Postie finally showed up with my kit today, so I can start my build-thread;
I will build the Trumpeter 1/72 Hawker Sea Fury Mark 11 (FB.11) with some extra Eduard PE and a masking kit added to the build.

I'm really looking forward to build this awesome aircraft!

I think the paint-scheme looks amazing - I love the Sky/Dark Grey color combination (hope I can do it justice)

Hawker Sea Fury:

The Hawker Sea Fury was a British fighter aircraft designed and manufactured by Hawker. It was the last propeller-driven fighter to serve with the Royal Navy, and also one of the fastest production single piston-engined aircraft ever built. Developed during the Second World War, the Sea Fury entered service two years after the war ended. The Sea Fury proved to be a popular aircraft with a number of overseas militaries, and was used during the Korean War in the early 1950s, as well as against the 1961 Bay of Pigs Invasion of Cuba.

The Sea Fury attracted international orders as both a carrier and land-based aircraft; it was operated by countries including Australia, Burma, Canada, Cuba, Egypt, West Germany, Iraq, and Pakistan. The type acquitted itself well in the Korean War, fighting effectively even against the MiG-15 jet fighter. Although the Sea Fury was retired by the majority of its military operators in the late 1950s in favour of jet-propelled aircraft, a considerable number of aircraft saw subsequent use in the civil sector, and several remain airworthy in the 21st century both as heritage and racing aircraft.




Background:

With the end of the Second World War in Europe in sight, the RAF began cancelling many aircraft orders. Thus, the RAF's order for the Fury was cancelled before any production examples were built because the RAF already had excessive numbers of late Mark Spitfires and Tempests and viewed the Fury as an additional overlap with these aircraft. Although the RAF had pulled out of the programme, development of the type continued as the Sea Fury. Many of the Navy's carrier fighters were either lend-lease aircraft and thus to be returned, or in the case of the Supermarine Seafire had considerable weaknesses as naval aircraft such as narrow undercarriages. The Admiralty opted to procure the Sea Fury as the successor to these aircraft instead of purchasing the lend-lease aircraft outright.

The first production model, the Sea Fury F Mk X (Fighter, Mk 10), flew in September 1946. With the completion of flight testing at Boscombe Down in 1946, the trials process was repeated aboard the aircraft carrier HMS Victorious. Carrier testing revealed directional stability issues related to rudder effectiveness during landing, and this was resolved by the adoption of a tail wheel lock, which also improved the wheel retraction behaviour. Several rectifying design changes were made by Hawker in response to feedback from the test pilots, including the adoption of a five-bladed Rotol propeller to greatly reduce overspeed tendencies, a re-designed rudder assembly to increase rudder effectiveness, Dynafocal engine mountings to reduce vibration at low speeds, and an improved undercarriage with greater flexibility; these changes greatly improved the aircraft's deck landing characteristics. Arrestor hook trials initially revealed the Sea Fury to be prone to missing the wires, this was rapidly resolved by modifications to the hook dampener mechanism.

By March 1947, production Sea Furies were already being produced for the Fleet Air Arm. The fourth and sixth production aircraft were used in further trials with Illustrious, and the main change from the earlier aircraft was the adoption of a longer, stiffer arrestor hook. Fifty Mk X Sea Furies were produced. These were identical to the SR666 prototype except for the Centaurus 18 engine and four-bladed propeller; at least 20 of the 50 aircraft performed in the aircraft's intensive trials programme. Following the successful completion of weapons trials at the A&AEE Boscombe Down, the Sea Fury was cleared for operational use on 31 July 1947.

Hawker Aircraft continued to develop and refine the Sea Fury Mk X, resulting in the more capable Sea Fury Mk 11, otherwise known as the Sea Fury FB 11. This upgraded model had several improvements, most notable being the hydraulically powered wing folding mechanism which eased flight deck operations and the adoption of new weapons for performing air-to-ground combat. Iraq ordered a two-seat Sea Fury model and the British Admiralty followed suit. During testing, the rear canopy collapsed, leading to a redesign of the type's two-seat cockpit prior to entering service. Designated as the Sea Fury T 20, a total of 60 trainers were manufactured for the Fleet Air Arm between 1950 and 1952. The Royal Navy bought a total of 615 Sea Furies, mostly of the Mk 11 standard.

Great subject choice. Certainly one of the definitive piston powered fighters, and definitely one of my top 5 favorite aircraft. Ive been working on the 1/48 version, originally intending to save it for this SIG but decided to do Canadian markings. I certainly hope the forthcoming Airfix 1/48 Sea Fury is good!

It's a great looking aircraft and after completing my MiG-15 it feels just right to build this one too

Okey... I have finally got some time to sit down and build

As ursual I have started to clean up the parts for the cockpit and I also sent some time trying to figure out which parts of PE I should use and in which order I need to assemble everything. It's not a complicated kit, but there are lots of PE and some parts needs to be painted and some parts are prepaintede already.

I also looked at some pictures to get ideas of what the most prominent details look like.





