1/48 Tamiya F-14

Post by Fridgy »

Hi everyone,

So I'm back.....

My F-35 is doing my head in with all the masking, so i have put her aside for now and picked up this kit from my LHS

I originally wasn't going to post this build on the forum as life has given me a beating lately and with the photobucket fiasco, well I'm struggling with the motivation of pulling the laptop out just to post.... :ooops:

Anyway, she was started about a week ago... have completed the pit, put together the fuselage, and assembled the weapons i will be fitting off on her

Cockpit

Image

Image

Image
the sharp eyed audience member might just notice that the RIO's radar screen is blank...... that is due to my clumsiness.....
but you might not notice..... in that case just disregard everything you just read..... :shhh:  :wtf:

Image

Image

Fuselage

Image

Image

Weapons

Image
For those keeping score.... that is 4x AIM-54's, 2x AIM-7's and for short range work 2x AIM-9's

Well thats it for the first installment

Hope you have enjoyed yourselves a little

Feedback is always welcomed..... :hi:

Ok installment 2.0.......

No photos for this update...

yeah yeah i know...

:pics: .....

tomorrow....

i promose....

well ok maybe the day after

So enough carry on, tonight i cleaned up all the missiles, assembled the front gear bay, installed the refueling probe recess and primed it all with Ultimate black primer, as well as the walls of the cockpit area of the foward fuselage

Edit:
Oh and before i forget, i also put a dab of pva over the screens and some of the larger dials to simulate glass screens

And yes "dab" is a scientific term for the amount.... :D

Not a huge amount done, but hey slow and steady yada yada yada

So thats it for tonight... Im sure you have all had enough of me rambling on....

I will upload the promised photos in the next day or so when i get a spare few minutes....wiuld be so much easier if i could upload them from my phone... but such is life

You can upload them from iOS or Android, look here viewtopic.php?f=63&t=22920

Android instructions are in the replies, if that's what you use.

Oh and by the way, great looking cockpit! :pop:

You mentioned at the top about keeping score. No not me, but thank you for listing what the weapons are. When you guys do that it helps me remember what they are. Also it feels a bit real, especially the more your Tamiya F-14 comes out and Its really looking cool so far! The pit looks quite amazing! :thumb2:

So you lucky buggers..... 2 updates in one day!!!

Update2.2

Painted the front gear bay and missiles with Ultimate white primer (I find it a great white paint, havent used it as a primer yet....
always seem to fall back on the Ultimate black at the moment)
Didn't get photos of the now white missiles as my phone camera as having issues focusing on it in them in the changing light this afternoon

But here is the gear bay

Image

Also tonight Iassembled the pylons and pallets for the missiles

Quick question for you guys....... the cockpit ispainted to my satisfaction....just wondering about weathering it..... was thinking about some grey panel liner on the instrument panels to further define them.... thoughts?pros, cons? Would it even be seen once its all buttoned up and pilot and rio in place??

Sorry totally missed the question about the cockpit
I like to panel line buttons and stuff and then do a dry brush silver and other colors to bring out the knobs buttons and switches and such.
Not trying to get it all dirty and weathered tank-like, just a bit of definition

Edit:just had a look back at the first pages photos of your cockpit....don’t touch it, looks fine!!!!
Nice motorcycle as well :thumb2:

It doesnt feel like it... im at the point of having to paint lots of little bits and doing the stencils for the missiles... well the 1 aim-54 that i have finished took almost an hour to stencil...
This is the part of a build i hate... so much work but you dont see a huge amount of progress....

Update 6.0

Better half was out this afternoon when I got home = uninterupted model time

started to clean up the nose cone

top come out perfect

Image

bottom side needed a second application, just the smallest blob required

Image

Started the Exhaust cans

straight Ultimate white primer poured in and swished around, might need a second application, looking a bit patchy
Image

Exhaust Nozzle, mix of tamiya xf56 and xf7 (5to1)
Image

Heat shield?? staight xf56
Image

And both side by side, when I was mixing the xf56 and xf7,I couldn't see much of a difference on white paper to xf56.
But on plastic and next to each other, night and day

Nice work! This kit is my next project. Waiting for a decent day to start it when my mojo decides to come back. I'm using leftover decals from my Danger Zone build. I'm glad stencils are provided for the ordinance. In general how are the decals in this kit behaving for you? Tamiya decals tend to be a little finicky. The fit looks like Tamiya which I expected.

Update 9.0

First real stuff up in this build.... :wall:

Had cleaned the airbrush out but then decided fi was going to do some more work... just to shoot some aqua gloss at the last of the exhaust parts....
But of course i had forgot to dial the compressor down from approx 50psi to the usual 15 that i use for aqua gloss...... yep managed to completely flood the peices.....
Will try soaking them tonight in some isopropyl alcohol tonight when i get home and giving them a scrub with an old toothbrush. Im hoping being all acrylic paints the the IPA will do the job......

Image

Take 2.....

Cleaned up the overkill aqua gloss with ipa
Image

once they were washed with soapy water and air dryed they were reshot with Ultimate glossy Black primer, tried the tipof warming the primer with water
seems to work quite well

Thats it for tonight..... so far

The vertical stabilizers look great. Can't wait to see the decals that will bring this bird alive :thumb2:
Love to say I have never done the over flooding spray, but I would be a liar

Maybe y'all can help me out with something.

When you say stencils, do you mean like a dry transfer type decal? I'm confused.

Ok, lets see.
They are decals, when I say stencil, im talking the 100's of little decals... the no step, lifting points etc
As opposed to the main decals, squadran insignia, roundels etc

Hope that makes sense?

Thatis all the modelling work Ive done lately
Have been distracted with the grand daughter.... she is sitting next to me now with my partner and she is at the stage where she is just starting to smile :D

Ok..... So I might be a very proud Grandpa and just slightly smitten with her.....
