AFV Club 1/35 FV107 Scimitar - Bosnia 1994

Post by ElCapitan »

Excited to be joining this Group Build, as it's one of the ones I voted for.

As always, I like to search eBay for something a bit different, which fits in nicely with the concept of the GB. In this case I've found a really nice looking kit for a FV107 Scimitar. I was torn between finishing this as a Falkands unit or a UN peacekeeping unit from the Yugoslav wars. I have decided to go with the latter, despite how much I dislike using white paint

Image

Not too much in the box - it's a relatively small tank after all. It does include a PE fret and a metal barrel which is quite a nice addition. Further down the line I may look for metal tracks for it, but will see how I feel.

Hope to get started on this later today.

For metal tracks I think your best bet is Master Club:

MASTERCLUB MTL35218
Metal Tracks for 1/35 CVR(T)family /Scorpion/Scimitar/Sultan
200 track links, 190 rubber pads, 400+ tracks pins

The pads are important as the CVR(T) family all run on Composite Material track pads, not bare metal tracks.

Thanks for the advice. I assume the rubber doesn't need painted, is that right?

I think so - not physically seen their CVR(T) tracks fresh from the pack only on completed models. The real pads I've seen too many of - the material is black but the contact surfaces on them would look a dark grey, scuffed and nicked on the edges.

Awesome - looking forward to seeing this go together as I have the AFV Club Scorpion buried in the stash & also have the masterclub tracks on the wishlist.

I suppose it's time I posted some progress photos...

It's going together really easily so far. As is often the case, everything started with attaching the suspension arms to the lower hull.

      Image

No drama there - they all line up nicely. The instructions ask me to put all the wheels together next, but I need to be in the mood for that, so I'll do those later. Instead I worked on the upper hull, which included a nice PE exhaust guard. To bend this into shape I laid it flat on top of some Ultimate buffers and rolled a thin rod over it repeatedly until it curled up to the correct radius.

      Image

Next up I'll start working on the turret. I'll have to do the wheels eventually, I know!

Progress has been made on the turret now. It looks like it's going to have a lot of parts but hopefully nothing problematic.

      Image

It's a nice little kit. The only thing that's slightly disappointed me so far is the use of chamfered edges as joins when putting together storage boxes. There's so much risk of misalignment, and the fit is never as good as with a simple locator pin or grooved method.

The turret is all finished now - it's fairly cluttered to say the least.

      Image

      Image

      The metal barrel looks nice.

      And what's this?...

      Image

Got the wheels out the way too

And even got it all primed today

      Image

I've primed in black instead of white, as I feared that a white primer coat would make the main colour coat look TOO white, if you know what I mean.

Good move - remember In reality these were painted white over the top of the standard NATO green/black. So you should get a pretty good match to the colouring!! :)

It has come together pretty quickly (certainly when compared to my last few completions!!)

I've painted it white, using Mig Ammo acrylic through an airbrush for the first time - seemed to go down okay, although I still prefer to spray Tamiya acrylics.

        Image

Then before I remembered to post an update I went ahead and did some detail painting and decals, so it now looks like this:

        Image

I've left the sprockets off to make it easier to add the tracks - I'm just going to use the vinyl ones as they look okay. I'll start weathering later, though I don't have a plan of attack for that yet - I don't want to use anything too dark. I have a few grey products I will probably use in some way.
