So with that intricate detail, do I base paint it and then dry brush the raised details????

On my side I would paint it like varnish wood... you know like wooden propellers of WW I planes. But if the details of the base are anything like the ship itself it should be nice !!

The real question is will you follow the instructions or view them merely as "Guidelines"?
I crack myself up

One more coat and I will get the Pearl white more even...it is latex and not oil unfortunately

Interesting! What brand of paint is latex? I know house paint is obviously, but you're the first one I've ever seen use latex paint on a model.

First set of eight cannons put together
Ultimate black primer, bunt umber and black oil layers for wood bits. Cannons are dark iron Mr Metal Color
This is nice as it give a deep chocolate brown woodwork look and changes the black scheme a bit

I was going to say you had peaked too early with the stand but I was wrong.
Those cannons look superb. Great wood and iron effects. They look scaleless and that's a real art my friend

The stand looks amazing with the paint ! that is a damn good start. And the cannon... oh my god the quantities of pieces in the kit... that's going to be a big and long project I think !
I stumble on this this morning....
Thought you might like it even if it's a wooden ship. I love wooden ships kits. I have 2 that I started a few years ago and put aside...
Take care and stay safe. Can't wait to see the progression on this project.

8 sets of cannons done over three evenings after dinner and chores gets all 32 cannons assembled
Still have detail and touch up painting to do on these two dozen

So a bit done on the Pearl
Got the hull glued together and the decks cut out and test fitted
I decided to make a soft jig for the base so I didn’t ruin the paintwork on the kit one. Just some foam cardboard and glue.
All 32 cannons are finished and painted. Have to put them away so they don’t get ruined

So some slight mods to the support. Now I have added a bit of plywood that lets me hold the base easier and is more solid
Black Stylenrez primer added to decking

Pearl is coming on nicely - I'm looking forward to seeing the finished (and rigged) item.
FWIW - our dogs never truly leave us - a part remains always. Ascribe to it what you will - it just is that way.

Hull comes together quick and really seems like the finish is close. Of course I know that isn't right and there is a myriad of things still to do. Interested to see what you do with the rigging.

Testing out my decking paint
The overall base is Stylenrez flat black.
The little section on the right has the following
1. Burnt umber oil, wiped
2. Black oil, light wiped
3. AK Burnt Jet Engine pigments rubbed into oils while still wet with a Q tip
It drops off the oil sheen and gives an uneven rough mat black look I am after with just a hint of brown wood underneath
My worry is the pigments will rub away too much to the touch
Letting it dry up and see. Then plan a light grey dry brush to hit the highlights of the planks

Neat build Scott... I saw your comment on my Yamato build so I had to come over and take a look. I have the old Revell Constitution and United states along with the Heller Victory for rigged ships but I'm not sure when I will ever start any of them (it's a rigging thing)....
Like those cannons....

ship like those are so impressive. They are such great kits on the market too... I have two in my stash that I started years ago... and was not properly equip at the time. I would love to get back to them once...
The most expensive one have such details. I met I guy once that lives near me who build them for museum and sells them. He does scratch for only plans, sometimes the original plans, and kits. I should try to find back is internet site. It's
ANd you should see the prices it sells !!! But considering the prices of the kits and the time spent building them

Oh yeah amazing hobby scratch building like that.
There are a few wooden ship building sites online...good rabbit hole to fall into
I have wooden kits for the Blue Nose I and II which are very Canadian ships found on our dime. One day I will get to those

A big rabbit hole !! And the tools aren't the same ! The space needed to build them too...The bluenose is one of the two I have. The other one, a better kit, is a Swift if I remember right. This is the one I done the most work, which isn't that much. And really not a good job on it. Getting back to it I think I would have to start over and scratch build the wood pieces that I've used.

Scratch building is way beyond my patience level for sure.
Your deck looks great Scott. I would think the oils would bond the pigments down but I guess time will tell.
