NEW Revell Shelby Cobra 289 FIA 1/25 (1/24 in reality)

Post by BOABModels »

I have just started the new 1/25 (1/24 really) Revell Shelby Cobra 289 -
This looks to be a really good kit!

I have also done an unboxing for those who want a look inside!

Through discussing the kit with more experienced builders, we think it's a rebox of an Academy kit from early 90s.

There are also some errors on the box - it's definitely 1/24 and some of the features are more reminiscent of the 427.

I have this kit so watching with interest. In your first build video you mention about the rocker cover decals being hidden. Looking at the instructions I think they are wrong, decals 1 and 2 (or the option to use two no.5) should go on part 6 not part 11. Hope there aren't too many more mistakes in the instruction book, does seem to be a bit of a failing with recent Revell kits.
Good luck with the rest of the build.

Thanks for watching and yeah, you're probably right about the decals. Anyway, I put the number 5 decals on top instead. I do feel a bit like a Guinea pig building this set!

The next one should be up later today!

Starting to come alive now with the addition of the decals, looks good, well done. If you can alert other builders of this kit to things they need to look for then it makes it even more worthwhile so more test pilot than guinea pig!

Sure I will try. There weren't too many issues with the bodywork but I did find the engine bay a little fiddly. I will try to give some pointers on the next one!

Thanks a lot! It's a classic.

This set has only just been released so it probably isn't too hard to get a hold of. I got it from E models.

Thanks a lot! I'm a real sucker for the classic racing liveries.

I think this car is supposed to be Ken Miles', as played by Christian Bale in the recent film Le Mans 66.

Interior is now detailed!

I used Revell acrylic paints along with black felt for the carpets, aluminium foil tape for chrome, ribbon seat belts as well as some photo etch.

Check out my video here -

Many thanks!

Thanks! The moulds are pretty good on this.

I'm happy I could make the interior look good as it will be so exposed in this car.

Well I don't envy you on the scratch building front. I feel mine may be finished this evening, certainly this week anyway.

I need to drill some holes for the roll bar and in the exhausts though.

So I was looking at examples of the car and the sidepipe colour varies - what would you chose?

Well, the box shows it in flat black, and the actual #98 car on the right shows the as race worn white, and the #146 just looks too pretty and not raced for me. One thing about the white and black is that is will allow more aging and dry brushing (more depth). If you are doing the actual Ken Miles # 98 car (289 Cobra), all the research I can find on original photos shows the exhaust to be white but this is ultimately your call and your model....

Ben
On the table or recently completed:

1/18 AV8-B Harrier - WIP
1/35 Churchill AVRE with SBG Bridge Diorama - DONE
75mm BMW R75 WW2 motorcycle with rider - DONE

Thanks, Ben. You've put a lot of thought into that response!

I agree that the white is more age appropriate and it does look like Miles' car. I know there are some errors with this kit from a historical point of view so I want what it is to look as accurate as possible.

I probably will go with white! :th:

White seems to be the consensus from people online. It would be more accurate for a track Cobra too.

It's finished! I chose to not go with the chrome bumpers as well as doing the sidepipes white to best match the race livery.

A challenging kit but I'm very happy with how it has turned out. It's got a great level of detail and the Cartograf decals as excellent as always.

My final video is here too!

Cheers!

Very nice work! My favorite car in my favorite color. Although, if I had one I would get it wrapped in black every once in a while or buy a second one. What's a million plus dollars?

Haha! I can't even afford one on Gran Turismo! 😂 Beautiful car though.

I agree. I've looked at so many photos to try to get the look right. Unfortunately it's definitely a 427 body rather than the 289 that it says on the box, but I'm happy with how it looks.

Thanks for the kind words, chaps! It was a challenge but I think it paid off in the end!
