Tamiya StuG IV 1:35

My first attempt at building armour...
Since I recently started modelling, I have 2 aircraft builds under my belt. I've enjoyed building them but I'm very drawn towards the extra freedom for weathering and dioramas with land vehicles.

So, here we go...first vehicle, first time building something that isn't Airfix and only my third model. This could be fun!

I'm going to build it out of the box and just fettle the barrel seam as best I can.
It'll be primed in Ultimate black and painted with a mix of Tamiya and AK paints. I also have some AK weathering products and oils to play with.
May use hair spray for chipping...haven't decided yet...thanks for looking.

I've just ordered this kit as my first armour project too, on recommendation from some guys in the live show chat. Keen to see how you get on with it!

So I've just realise that I've neglected this thread!

Here goes, with a catch up...

So assembly was a dream...really enjoyed it. Very different from the aircraft that I've built.









Taking a tip from Sergio, I've bent up the side panels a bit...no bullet holes though!

I fancy learning to paint figures and this guy looks good standing out of the loader's hatch. So I gave him a bit of a clean up and primed him in Ultimate Grey.

Primed in Ultimate black.

I'm baffled by the DAK colours...according to the Tamiya instructions, this should be Dark Yellow XF60 but then others have suggested that it should be Braun...well I opted for a 70/30 mix of Tamiya XF60 and XF83. I think I went too heavy on the Grey!

Wheels were left with black primer for the road wheel tyres and the centres sprayed with a circle mask.

Now time to attempt a decent camo pattern...no prior experience!

I decided to just go for it and see what happens. Apart from a bit of overspray, I'm pretty pleased with it. Though the overspray has made me rethink my impending airbrush purchase!

And on to weathering...
I fitted the decals to the bare paint, then sealed it all over with Aqua Gloss.
Using AK Interactive DAK wash to do an all round pin wash, I moved onto trying out their Crusted Rust kit.
I first dotted on some light coloured oil paint and left it to dry...it wasn't really my intention, i wanted to use it as a chipping base but whilst they didn't work, the oil paint has given a bit of extra texture beneath the rust.
Really impressed with the Crusted Rust...easy to use and a great effect.

So, the story so far...

I've added some streaking using AK DAK streaking grime and finished all of the rusting.
This may be a little OTT for some tastes but i set out to create something that has had a hard life! I do think that the rust looks a bit too fresh, so I'll probably waft the while whole thing over with a fine coat of Sand wash...just to give it all a bit of uniformity.

One tip for the overspray: in future, after the initial camouflage colors go on, you can turn down the pressure on your AB and go back lightly over the overspray with the base color. Cleans most of it right up

Great work, the camo scheme really brings some interest to that model! That was my second armor kit not too long ago.

I was about to mentioned the air pressure too, but looks like spock beat me to it. Keep up the good work!
