1/72 Airfix Red Arrow

I've finally opened up my Red Arrow kit for a proper look, and first impressions are fairly good.

First of all, this is one of the cleanest kits I've seen, with absolutely no flash whatsoever. The panel lines are a bit deep, but could be worse! It does lack a bit of detail but I can live with that in 1/72. The cockpit is flat but the instrument decals are very detailed which makes up for it a bit. It'll be hard to see it anyway. I don't plan on spending too much time airbrushing the cockpit, as it will hardly be seen and not worth setting up, cleaning airbrush etc. so I'll use a brush for that.

The decals look bright and detailed, so I think it should turn into a pretty good wee model.

After the Tornado disaster I needed something to do yesterday so I started putting this little kit together. Ended up getting the whole thing ready for priming it went together so easily and quickly! A few gaps for the putty but nothing major.

Managed to get a couple of coats of primer done yesterday. One more should do it I think. I primed with the undercarriage in place, as I'm going to brush paint them anyway.

Then a few coats of Humbrol Arrow Red today. I can safely say I will never airbrush humbrol again... An absolute dog to work with. Nozzle is utterly clogged and backflowing even when I'm not pinching it. Looks good though! Will need to sort out the undercarriage with a brush.

I had the same problem with mine. Finished up spraying it neat at 25 psi. Looking good anyway, and it is the only correct colour for the Reds. Which should be more accurately called the Orange Arrows.

Decals done, details painted, masking tape off.



Just need to add a few small bits to the underside and then gloss the whole thing.

I bought (it's on its way) a 1/48 scale Red Areows jet. I was born in England now living in Australia and but I saw the Red Arrows as a child. Seeing them at an air show probably how I fell in love with planes and jets c:

Anyways do you think it's best to build the complete model and then spray it?
Currently I don't own an airbrush it could change tho as I'm looking at the cheaper end on eBay c:

Hi Chelsea, the Reds had a similar effect on me as a child (still do!) The results would be better if you paint before adding the landing gear, but I didn't have the patience to do that, I just wanted to do a really quick and easy build for a bit of fun. I think if I was doing a 1/48 version I would take more time over it! Hope that helps!

What red paint did you use ?

Hopefully if I can afford it I can get a cheap mini airbrush before otherwise I'll can spray it and cause the Red Arrows are glossy might gloss finish the jet c:
