Danny Sullivan's Molson 1993 Indy 500

Post by Shunter »

Hello all and glad to be apart of this GB. Please accept my apologies as i can across this GB after i had already sort of started pulling things out of the box. So i have done my best to show that may of the parts are still on the sprues and that it is only the body parts i have been working on. I started working on this one on the 21st of January and this was after seeing the great decals Michael at Indycals had produced.

The box art and what was still inside

What i am looking at doing and the sheet that Indycals has made.

Early prep work getting ride of the seam lines and just working on saying good bye to the yellow plastic.

Then i read Michael's post again and see that the car ran with the roadcourse sidepods, luckily for me i have one laying around so i semi start it again.

And this is where i am now, after the post arrived on Monday i got started on doing the decals.

So decals are finished on this one now as well. I am impressed with Michael's new printing method the ink is bullet proof almost, the only think i found is the paper is tough as well but as long as you trim tight to the printed area the carrier film is basically non existent. I recommend this and the new sheets to anyone....Nice work Michael.
So now it is onto the rest of the work for me with the two builds, but real work beckons next week so things may slow some...

A. Didn’t know Tamiya did an Indy Car kit
B. Don’t know anything about your decal source
C. I like to make lists

Great paint and good build choice :thumb2: :pop:

Oh yeah hang on D. Molson’s is really crappy Canadian beer.; all processed and preservatives. Go for the local micro brew stuff :th:

I too didn't know Tamiya did any Indy Car kits other than the Kmart car I see listed on eBay all the time. Following your build with interest.

Thank you all guys....to help with the list makers out there, try this link www.indycals.net this is Michael's site and he is a great guy to deal with. Yes Tamiya released two versions of the 1993 Lola, this was following on from the Mansell mania when he went over to the States and took to oval racing quite well. Tamiya did a version of his car in road course trim and then the one i am doing which is the car Raul Boesel drove and this one is in the speedway configuration for Indy. They are well out of production and were quite cheap till recently their price seems to have gone up. These are snap kits and i think this may have put people off, i do not know but they build up nicely and if you wanted to you could go nuts on one.

Nice topic. I’ve built the mansell version and used the indycal decals. Never had a issue with them, keep up the great work

I just checked out the IndyCals site. I recently ordered on eBay, the AMT Domino's March 88C IndyCar. If the decals have gone bad, I know where to go for replacements.

Skypainter303 if i was you i would not even bother with the kit decals, they will be 30+ years old and will not want to follow the curves of the body etc, i would just order the sheet you need from Indycals.

Not much of an update but i think you can appreciate that it is 39 degrees Celsius here today and my A/C was serviced last week and of course it is not working correctly...funny it was prior to the service.
So anyway i went out in the garage as it was cooler there for awhile. I sprayed the wheels the other day and i thought i would take a shortcut and clear the kit black plastic, i have to say it looked really good and what a finish, then i sprayed the Alclad Chrome over it, i have done this before with 2K and then chrome and that worked well, but not this time around.
Image
Image
So it was time to soak in the alcohol bath and i started again with the usual process, flat black, gloss black and then today the Alclad, i think i got it this time.

Wheels look good 👀

Thanks for the decal source, got lost in there for a while :D
Definitely going to swap out the new ones for some of my old Tamiya ones
I like that they let you choose to have no background and have a template for painting :thumb2:

I am definitely going with IndyCals. I just received my AMT March 88C and while the decals are in decent condition, the 1980s printing is a bit crude.
