Airfix 1/144 Vostok 1 (Soyez)

Post by Lee »

This will be my first entry into the GB. If I get this finished in time I will also have a crack at something else too. I haven't done a review of this yet, but I will do one before I start building and post it up here :D

I've had this in my stash since I got back into modelling - It was the 3rd model I bought and have needed an excuse to build and the Cold War GB fir the bill.

I'm going to do the Soyez version of the Vostok.

Very very nice and a most interesting subject.

Are you building it on the pad or in space launching the probe/ capsule?

What a difference a day can make....!!!

Had a complete spare day today, and decided to spend it in the man cave - look what happened.....

Main fuselage together....

Boosters together...

Image

Mid section together...

Image

Lots of filling and sanding (this kit is nothing but bad fits and massive sink holes...lol....

Image

Soyez together and painted (though you'll never see it!.....

Image

Everything sanded....

Image

Next up was a complete re-scribe as ALL the detail is raised.... :bash:

Image

A snug Soyez...
Image

Getting snugger....
Image

Bye bye Soyez....
Image

All gone!
Image

Next was to drill out all the small thrusters - all16 of them...
Image

Soyez ready to be buttoned up....
Image

More filling and sanding...(awkward this one!)

Image

I think we may need some here too.....

Image

Crown all ready...

Hoping to get this done and finished by the end of the weekend then finish the Colonial Viper in time for next week - Happy days :th:

Wow it's a lot bigger than I thought it was going to be. At 1/144 the real thing must be monstrous.
It's really too bad that you have to enclose the capsule. Is there no way to keep it out and still build the enclosure?

Very cool Lee. I may start a collection of real world space vehicles for my little fella when he gets older. :th: :th: :th:

Ok so, Soyez painted white, just the orange fins to do....

Image

Had a real hard time deciding what colours to mix for the orange at the base of the boosters. The call out is for Humbrol training orange, 82 I think. The nearest I could get was mixing the two model airs you see at a ratio of 2:1 in the favour of orange. Think it came out OK, once it's got a matt coat on there it will dull down nicely :D

Image

Going to try alclad (for the first time) for the metal finish at the base of the boosters. Will get that done tomorrow hopefully :D
