspire him or anyone else to give it a go again.

Finished me apprenticeship in '82 after learning about System X and Y, fibre optics, PCM, TDM, FDM, STDs touch screen dealer boards and then went to work in the 'infamous' Faraday Buildings where they still had Strowger equipment!

They taught me how to hold me booze and other things, all the important parts of life.

Moved to Brisbane with me Aussie wife in 1994.

Hey guys, thank you for the very warm welcome! I have been slowly getting the 'cave' into working order and should be good to go for the weekend.

Looking forward to posting a few updates and get this Skyraider across the line.

In the meantime I have been checking out the forums and getting a few pointers from other's builds.

Oh cool, A fellow comms tech! I had to Google the Faraday Building, it was the first phone exchange in London! That's pretty cool!!! Would have been awesome to work there.

I have been around Queensland in the exchanges here, and a few in Brisbane are true relics of a time gone by. Lots of old equipment just as a reminder I think. Its fun to check out. I love that stuff. I caught up with a few lads that are retiring soon. They used to put the banana chairs on the roof and drink beers watching the cricket at the Gabba from the exchange roof, all during the 9-5! It was a different time, indeed.
