Range of paints

Hi all,
Just wanting some help deciding on what makes of spray paint I should have for my new workshop, I have decided to take it up seriously so am turning my shed into a studio of sorts, but I require some help with deciding on the best ranges to purchase as well as the weathering side of things as I want to build 1:48 aircraft and 1:35 vehicles. I have purchased a Revell USS New York amphibious landing dock at 1:350 scale and started building it until I realised that I wasn't going to get the right finish on the hull and superstructure with painting so decided to start looking for a decent spray gun and compressor, thinking of the tc5000 and harder and steenbeck spray heads. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Stevie,

Personally I use Tamiya and Vallejo acrylic paints which both spray well when suitably thinned. However I would suggest trying a few different brands and see what works for you.

I use Tamiya and Mr Hobby acrylics, I slightly prefer Mr Hobby and find the colours are better suited to my needs, but I would recommend either

Sounds like you are on the right track for airbrush, I love my H&S
Buy paints that you need for your build rather than a full line of the latest and greatest...maybe a few of different brands and types
That way you get to try out a few different ones over a few builds to see what you like and what you don't
Likely you will end up with a mixture of different brands,types and makes of paints for specific applications
I am too cheap to buy an entire line at once and let most of it sit on a shelf
Use Ultimate primers...god I love those.

Thanks for the info, I have given myself a pretty good budget for my paints, so I'll try a few of each and see which works best for me and then go for the range. Also as regards to weathering detail, after researching the Internet it seems that Vellajo seem to have the biggest range. Any thoughts?

For weathering as in streaks/grime etc i have always used enamel based AK/mig products. The longer dry time and the fact you can reactivate them with thinners makes them much more forgiving than acrylics. ( just make sure you seal the paint before hand )
depending on your budget, oils for pin washes ( cheaper in the long run than pre made panel line washes and last much longer )
And of course, dont forget the Ultimate washes, havent used them myself but have heard nothing but good things about them..... and not just from the guys on here