The kit itself does not offer much details as it is (it's not like my latest Tamiya or Eduard builds), so part from the PE I will scratchbuild some stuff too...

So, let's make things complicated to begin with...

I decided not to use the PE seat-cushion and instead mould a new one using a PE mesh to make an imprint.

Ohai, fellas!

Had some good benchtime today...

I drilled out the holes in the main landing gear support strut with a pin vice and a couple of different drill bits.

A also did a quick dry-fit of the main landing gear to see if I needed to deal with ejection pin marks - I was hoping that they would be covered by the tire, but it seems that I had to do something about them

The first one was quite shallow so I could scrape and sand it away, the second one need a drop of dissolved sprue

So this kit seems to be a bit of a roller-coaster-ride to look forward to. The tooling is from 2005 so I was hoping for less flash
I must admit that I havce started to get spoiled by Tamiya and Eduard kits

Fueltanks - I tried using Tamiya Cement for gluing the parts together and to have time to make a final alignment before I glued them in place using Tamiya Extra Thin. Worked like a charm! Thanks Paul for that tip!

I will leave them to cure overnight so the seams have hardened, before I sand and polish them. The tanks will be quite visible since I will build the Sea Fury with wings in the folded up position. So I can't make a shortcut

Regarding the drop tanks, I have read somewhere that the kit's tanks are over-sized. I don't remember just where I read it as it was just after the kit was released.

There are a couple of known issues with this kit according to this review http://hyperscale.com/2007/features/sea ... nggp_1.htm . It doesn't mention the droptanks, but that does not mean that they are correct in size, right

I cant find any aftermarket replacement parts so I will leave it at that I think. Scratchbuilding those is "next level" for me...


Okay.... did some more work this evening...

I have fitted the small circular window on the left side of the fuselage. I have no idea what this is - someone suggests a recce camera lens port, but I haven't found any reliable source for that. I have covered the backside with some kitchen foil so it will not be completely dark.

The tub, sidewalls and IP have been painted with a dark blue/grey colour (XF-63 German Grey) and the seat with a Dark Yellow (XF-59 Desert Yellow with a couple of drops of XF-3 Yellow) and the chair with XF-1 Black

I have applied som Abt 502 oilwash in the cockpit to make the interior become more "visible". The cockpit is very dark so I need to do everything I can to enhance the contrast.

The droptanks have been resting for a couple of days so I thought it was time to sand and polish the seams. I don't think that I will need any filler, but I'll make a final check after the primer have been applied.

I know that a lot of Trumpeter kits get a knocking but I think that the Sea Fury makes for a good kit!



I used Eduard PE, the Pavla cockpit and brass tube to replace the exhausts (only as I have an inability to build of of the box) and the I only thing that I would say that needs to be replaced, is the kit prop blades which just don't look right so also used Pavla's replacement set and whilst I can't put my finger on the problem, I think that these may also be suspect!

Yeah, I must admit that I have been eyeballing the Pavla resin upgrades (props and cockpit) and I was very tempted to buy them, but since I bought the Eduard PE Zoom set I didn't really need it and I thought that the Pavla props didn't look convincing on the photos so I decided to skip them.

I would love to have a set of Dowty Rotol decals on the props, but they are not included in the kit

Regarding Trumpeter: I would rate this kit as a good kit - it's not fantastic. Trumpeters modern jets in 1/72 in new toolings are fantastic. I got the MiG-29SMT and the SU-33 Flanker D (sofar) in my stash

The control-stick in this kit is really not to scale....

I have also painted the main gear bay and the "engine" in Vallejo Metal Colour "Dull Aluminium", the oil-cooler intake is painted with a darker metal tone (Steel).

Unfortunately I had a lot of fit issues caused by the PE (IP and sidepanels), I managed to squeeze the fuselage together, but I didn't use enough clamps so it moved while the glue cured. So I got quite soft seams that "eroded" when I sanded and polished them. It's not the end of the world - I can fix this with some CA-glue as a filler/bonder, which I will sand and polish. I might have to do it a couple of times to get the result I'm looking for.

I have filled all defect seams with CA-glue and it will cure overnight. I have noticed that the styrene in this kit is quite soft and I might have used too much Tamiya Extra Thin - and as a consequence I softed the styrene too much... Well well, you learn as long as you live (and live as long as you learn

The cockpit detail is looking really nice Tommy, that's a real shame about those seams have you ever tried the baking soda and super glue method its great for building up the seam and is rock hard and sands and polishes very nicely.

I have heard about using baking soda, but I thought it was used primarily as a "kicker".

No worries I will fix those seams tomorrow, they look worse than they are due to the magnification.

...but I have to rescribe a lot of panel-lines and I'm not looking forward to that

Hey Guys!

I have been able to get rid of those small seams and indentations using a second round of CA-glue, so the surfaces are ready for rescribing. There are 4 or 5 panellines that are lost so it's not a crazy amount of rescribing needed. But it's enough for me to feel anxious about it - for me this is the least enjoyable party of modelling (or to be more correct the only part that I do not enjoy)
But it has to be done and I just have to be very careful doing it.

