Global Scale Modeller

This will be my 1st Bemax kit and is the 86 Monte Carlo rally version. The kit comes in white styrene and Paul did a review of the kit here:-



The kit has a full interior and the finished model can be displayed with the front and rear sections in place or off the main body. Ialso have the dedicated upgrade set for the kit.

The build starts with the engine some carbon decals from the upgrade set and also the Arbarth decals added then the turbo/intercoolers ect were added to the engine completing this mini assembly [sorry forgot to take pictures] The inner body shell is prepped and painted then some more decals from the upgrade kit added.

The engine assembly is added to the body shell then the side panels and running gear was placed in position lastly today the screen that separarates the engine and driving compartment was added.

Some of the parts need a good clean up before paint but nothing too bad. When assembling the rads to the engine block add the rads first then add the turbos and other pipe work otherwise it can become very fragile until the glue sets.

Already looks like a work of art. What color is the tub and also the calipers and heads? I love that metallic look.

The tub was first coated in semi gloss black then given a coat of Alclad aircraft aluminium. The head was given a coat of gloss black and again a coat of aircraft ali just by changing from semi gloss black to full gloss black can change the tone of the metal finish and I have been using this technique for a while now. The pipework is mostly Tamiya burnt iron with alclad highlights on parts as needed.

The calipers were painted with Vallejo's liquid metal range these are alkahol based paints but they again give a different tone of silver just to break up the overall effect that using the same silver paint on everything sometimes just washes everything out. Also the calipers have etch disc inserts these were just left natural and given a coat of gloss clear to seal them after fitting.

I never use Alclad's gloss black undercoat anymore had the dry sticky and not go off syndrome once to often with the darn stuff . So I generally use whats to hand which right now is Tamiya's semi gloss black be it the old one or the new lacquer type . The lacquer drys faster though. Again with the gloss black anything to hand as long as its a good paint it will work.

What I forgot to mention last night is how silver and many other colors can change from each manufacterer each one being a slightly different silver for instance so mixing a couple up in a build can actually enhance the model as it makes it more life like. If you look at engine pics in race cars the aluminium used has different colors/hues according to it being cast or machine finished so throwing in some different silvers is good.

More done on the tub but 1st if your looking for a highly detailed build then this may be for you its crammed full of it.

The rear stiffener and upper cooling radiator was added next along with the steel air intake. Note that the intake is on the roof so deep fording if needed can be done

The tub so far deals with the rear of the car in this stage we start putting the front of the car together along with the suspension and running gear. As you can see from the pics the front chassis glues directly onto the rear with a central cover that goes over the four wheel drive running gear . This centre section is provided as a clear part so you can omit the carbon decal provided in the upgrade set and show off whats underneath. I opted to go with the decal.

More etch and decals were added as the build carries on but the last parts to go on today was the front rad and steering gear parts.

The inner tub assembly continues with the addition of etch plates at the rear and the cabin being fitted out gear stick,brake handle and fire exstingisher. The seats come next having the upgrade set carbon added to the backs and seat belts and other decals added. Next the dash was painted and again decals added along with the two inner doors that also have decals added before being fitted to the tub. All that needs adding now is the roll bar and the inner assembly is done.

The outer body has been started removing seam lines and adding parts and etch.

The roll bar has been fitted completing the inner tub assembly. Next any etch/parts that needed fitting was added to the three body segments and then the insides were given a coat of red paint followed when the paint was dry by a coat of gloss varnish. If your wondering why the red the bodys of these cars were made from GRP [Glass Reinforced Plastic] and thats just the color of the final gel coat added to the body parts in the mold. Tomorow holds lots of masking and the outer paint goes on ready for decals.

Ok some white has gone down today starting with the wheels and odds n sods. The main body parts were masked up inside then the outers were given several thin coats of Zero white and left to dry. Once the masking was removed the insides were touched up with red where and if needed. The rear section had carbon fibre decals added to the wheel wells and the centre section had the black added along the bottom sides. Looks like it could be the start of the decals going on.

Thanks for looking in and your comments both. Its my 1st Beemax kit there is some clean up needed on seam lines and small amounts of flash in places but apart from that fit is not Tamiya but close on the kit I am building.

The clear parts were masked off and the surrounds painted black. The decals have been added to the rally plates and to the car itself. The upper spoiler first had more carbon decals added then the logo. Should be ready for a clear coat tomorrow after a final check over.

The wheel hubs have been clear coated and when dry the tyres went on and were fitted to the car. The main body was split into 3 parts, the front and rear body parts will be removable to view the engine and front suspension set up once finished. The three sections were then given a coat of clear coat and left to dry.

Thanks for looking in and your comments, the wheel hubs should all be white like the spare wheel finish but for extra brake cooling used on some stages they added a cast aluminium plate with vanes that pushed more cooling air like a fan over the brake disc's/calipers . This addition was easily placed on the car or removed just by undoing the basic wheel nuts.

The four main wheel hubs were assembled with the optional fan plates on them and then they were all sprayed white with the same color that the main body was sprayed with. Once dry the car road wheels with the cooling plates were given a sprayed coat of Vellejo Liquid silver this again shows how just by the base coat can change the hue of the same silver used with different base coats. Once dry the hubs were finished off with a clear coat.

Vallejo alcohol paints can be brushed but they give a better overall finish if sprayed with an airbrush there only drawback is the finish can be fragile to handling to prevent this I have found 2k clear coats give a protective coat to keep them pristine. The new Lacquer clears may also be good here too but that's something I am looking into.

Calling this one done, the kit has some clean up needed and some holes need opening out but nothing major. The after market set is a must if you want the mud guards and some other details that are easily seen missing on the finished kit.

I had never even heard of Beemax until I joined this forum.
And with this, and the Lancia Stratos being two of my all-time favorite rally cars, may have to invest in one of these.

Incredible job on this one though, I love that car and yours is perfect!
