Hasegawa P-40E Warhawk 1:48

I thought this would be a nice fun kit to build while waiting for a few other things to finish up.



Since this isn't a "judged" competition I skipped the sprue pictures. The kit is nicely molded and the overall fit is good.

Started with the cockpit. No real surprises. I used Vallejo Model Air colors and Tamiya Dark Brown panel wash. I did a little dry brushing with Citadel Dry Niblet Green. Just to give a little highlight to the interior as a juxtaposition to the brown wash.



Fuselage went together with no real big issues, but some of the seams will have to be addressed (or not, we'll see).



The fit on the wing halves was great. I picked up a couple of bags of these little baby clothespins at Wally World for a few bucks. They work well for keeping the pressure on thin parts.



Unfortunately, all of the great fittings was ruined by a horrible wing root fit! Had to break out the goo!



My goo is the standard sprue chunks and Tamiya E. T. To speed up drying time I also added some Toluene as a kicker. It is a little hot, so I need to be careful not to get it where I don't want it.

Ahh so that is what you are up to with the mini clothes pins.
The cockpit looks great, right down to your green niblets
Always frustrating to find a gap form like that, I am sure you will deal with it fine

I got a little more done on the P-40. The basic camouflage is complete. I tried a new (for me) technique using a moltow masking pen. I just drew out the areas and colored in the rest.



I am not sure I would do this again. Whatever time I saved in the layout will be lost in removing the masking material. On a good note I am excited about how well the Vallejo paint has stood up the all the rubbing. I only removed the base paint layer in a couple of spots and that was due to my nail scratching the paint.





I probably still have about 30 minutes of cleanup left.

A little more progress has been made. I put on most of the decals needed. Some didn't survive due to user error. So this particular plane will now be a Flying Blind Tiger!

It has a coat of Aqua gloss to protect the decals and next up will be weathering. I plan on using a sponge and silver paint to ding up the plane first and then panel lines and a wash.

Nice work Matthew - I like the idea of using the Molotow masking pens for drawing out the camo... I wonder if it'd work to block out the bulk of the area with tape and then just use the pens around the edges.

I think I am done with the weathering. Not ecstatic, but placated. I used Vallejo Model Air Silver and a bit of a bath sponge to apply the chipping to various forward facing areas of the plane. I heavily chipped the prop blades. Apparently, along with being blind, this tiger likes to fly backward. After the chipping, I used a couple of different shades of Tamiya Panel Liner to accent the details on the body. After drying, I used a cotton swab moistened with thinner to remove any excess. Next step is to re-attach all the bits I broke off while weathering and then adding the final little pieces that I knew I would have broken off. After that, I am just looking at a dull cote finish and a short trip to the display cabinet. Just in time for some fools and their Sci-Fi build. I should note that I am one of the fools.

Oops, I forgot that I still need to add some exhaust and gun smoke stains with oil. That will be fun!!!!

I think that is what I would do next. Too much effort to remove all of that masking material. If you do try that, I recommend one of these to assist in removing the material.

Put some oil down. Still haven’t gotten this technique to a good level yet, but I will keep trying.