I hate when the clamps snap and fly all over the workbench, so I used a small pad of foam to get a better grip for the clamp - it worked great!

I decided not to use the styrene parts for the Hispano Mk V 20 mm guns, because I think they look ugly and need a lot of cleaning up. I will scratch build them from a styrene rod instead, it's much easier and the end result will probably be better.

I can't postpone this any more, so I rescribed the panellines on the fuselage.

I prepared myself by bring out every tool I got....

However, I only used Dymo tape and the Trumpeter rescriber for straight lines. For the smaller panels I used a scribing template and an old airbrushneedle in a pin-vice. The result is not perfect but it will suffice. I sanded and polished the surfaces and cleaned out the dust with IPA and a cotton bud.

The Main wing section snapped firmly into place and the wingroots looks fine, so there is no need for any filler here...

I worked on the underwing navigation lights yesterday, using this picture as a reference:


First I had to clear the parts from flash

I sprayed XF-60 Dark Yellow on a piece of kitchenfoil where I had masked the "lenses" for the red and green lights.

I tinted the lenses with X-25 Clear Green and X-27 Clear Red

I used Tamiya tape to affix them to the inside of the wing, since I wanted a distance between the clear lens on the wing and the lamps. Hope that makes sense...

The dissolved sprue that I used to fill the gap between the fuselage and the main wing had been left for a couple of days to cure, so it was time to sand down the excessive material and polish the seam.

Seam have been polished and is smooth now, but there are a couple of airbubbles that needs to be taken care of, so I will clean out the dust with some IPA and fill them with CA-glue. But I'm happy with the result, I managed to preserve most of the panel-lines

Hey Guys!

It's been a busy weekend at the bench. Good stuff!
I'll continue with the masking of the fuselage and starting to prep the kit (and myself) for paint.

Lets cover up those wheel wells; I'm using a piece of paper to protect the small details and the weathering from the sticky side of the masking tape.

I am not happy with the seamline in the air intake for the cooling radiator... That part of the leading edge of the wing will attract the eye.

I also took the decision to scratchbuild the pitot tube, since the kit part is difficult to clean up - sometimes it's less work involved and it will give a better end result to scratchbuild stuff instead of spend time fixing moulding issues

I used a 0.75 mm styrene rod and a gauge 11 guitarstring for the pitot tube

I sprayed up a couple of spoons to experiment with Dark Sea Grey and Sky colours

There are a couple of yellow insignia marks on the propeller. I always use Pink as a base when I paint yellow, to get that stark Insignia Yellow tone.

And I can use standard Tamiya XF-3 Yellow.

I will leave it until tomorrow to cure before I mask the tips of the blades and the ring on the spinner

You shouldn't feel like a lazy modeller - it's me being broken and spending too much time on my builds

Okey... Painted the prop using XF-85 Rubber black, just to give some variation to the standard black. I think this black/blue tone will look nice with the Dark Sea Greay and Sky.

Speaking of Dark Sea Gray and Sky... Let's paint some spoons:

I started by painting some colours that looks Sky-ish from the Tamiya range, just to compare. I soon came to the conclusion that XF-14 and XF-76 should go back into the paintrack ASAP. The difference didn't look that big when I compared them in the paint-jars, but when painted on a larger area it's another story.

The spoon with the XF-21 has 3:1 mix of Sky and XF-2 White. I think it looks correct.

The gray spoon is painted with Gunze H331 Dark Sea Grey and the top has a 15% mix of White in it. I could barely see the lighter color when I mixed it but it came out way way too light. So I have to be very careful with that.


I came to the conclusion that I will use Gunze H331 straight from the jar and XF-21 Sky + XF-2 White (3:1) - I think it will look OK in this scale. I will, however, buy a jar of H333 Extra Dark Sea Grey as a backup if I need to make the gray darker.

Also I will premix all paints in a separate jars so I avoid any surprises


I looked a little closer at the decals, and it looks like the transferfilm is damaged or very rough
Also decals 1-4 needs to be cut if the wings are folded

Hey Guys!

I decided to take the bull by the horn and make the black and white ident stripes:

First I spray the XF-2 White paint as a base

I measured the decals and found that the stripes should be 4 mm wide. By reducing the width of a 6 mm Tamiya masking tape with approx. 1 mm at each side I will get masking stripes that have a sharp edges. I cut the tape on a sheet of glass to avoid deformation.

White stripes taped. I had to use Tamiya curve-tape for the fuselage stripes, since the shape of the dorsal made it impossible to use stripes of kabuki tape.

I will leave that to cure and put some tape over the black stripes to protect them before I continue with the Sky colour.

Unfortunately I haven't had time to do anything for a while, I was on a trip to Faroe Islands this weekend - it was great, but I haven't had the time to do anything for more than a week. But I hope to get something done this weekend.
