I thought the 1/24 Mosquito was on the large size (thanks to that Modelzone offer). I have not forgotten the Monogram 1/72 B36 (mine is in a slightly sorry state unfortunately) and the Revell 1/48 B1 (I did get as far as making the cockpit... many years ago... still to be painted thought).

I was interested to see that you can actually buy a 1/18 Aircraft kit. A Dauntless...

How long before we see something like a Spitfire in 1/12 scale (or larger)?

OK, just had a "memory moment". Hasegawa did of course release some 1/8 scale WW1 models. The Sopwith Camel had a wingspan of over a metre!

With the 1/32 B17 and the yet to be released 1/32 Lanc. Who has a very large display cabinet?

Probably just as well we are all wealthy and can afford these massive models. Can't see myself indulging, even if I had the money!

Then there is my Pocher 1/8 scale Volvo F12 truck...

I have neve gone bigger than 1/72 myself. Might venture th 1/48 aircraft or even 1/35 armour but no bigger.

Not just in aircraft either. Tamiya are releasing their first new 'big scale' bike in 17 years.

I still have an 1/8 scale corvette in my stash as well.

I think kits got to a certain size but were losing detial and quality but with improved molds and processes I guess they can now get the detial into the larger kits and still keep the quality of the parts upto an acceptable standard.

The issue for me is that, beyond a certain scale, especially for aircraft, you are getting into RC model territory. And yes I know those models require a degree of construction, but I see them as something separate to a "scale" model.

Although I am not sure on the scale, in the local museum there is a very large scale Short Sunderland, it was an RC model, but is now just a ceiling hanger in the museum. I need to go back in there and get some pics of the models they had. I did ask if they wanted any made, but was told the only one they didn't have was a Saro Lerwick (when I say all, I mean all that are relevant to the area during the war) and as far as I know there was only ever a 1/72 vacform kit of this plane, and they are rare as anything now.

For me at the mo 1:48 is quite big enough but in the future I hope to do 1:32 but that would be my limit I think otherwise ill have no where to put them. And I think unless you have a mansion it would be the same for most people.

Guppy you could model a shelf in the shape of a carrier flight deck! Then you can display your Navy aircraft on it! Could do a flat rendition of the island at the back so its clear what it is. That would be pretty cool!

Guppy, should only really take some 5mm MDF or something, cut it to shape with a jigsaw, paint it, and mount it as a shelf! My Dad made me Spitfire shelves when I was younger, keep meaning to get a photo of them.

I think models in large scales are very cool as the detail is much more visible and the bigger size make them more realistic. However, i doubt is is necessary to go that far. I´m building the Revell Heinkel He 219 in 1/32 scale at the moment and its size is quite bulky (but thats by far not the biggest aircraft model available!). I doubt i could handle a 1/32 scale He 111 on my desk properly.
The model in largest scale i have is a 1/6 scale Kübelwagen, this thing is huge but relatively compact so its not that difficult to display compared to an aircraft.

Largest scale I've built is 1/6 but that's for Motorcycles but they don't really leave that much of a footprint, you could probably display three 1/6 scale Motorcycles in the same space a 1/48 B-17 took up. I think the largest Aircraft kits I have are the Trumpeter 1/32 F-117A and SU-27 Flanker B (they are about the same size) and I really don't want to go bigger than that, would have loved the HK B-17 and B-25 and even the forthcoming Lanc in 1/32 but I really have to draw the line somewhere. I think its great these big kits of such quality exist though, we've never had it so good when it comes to choice in 1/32 Aircraft especially.

Hey its not my fault it looks like that, but I know what you mean When I bought this it was at the first early Alien War show in Glasgow in 1991'ish? The kit then was £50 and they had the 1/1 Pulse rifle kit for sale too for £120 as I recall (wish I'd bought it now) both have long since been out of production and would be worth a bit to collectors in original boxes I'd imagine?

There was no colour call out in the kit so I freeze framed the VHS of Alien and did a sketch with a note of colours, no DVD, Blu-ray or even Internet for me in 1991, but its about right colour wise and I'm happy with the yukky bits, one day I'll re-spray the outer skin and mottle it again, its a pretty basic kit, separate fingers, one piece body and three piece tail in Vinyl, I made a sort of skeleton out of wire coat-hangers to make it pose-able, padded the body out with old tea towels and filled the tail and fingers with builders silicone to stop things creasing when bended.

Wowser Webby, just re-reading the thread again and looked at this link, when I first read this I assumed this would be a re-release of their old Harley 1/6 Motorcycle that I built many many years ago, all of their 1/6 Bike kits are pretty old now but get fresh re-releases from time to time, currently have their 1/6 Suzuki Katana 1100S (built) and Honda CB1100R and Kawasaki Z1300 in the wings waiting to be built, was waiting for their Yamaha XS1100 Midnight Special to get a re-release so that I could have one of each from the big four Japanese factories of 80's muscle bikes in this scale.

I'd always hoped Tamiya would produce another 1/6 Bike kit to the engineering and detail standard they now do Bike kits in 1/12, not a massive Harley fan but this one looks good, a definite purchase when it comes out for me and I hope they do more, especially some of the street bikes I used to own

Maybe they are still using old CAD drawings? for sure the real Harley V-Twin engine has not changed a lot since its introduction so its possible Tamiya are using its mould again, the bodywork and cycle parts are like nothing from the old Tamiya 1/6 Harley range that I recall though? We'll see

Thinking about this one again and looking at the link, it mentions stuff like movable brake levers and and stuff, quite possible in 1/6 without getting gimmicky, also if this Bike has a chain drive Tamiya would really need to do an individual drive chain as standard given their evolution in kit engineering, after all they made this an option for their 1/12 RC-166 and after market for 1/12 do individual chain link extras too now for their other 1/12 Bikes, always thought the 1/12 chains looked a bit over scale though?

Its quite probable the real Harley Davidson they are modelling had a belt drive though, I'm no expert on Harleys and that would be easier for them to do ... still really keen on this one.
